Chapter 17 - Cringed

Days had slipped by in the Underworld, each one more chaotic than the last. After the initial shock of the dungeon and the strange creatures that inhabited it, I found myself slowly adapting to the rhythm of life here. The tasks, the patrons, the dynamics of power—it was all a game, one I was beginning to understand.

Now, as the time to return to the real world approached, I couldn't shake the feeling of anticipation mixed with apprehension. The memory of the previous days loomed over me like a dark cloud, a constant reminder of the challenges I faced.

**Ding!**

[Time to return to your world.]

*All players must prepare to exit the dungeon within the next 10 minutes.*

I looked around at my fellow players, some of whom were still grappling with the reality of our situation.

The bustling energy of the Underworld Food Resto was beginning to fade as the countdown started.

Creatures I had served were now shuffling back to their respective realms, leaving behind the remnants of chaos and camaraderie we had built.

"Hey, Lu!" Eliana called out as she approached. "Are you ready for this?"

I chuckled lightly, trying to mask my uncertainty. "As ready as I can be. It feels like we've just scratched the surface of what this place has to offer."

She nodded, glancing around nervously. "I never thought I'd be saying this, but I actually enjoyed my time here. It's strange, isn't it? Even with the threats and the danger, there was something exhilarating about it."

"Exhilarating is one way to put it," I replied, crossing my arms. "But I can't shake the feeling that we're just pawns in a much larger game. I mean, the top patrons and their unpaid debts... it's all very complex."

Suddenly, the manager of the food resto appeared before us, his demeanor serious. "Listen up, players! As you transition back to your world, remember what you've learned here. The Underworld is a place of lessons—both harsh and valuable. Keep your wits about you. You will be summoned back, and when you return, be prepared to face new challenges."

I met his gaze, curious. "How long do we have before we're called back?"

"Three days in your world," he explained. "After that, the dungeon will force you to return. Use that time wisely. Build your alliances, gather resources, and prepare."

With that, the atmosphere shifted as the countdown continued. I felt a strange sense of loss, as if I was leaving behind more than just the dungeon. This place had changed me, and I knew I would return, whether I wanted to or not.

"Are you all set?" Eliana asked, breaking my thoughts.

"Yeah," I replied, adjusting my stance. "I have some plans for when we get back. I'll need to gather more information about the Underworld and my own abilities. There's so much I still don't know."

As the countdown reached its final seconds, I could feel the familiar sensation of being pulled apart at the seams.

The energy around us crackled, and I held on to my resolve. Whatever awaited me back in the real world, I was determined to face it head-on.

**Ding!**

[You have returned to your world.]

*Welcome back, players.*

As I materialized back into my world, I expected the familiar sights and sounds to greet me. Instead, I was met with an odd sense of déjà vu.

The atmosphere felt unchanged, yet there was an undeniable tension in the air. I glanced around, noticing creatures lurking in the shadows, blending in with the mundane.

It was as if the Underworld had seeped into reality, reshaping my surroundings in subtle ways."Is this a side effect of the Exorcist System?" I mused aloud, scanning the street for any sign of normalcy.

The shadows flickered and shifted, and I felt a rush of adrenaline course through me. I had just spent days serving ghouls and other monstrous patrons, and now, those experiences were crashing into my reality. I couldn't shake the feeling that this world had changed—if only slightly—because of my actions in the Underworld.

As I made my way home, the familiar buildings loomed above me, but they felt different. It was as if they were watching me, waiting to see how I would respond to this new reality. I shook off the apprehension and pushed the door open to my house.

Almost immediately, I was met with an enthusiastic cheer. "Lu! You're back!" Ethan rushed into the room, his face lighting up with a huge grin.

"I was worried! It's been so quiet around here without you."

I couldn't help but smile at his excitement. "Yeah, I missed this place too. It's good to be home."

He stepped back, studying me closely. "You look different, though. Did you do something crazy while you were gone?"

I chuckled, knowing that I could never fully explain the chaos of the Underworld to him. "You could say that. It was... an experience."

Ethan's eyes widened. "An experience? Is that all you're going to say? Come on, give me the details!"

"Maybe later," I replied, trying to sound nonchalant. "Right now, I'm just glad to be back."

He clasped my shoulder. "Well, let's celebrate! How about I whip up something in the kitchen? Your favorite?"

"Sounds perfect." I felt a warmth spread through me at the thought of normalcy.

Even though my mind was still swirling with thoughts of the Underworld, the familiar comforts of home were exactly what I needed right now.

As he headed toward the kitchen, I stood for a moment, letting the normalcy wash over me, a thought crossed my mind that jolted me back to reality: the kids.

I quickly scanned the room, realizing it was quieter than usual. "Hey, Ethan, where are the kids?" I asked, my heart racing slightly at the thought of them being alone.

Ethan paused in the kitchen, glancing over his shoulder. "Oh, they're in the backyard! They were playing earlier, but I think they're probably just napping now. They had a big day."

A sense of relief washed over me. I walked toward the back door and opened it, stepping outside into the familiar yard. The sun was beginning to set, casting a golden glow over everything.

There, sprawled out on the grass, were my mystical children, each one blissfully asleep, their little chests rising and falling gently.

I couldn't help but smile at the sight. They looked so peaceful, their innocence a stark contrast to the chaos I had just experienced in the Underworld.

As I moved closer, I could hear their soft breathing and see the way the sun caught the shimmering strands of their hair.

"Look at them," I murmured, feeling a wave of affection for my little ones. "They're perfect."

Ethan stepped out beside me, grinning. "They really are. You've got your hands full with them, huh?"

"Yeah, but I wouldn't trade them for anything," I replied, my heart swelling with pride. "It's like they bring a bit of light into all the darkness I've been dealing with."

He nodded, and for a moment, we stood in silence, watching the kids. But then I couldn't help but ask, "Have they been behaving?"

Ethan laughed softly. "More or less. Just a few small messes here and there, but nothing I couldn't handle. They really seem to look up to you."

"Good," I said, still watching them. "I want them to feel safe, especially with everything going on."

Ethan turned to me, a hint of concern in his eyes. "You know you can tell me if something's wrong, right? If there's something you're dealing with—"

I shook my head, cutting him off. "Nah! stop acting cringed"
