Ava Morales watched as the Inner Circle melted into the crowd, disappearing. She made a mental note to revisit her investigation, to dig deeper into the lives of these five individuals who seemed to hold the keys to the Church of Eternal Bliss.
As she walked back to her car, parked near the church, Ava's mind whirled with questions. What bound these people to Pastor Certain? What secrets did they keep, and what drove their unwavering devotion? She knew she had to get closer, to gain their trust, if she was to uncover the truth.
The next morning, Ava received a surprise call from Rachel Patel. "Good morning, Miss Morales," Rachel said, her voice sweet as honey. "I hope you're not too disappointed about yesterday. I'd like to offer you an exclusive interview with Pastor Certain. He's willing to answer any questions you might have."
Ava's instincts screamed warning signals, but she couldn't resist the opportunity. "That's very generous of him," she said, trying to sound neutral. "When and where would be convenient?"
"How about today, at 2 pm, at the church?" Rachel suggested. "Pastor Certain will make sure to allocate sufficient time for your questions."
Ava arrived at the church shortly before 2 pm, her notebook and pen at the ready. Rachel escorted her to a stylishly appointed office, where Pastor Certain waited, his smile warm and welcoming.
As they sat down, Ava sensed a subtle tension in the air, a sense of expectation. "Thank you for seeing me, Pastor," she began. "I'm sure you're aware of the rumours surrounding your church. I'd like to give you the opportunity to set the record straight."
Pastor Certain leaned back in his chair, steepling his fingers together. "Rumours, Miss Morales, are like autumn leaves β they blow in on the winds of discontent. We focus on the positives, on spreading the message of hope and redemption. Our congregation is living proof of the power of faith."
Ava scribbled furious notes, her mind racing with follow-up questions. But before she could ask the next one, Pastor Certain's gaze shifted, his eyes flicking to a point beyond her shoulder.
In that instant, Ava sensed a change in the atmosphere, a subtle signal that the interview was about to take a dramatic turn.
