Wei's mind raced as he tried to make sense of it all. He felt a wave of frustration rushing through him. They were back in the real world, but this wasn't how he imagined it would go. He had hoped to embrace Mei Lan, to share in the relief of escaping the Abyss together, but now she didn't even remember him.
The room was silent, his comrades standing by in confusion. Ming stepped forward, her brow furrowed. "Wei, what happened in there? "
"Give me a moment," Wei said quietly, cutting her off without looking up. His focus remained on Mei Lan, who was still tense, her eyes darting around the library as if searching for an exit. She didn't trust him. She didn't know him.
"Mei, please," Wei said, taking a careful step toward her, trying not to frighten her any more than she already was. "We've known each other for a long time. You don't have to be afraid of me."
