Chapter 12 - BETRAYAL IN THE SHADOWS

Violet dropped her phone, her hand shaking visibly.

"What do I do? What do I do now? she groaned, holding her head.

"I have no choice. I just have to do it." she clenched her jaw.

"I'm sorry Adrian."

Violet made sure Adrian was out, before entering his office.

She took a deep breath and closed the door silently, behind her.

All the necessary information regarding the movie premiere was just sent to Adrian few hours, ago for final approval.

She has to find it and send it to the blackmailer.

"It's now or never" she muttered as she walked to the table

After checking for about three minutes, she couldn't find anything

"Where could it be?" she asked herself as she scanned the table.

Her eyes suddenly caught sight of a small drawer close to his chair.

It was more of a stool, but it has some in-built drawers.

She opened it and smiled, when she found the flash drive.

"Got it." she muttered.

"I have no choice. I have to save Alexa too. I can't let her be in trouble because of me" she sighed and she made to leave, when she heard footsteps coming towards the door.

She gasped and tried to find where to hide.

She looked at a closed door, and without thinking twice, she opened it.

Thankfully, it wasn't locked.

"Wow" she muttered as she looked around.

It was Adrian's private suite.

It's connected to his office, and he only goes there if he needs to clear his head or he just wants to be left alone.

She heard the door to the office open, and she gasped.

She quickly ran into the closet and closed the door gently.

Using the clothes hung in the closet as cover, she hid herself.

Adrian's scent was all over the clothes and she smiled, sniffing them.

"What am I doing?" she scolded herself.

She was sure that the person that entered the office was Adrian.

"Please don't open this door. Please" she begged, clasping her palms together.

Adrian sighed as he entered his office , he has been working since morning and it's really tiring.

He paused when his nose caught the scent of roses in the air.

"That's weird" he muttered.

He actually has a good sense of smell and he couldn't just help but notice that the scent of his office was different, like someone entered.

"Maybe it was the person that delivered the flashdrive" he shrugged.

He stood up and opened the door to his private suite, he just wanted to relax after the hectic day's work.

Violet stiffened when she heard the sound of the door open.

She hugged her legs tightly, praying inwardly that he doesn't come to the closet.

Adrian frowned when he entered.

That same rose scent was in the suite too.

He knew he didn't lock the door before leaving, as no one has dared enter his suite.

He knew someone must have entered.

For the scent to still lingered in his room, it means the person was still present.

Who would have the guts to come into his place.

He knew that person was a female for sure, as it was a feminine scent.

"Come out! Wherever you are, come out now.

You won't like yourself if I fish you out myself!" he said, loudly in a voice so calm, yet deep and authoritative.

Violet trembled as she listened to him.

"I'm dead. I'm f*cking dead." she mumbled.

What would she say she was looking for in his suite?

Snooping in her boss private suite?

The cold Adrian for that matter.

She could recall how coldly he looked at her, when he sent her out of his room.

And now, she is in his closet.

"Ohh lord" she cried silently.

"I can see you are testing my patience!" his deep voice came out loudly again as he out his hands in his pockets and started walking in long strides across the room.

He stopped right in front of the closet and Violet almost peed on herself.

"This is it Violet. I'd better say my last prayers." she muttered.

And just when Adrian wanted to open the door, his phone rang and he picked it up.

He creased his brows as he listened to the caller.

"I'm on my way" he said and turned back.

His hand was already on the door knob when he turned back, to look at the closet.

He wanted to go back but something urgent just came up.

"Shit!" he cursed and left immediately.

Violet released a breath, she didn't know she had been holding.

"Geez " she gasped, as she put her hands on her chest.

Her heart was beating rapidly.

She hurriedly ran out of the suite, making sure no one was in sight.

She got to her office and texted the blackmailer, who had told her to call him, Volt.

"Done" she texted and he replied immediately.

"Good. Come to the address I will send you now.

Bring it along" he texted back.

"I have a question." she texted.

"Make it quick " he replied.

"What if I get caught? I saw a CCTV camera in his office" she replied.

"Leave that to me. Come to the place once it's 7pm.

No more questions" he replied back and went immediately.

"This is your life now, Violet" she muttered to herself as she put her head on her table.

5PM

STARLIGHT

Adrian just returned to the office, after settling some urgent issues.

Most workers have left for home, as it's past closing hours.

He didn't go home directly, because he had some uncompleted works to finish up.

He stopped when he remembered what happened earlier, before leaving his office.

He marched to his suite, remembering the intruder earlier but as he guessed, no one was there.

He went back to his seat and checked his drawer to review the movie premiere but he couldn't find the flashdrive.

He had instructed the director to put it in his drawer and he had confirmed it when he arrived in the morning.

He was very sure that it was in the drawer this morning.

He frowned, when he thought about the person that had entered his suite earlier.

"Ohh I see, a snitch is in the building." he said, a dark expression forming on his face.

He went to the ICT room to check the CCTV footage.

The footage only showed the early hours of the morning and then, it went blank.

"What's going on?" he mumbled.

That flash drive is very important and getting into the wrong hands, might cause the company a great loss.

"Someone has cleared the footage on purpose" he muttered, his mind instinctively went to the time he wanted to check the girl that he slept with that night, the footage wasn't available too.

Most workers had left already, so there was no how he could search them till the next morning.

"I should had just checked the closet that morning. F*ck that call. F*ck!" he cursed.

"They don't know who they are messing with" he smirked before leaving the room.

7PM,

Violet got to the address that was sent to her and she informed him.

"Come to the rooftop" he replied and she did as he said.

Her heart was racing with anticipation and fear as she stepped into the unknown, her mind consumed by thoughts of Alexa's safety.

She was scared, her palms sweating, and her legs trembling.

She tried to comfort herself, but her mind was filled with worst-case scenarios.

What if she gets caught? What if Adrian finds out?

As she reached the rooftop, the chilly wind slapped her face, sending shivers down her spine.

She looked around, but there was no one in sight.

"Am I in the wrong place?" she muttered, uncertainty creeping in.

Just when she wanted to give up and go back, she heard footsteps behind her.

Her heart skipped a beat as she turned around.

A man dressed in a black cloak, walked towards her, his face covered with a mask.

Violet held her breath, her eyes fixed on the ominous figure.

Her eyes widened in terror as she saw the tattoo of a scorpion on his chest. She almost gasped, but her voice was caught in her throat.

She took few steps back, her eyes fixed on the edge of the rooftop.

The ground below seemed to be pulling her down, and she felt dizzy.

The man stretched forth his hand, and Violet's heart sank. She felt trapped, with no escape.

With shaking hands, she gave him the flash drive.

He collected it and left without saying a word. Violet was left standing alone, feeling vulnerable and exposed.

"What have I gotten myself into?" she muttered, her voice barely audible. Tears pricked at the corners of her eyes as fear and desperation overwhelmed her.
