Chapter 33 - Only cute memories are aloud

The sun peeked through the curtains, spilling warm light across the kitchen. I stood by the stove, flipping pancakes and feeling a mix of excitement and nerves. Today was a big day, and I wanted to make sure Jake and Lily felt as good as possible. Breakfast was a perfect time to start that.

"Pancakes are almost ready!" I called out, trying to keep my voice cheerful.

"Yay!" Lily's voice came from the hallway, her footsteps quickening as she raced toward the kitchen. Jake followed a moment later, rubbing his sleepy eyes.

As they settled at the table, I noticed Jake's face still had a hint of worry. "How are you both feeling?" I asked, pouring syrup onto a stack of warm pancakes.

"I'm okay," Lily said, her eyes bright with excitement for breakfast. "But… are we really going to court today?"

"Yes, we are," I replied, setting a plate in front of her. "But remember, we're just going to talk about how much we love each other and how we can stay together."

Jake picked at his pancake, his brow furrowed. "What if… what if they say we can't live with you?" His voice was soft, almost a whisper.

I took a deep breath, knowing how important it was to reassure them. "Jake, I promise I'm doing everything I can to make sure we stay together. You and Lily are my top priority. I love you both more than anything."

Lily looked up at me, her eyes wide. "You really love us, Dad?"

"Of course I do! You two are my whole world," I said, feeling my heart swell. "We're a team, and we can get through this together."

As they dug into their pancakes, I decided to lighten the mood. "You know, I once tried to make pancakes without any eggs. It was a disaster! The batter turned into gooey mush!"

Lily giggled, and Jake's frown began to fade. "What happened?" Jake asked, his curiosity piqued.

"Well," I continued, "I ended up with a huge mess on the floor. Pancake goo everywhere! It looked like a pancake monster exploded!"

"Ewww!" Lily laughed, her laughter ringing through the kitchen like music.

"Yeah, it was pretty silly. So I learned that pancakes need eggs!" I added with a grin. "Just like we need each other."

With a little more chatter, I could see their faces light up, and the morning felt a bit brighter. As they finished their breakfast, I reminded them, "Let's make sure we pick out nice clothes for today. It's an important day."

"Okay!" they chimed, their excitement returning. I loved seeing them smile.

After breakfast, we headed to the living room to get ready. I rummaged through the closet, pulling out their clothes. "Jake, how about this blue shirt? It looks sharp!"

"Cool!" he said, pulling it on with a smile.

"Lily, what do you think of this pretty yellow dress?" I held it up for her to see.

"I love it!" she exclaimed, spinning around with delight.

As they got dressed, I encouraged them. "You both are going to look amazing today. Remember, it's not just about how we look; it's about being strong and sticking together."

Once they were dressed, I gave them a moment to admire themselves in the mirror. "Wow! You two look like a superstar team!" I said, feeling proud.

"Thanks, Dad!" Jake said, beaming.

"Can we take a picture before we leave?" Lily asked, her eyes sparkling with enthusiasm.

"Absolutely!" I replied, pulling out my phone. I positioned them in front of the window, where the sunlight poured in. "Say cheese!"

"Cheese!" they shouted in unison, their smiles wide and bright.

Looking at the picture made my heart swell. I saved it, knowing I would cherish this moment forever. "Okay, team, let's grab our things. We need to head out soon."

As we gathered our bags, I made sure we had everything—snacks, toys, and a little notebook where they could draw or write. I wanted them to feel comfortable during the wait at the courthouse.

"Dad, what if Claire is mean again?" Jake asked, his voice trembling a bit.

I knelt down to his level, looking him in the eye. "If she is, remember that you have me, and I'm here to protect you. You can always come to me if you feel scared."

Lily chimed in, "And we have each other, right, Jake?"

"Right!" Jake replied, a smile creeping back onto his face.

"Let's stick together, no matter what," I said, feeling more hopeful.

Once we were ready, we walked out the door. The morning air was fresh, and I took a moment to breathe it in. "Alright, my brave explorers, let's head to the courthouse!" I declared, trying to keep things upbeat.

As we walked to the car, I noticed the trees swaying gently in the breeze. The world felt peaceful, but I knew what lay ahead would be challenging. I needed to stay strong for my kids.

After buckling them into their seats, I turned on their favorite music. The cheerful tunes filled the car, making us all smile. "This is our jam!" Lily said, bouncing in her seat.

"Yeah, let's sing!" Jake added, and soon we were all singing along, the worries of the day momentarily forgotten.

As we drove, I kept my focus on the road, but I couldn't help stealing glances at the twins in the backseat. They were laughing and singing, their spirits high. I silently promised to fight for their happiness, no matter what challenges we faced.

When we arrived at the courthouse, my stomach twisted with nerves. The tall building looked imposing, and I felt a wave of anxiety wash over me. "Okay, team, we're here," I announced, trying to sound confident.

"Do we have to go in there?" Jake asked, looking at the entrance with uncertainty.

"Yes, but I'll be right by your side," I reassured him. "We'll face this together."

"Can we hold hands?" Lily asked, looking between us.

"Of course!" I said, reaching out for their tiny hands. Together, we walked toward the entrance, my heart pounding.

Inside, the courthouse was busy. People moved around, talking quietly and hurrying to their appointments. I felt a bit overwhelmed, but I kept my focus on Jake and Lily. They needed me to be strong.

We reached the waiting area, and I spotted our lawyer, Mr. Thompson. He waved us over with a friendly smile. "Good morning, Ryan! Kids, how are you doing?" he asked, crouching down to their level.

"Good!" they replied, though I could still sense their nerves.

Mr. Thompson looked at me. "Are you all ready for today?"

I nodded, even though I felt a bit unsure. "Trying to be."

We sat down together, and Mr. Thompson started to explain what would happen during the hearing. I listened closely, knowing how important it was for the twins to understand without getting scared.

"Today, we're going to talk about what's best for you, Jake and Lily," he said kindly. "It's all about keeping your family together."

"Will it be scary?" Jake asked, his voice trembling.

"Not if we stick together," I said firmly, giving his hand a reassuring squeeze. "And remember, I'm right here."

The minutes felt like hours as we waited, but I kept the conversation light. We played little games, like "I Spy," to take their minds off the situation.

When it was finally time for us to go into the courtroom, I felt my heart race. I stood up, holding their hands tightly. "Okay, let's show them how strong we are," I encouraged them.

As we walked into the courtroom, I took a deep breath. The judge was seated, looking serious. I wanted to make a good impression. "Stay close to me," I whispered to Jake and Lily.

We took our seats in the front row, and I could feel the weight of the day pressing down on my shoulders. But as I glanced at Jake and Lily, I remembered why I was fighting so hard.

They were my everything, and I would do anything to protect them. "Right, I will"
