Chereads / Lord Of The Dead / Chapter 6 - Exercising Due Caution

Chapter 6 - Exercising Due Caution

"Hmm…"

Lucius stared at the unsheathed sword that was nearly drawn by the fallen Knight.

Just as he suspected, there was something strange about the weapon. He could feel burning sensations on the hand that held the blade's scabbard. It wasn't enough to cause pain, but the heat still bothered him.

'If he had drawn the weapon and attacked… would it have been enough to damage me?' He wondered.

Ever since he awoke as Lord Mors, he was yet to feel pain. There was still the phantom pain that appeared anytime he remembered his past life and the death he suffered then, but that was more akin to fear or psychological distress than actual pain.

'If a Knight like this possesses a weapon that can harm me, it means there are other ways and other people capable of doing the same.'

He instantly knew to be cautious.

'Let's put this away for now. I'll ask Lili about it later.' His mind went to the Cult Leader, remembering her words regarding the Knight. 'He didn't seem particularly strong to me, though. Does that mean she's also not very strong?'

Lucius shook off the thought, hiding the Blessed Weapon within his long cloak.

He felt the slightly hot sensation press against his naked skin as he did so, but since it didn't hurt, he ignored the feeling. Instead, he walked out of the old building and set his sights to the nearby hill that stood at slightly higher ground than the Cult premises.

'Hmm… I see.' Lucius narrowed his gaze, instantly feeling his vision zoom in on the soldiers who stood there. 'They're a little spread out, and it seems they are closely observing the building and its vicinity.'

With just that, he was able to tell that they were the soldiers that the Knight was boasting of.

Even though Lucius wasn't really interested in most of the guy's babbling, he was still able to extract the important information and process them when the moment called for it.

'They're also in medieval armor, and just by looking around… I can tell what kind of setting this is.' He even looked at the Cult Headquarters—now a partly decimated building—and observed its design.

Even though he wanted to have a little more information before coming to a proper conclusion, Lucius could no longer deny it.

'It seems I got transmigrated to the European Middle Ages.'

He didn't have much information about this time period, but he knew that there were tons of wars, chaos, and most of all… DEATH.

'The Bubonic Plague happened around this time, right? Even the Inquisitions and Crusades… they all happened in this era.' He rubbed his chin, his mind going through the few things he remembered about the current age.

Of course, he also considered the possibility that this was simply another world that resembled the European Middle Ages, and if that was the case there was a chance that the Plague and other historical atrocities wouldn't happen.

In order to be able to tell the difference, he would need more information.

'And I know just where to get it.' His lips curled into a smile as he looked at the fifty soldiers that diligently carried out their duties.

It was rather unfortunate—for them, not him—but he would have to exterminate them as well.

'They're enemies who know the location of our base.' He told himself. 'It isn't even up for debate…'

They had to die.

Almost driven by instinct, Lucius pressed his legs on the ground and kept his sights on the hill that stood at a short distance. He had never tried something like this in his whole life, but his body was overflowing with so much energy that he felt it was possible.

'Only one way to find out…'

The ground beneath his feet cracked under the pressure that was being exerted, and it seemed like everything around him trembled.

Then—

~BOOOOM!~

He took off, leaving debris of aged earth in his wake.

It felt like the world had become a blur as he ascended high into the sky, closing in on his enemies faster than he could have expected.

'T-this… it feels amazing!' If he had a human heart, it would have been racing at this point.

Back in his old body, there was no way he could do something like this. The slightest physical exertion would cause the pains in his body to increase, which made his parents exclude him from most activities.

Such limitations did not apply to Lord Mors, though.

'Hahaha! Hahahahaaaa!'

As he neared the hill, he couldn't help but feel gratitude towards the Cult Members who summoned him. They had definitely committed an atrocity to summon him, but it was only thanks to them that he could experience such bliss.

… Such freedom.

'All of you… thanks.' At this point, Lili's image appeared in his head, causing him to smile wryly.

'I should end things quickly and get back.'

There was a chance that she could need his assistance in exterminating the remaining soldiers.

**********

"Hehehe… I still can't believe it."

As Lili climbed the stairs that led to the back entrance of the Cult Headquarters, she couldn't help but leak out creepy chuckles.

Her crimson eyes glowed in the darkness as she approached the enemies that stood right at the entrance. Despite the few more steps and the sturdy door that separated her from them, she could still see them clearly.

The ten men seemed to be arguing about something—most likely who would get the recognition for discovering the door.

Lili did not bother overhearing their conversation, as her mind was solely occupied with thoughts of Lord Mors.

'The ritual was successful… and I finally summoned him!'

The darkness hid her face, making sure the ugly grin that she had on was hidden from anyone to see—not that there was a single person around her anyway.

The ten men who had joined her for the ritual were busy preparing a few things, and the other members of the cult were dead, which meant she was the only Cult Member who would face the soldiers.

That didn't bother Lili in the slightest, though.

In fact, she preferred it this way.

~CREAK…~

She slowly opened the door, causing the ten men to jump back in apprehension. They were too busy arguing that they hadn't even heard her footsteps as she approached.

It wasn't that she even put in effort to be inconspicuous.

They were just that incompetent.

"Y-you! You just came out of that door, didn't you?" One of the soldiers—an imbecile of a man—asked her a rather stupid question while pointing his blade at her.

She ignored him and stepped forward, closing the door behind her.

"How many more of you are there? Think you can protect them? Buy them time to escape while you distract us?"

She ignored the remark and looked around to confirm if there were just ten of them or if more were hidden around.

'It's just them, I see…' Once Lili was done confirming what she wanted to know, she turned off her [Third Eye], which caused her glowing crimson eyes to return to their normal ruby color.

All of the soldiers around her had already unsheathed their weapons at this point.

They took their stances and pointed their blades at her.

"It doesn't matter what you do, Heretic. We have men stationed in the high ground, so none of your accomplices can escape."

"Hehe! Indeed… you'll all be butchered like the swine that you are."

"Since there's no escape anyway, we might as well enjoy ourselves a bit." One of the more daring soldiers stepped forward, his grin broader than the rest.

"Even if you are nothing but swine… you still have a rather sinful body."

"Hehe! Indeed." Another remarked. "No one would blame us for indulging just a little."

"After we're done with you, we'll send you straight to hell with the rest of your accomplices…"

As the men said this, they approached her—all ten of them.

Lili remained motionless as she watched them as they did so, her gaze restful and her expression calm.

"Hehe! That's right, girl… don't fight it."

The most daring man among them touched her first, and what happened next caused all of them to instantly halt in their tracks.

~SPLOOSH!~

Pink flesh and bloody entrails erupted, scattering in multiple directions.

Only a small pile of gooey red blood and lumps of flesh remained where that soldier had stood, and all the spectators could instantly tell who the disgusting chunks of meat belonged to.

"U-uuuarghh!"

"Witch! She's a Witch!"

"What abominable Spell did she just use? Kill her! Kill her now!"

"D-dieee heatha—!"

Before any of the clearly disturbed and frightened soldiers could make a single slash at the dangerous Heretic before them, they found their bodies halting.

Their bulging eyes asked why they weren't moving, but the answer didn't come to them.

"Kill me…? How laughable." Lili asked with a dangerous smile, once again turning her face warped and ugly. "None of you have what it takes to end my life."

The soldiers fell to the ground, one after the other—each dying in the most agonizing way they could have imagined for themselves, though their paralyzed bodies prevented them from even letting out a scream.

Standing above them, her naked body drenched in blood and little pieces of gore, was Lili—the Cult Leader herself.

"The only one who can kill me is Lord Mors."
