Chapter 4 - ART EXHIBIT

The days following her encounter with Tobias felt different.

Ann found herself replaying their conversation in her mind, especially the part where he told her she needed to trust herself.

His words had lingered, like a thread of light in the darkness of her life. For the first time in ever in her life , Ann felt like she might actually have a future one where she could fell some form of breathe, think, and maybe even smile.

She hadn't expected Tobias to be such a nice presence in her life.

After their coffee, he'd reached out a couple more times, suggesting lunch breaks together, checking in on how she was doing.

His attention was warm, easy, never overwhelming, and it felt like something she could get used to.

One afternoon, as Ann sat in her cubicle, her phone buzzed with a new message. Tobias.

"Hey, I know it's last minute, but there's this art exhibit downtown I've been meaning to check out. Would you be interested in going? No pressure, of course."

Ann hesitated. She had never been to an art exhibit alone, and the thought of stepping out of her routine was both exciting and nerve-wracking.

But then she thought of Tobias, how he had made her feel seen, like she was more than just the shadow she felt trapped under at home.

She took a deep breath and typed back, "That sounds interesting. I' will love to go."

The evening of the art exhibit arrived, and Ann stood in front of her mirror, trying to pick something to wear. She wanted to look good but not like she was trying too hard.

She settled on a simple blouse and dark jeans, then added a touch of makeup to feel a little more confident.

When she arrived at the gallery, she spotted Tobias right away. He was leaning against the wall, looking up at a painting, his hands in his pockets.

He turned when he saw her, a genuine and an elegan smile spreading across his face.

"You made it," he said, his voice warm. "I'm glad. I wasn't sure if you'd show."

Ann felt a flutter in her chest. There was something about his presence that made her feel at ease. Maybe I deserve this, she thought.

"Of course I did," she replied, her voice steady despite the butterflies. "Thanks for inviting me."

They wandered through the exhibit together, chatting about the art, and some pieces she loved, others she didn't quite understand, but each conversation with Tobias seemed to open a door inside her.

He had a way of making her feel comfortable, like she was allowed to be herself, flaws and all.

As they stood in front of a large abstract piece, Tobias turned to her, his eyes meeting hers with that same intensity she remembered from their first meeting. "I'm really glad we did this. You've been on my mind lately, Ann. You've got this… energy, I don't know how to describe it. I think you're capable of so much more than you realize."

Ann felt a mix of warmth and unease. What is he trying to say?

"I'm just... I don't know if I can do it," she confessed, her voice quiet. "You said to trust myself, but sometimes I feel like I don't even know who I am anymore."

Tobias was silent for a moment before he spoke again, his voice softer now. "I think you're starting to figure that out. And I'll be here to help you with that, whatever you need."

His words made her heart race. It was more than just friendship now, wasn't it?

There was something deeper between them, an unspoken connection she wasn't sure how to name.

But for now, she allowed herself to lean into the moment.

Tobias was offering her something she had never had a chance to explore a part of herself she had long buried.

And maybe, just maybe, it was time she let herself be found.

As the weeks went by, their relationship continued to evolve. They spent more time together, talking about everything and nothing at all.

Tobias's presence was like a gentle anchor in the middle belt of Ann's chaotic life. She looked forward to their coffee breaks, their long walks after work, and the quiet moments when they didn't have to say anything at all to enjoy each other's company.

But even as their bond grew, Ann couldn't fully shake the tension at home. Alice's icy glares were still ever-present, and her father's indifference weighed heavily on her.

It was hard to reconcile the warmth she felt with Tobias with the coldness that awaited her every time she walked through the door.

One evening, after a particularly draining day at work, Ann found herself reaching out to Tobias.

She needed someone to talk to, someone who wouldn't judge her.

She texted him, "Can I call you? It's been a rough day."

Tobias didn't hesitate. "Of course. I'm here, Ann."

They talked for hours. Ann poured out her frustrations, her fears, and the dark weight of her home life. Tobias listened patiently, offering gentle words of encouragement.

It was the first time she had really allowed herself to admit how much it hurt, how deeply she longed for something more.

When they ended the call, Tobias didn't just say goodbye. He said, "You don't have to carry all of this alone, Ann. I'm here for you. And no matter what, you deserve to be happy."

The next morning, Ann woke up feeling different lighter, somehow. It was as if Tobias's words had begun to chip away at the fortress she'd built around her heart. Maybe she didn't have to do this all alone.

Maybe there was more for her out there something beyond the walls of her home, beyond the confines of the life she do always known.
