Isabel POV
Pain shot through my side like a burning dagger, spreading in hot waves with every breath I struggled to take. Miguel's arms tightened around me.
"Stay awake, Isabel," Miguel said, his voice raw and unsteady.
I blinked, trying to focus on his face.
The sound of tires screeching pulled my attention to the edge of the scene. Alex staggered, his weapon still raised, but the car—a dark SUV—sped toward him.
"Get her in the car!" a voice shouted.
Miguel moved quickly, lifting me into his arms. Pain lanced through me again, and I bit down on a cry. The world lop-sided as he carried me toward the waiting vehicle. The passenger door flew open, and I felt the cold leather against my back as I was gently laid down.
"Miguel—" I croaked, the words barely escaping my lips.
He leaned close, his hand brushing hair away from my face. "I'm here. Just hold on."
