Chapter 4 - Chapter 4 : A new beginning

I walked into the apartment, eager to share the news with Jennifer. But as I entered, I was met with a chilly silence. Jennifer sat on the couch, her eyes fixed on the floor, her expression unreadable.

The air was thick with tension as I hesitated, sensing the weight of her gaze. "What did you do, Rowan?" she asked, her voice low and even, but with a hint of accusation that cut deep.

I took a deep breath, trying to sound confident, but my words felt hollow. "I made a deal with Blackwood," I said, trying to convince myself as much as her. "He's offering us a chance to be part of something big, something that could change everything."

Jennifer's eyes narrowed, her gaze intensifying as she leaned forward, her voice firm but controlled. "What kind of deal?" she pressed, her words dripping with skepticism. "You didn't even consult me, didn't even think to discuss it with me before making a decision that affects both of us."

I felt a surge of defensiveness, but tried to explain, to justify my actions. "I know it was sudden, but I had to make a decision. Blackwood's offering us a partnership, a chance to be part of something revolutionary. He's willing to give us access to resources and technology that could help us achieve our goals."

But Jennifer's expression only darkened, her anger simmering just below the surface. "YOU HAD NO RIGHT TO MAKE THAT DECISION WITHOUT ME!!" she said, her words laced with hurt and betrayal, her voice cracking with emotion. "We're supposed to be partners, equals. But you just went behind my back and committed us to...what? You don't even know what you're getting us into."

I tried to defend myself, to explain, but Jennifer cut me off, her words pouring out in a torrent of pain and frustration.

"You always do this, Rowan. You always think you know what's best, without even considering my thoughts or feelings. You're so focused on your own goals, your own ambitions, that you don't even care who you hurt in the process."

The room fell silent, the weight of Jennifer's words hanging in the air like a challenge. And then, in a voice that was barely above a whisper, she said:

"It's over, Rowan. I can't do this anymore. I deserve better than someone who doesn't respect me or our partnership."

I felt like I'd been punched in the gut, my breath knocked out of me. I tried to speak, to apologize, but Jennifer just shook her head and stood up, her eyes welling up with tears.

"Goodbye, Rowan."

As I walked away from Jennifer's apartment, I couldn't shake off the feeling of emptiness inside me. I had lost the one person who truly mattered to me, all because of my own arrogance and ambition.I couldn't help but think about the deal I had made with Blackwood. I had convinced myself that it was the right thing to do, that it would bring me the success and recognition I deserved. But now, I wasn't so sure.

"I guess I am getting corrupted by the money and power I am about to receive, just like this society," I thought to myself, a bitter taste in my mouth.

I chuckled mirthlessly. "Hope I don't end up becoming the villain of my own story. Haha, as if."

I laughed at my own joke, but the humor was short-lived. My mind began to wander to the next day's meeting at Venture, and my nerves started to get the better of me. What would happen tomorrow? Would Blackwood reveal more about his plans? Would I be able to keep up with the demands of our partnership?

I pushed the thoughts aside and headed to my room, feeling a mix of anxiety and exhaustion. I picked up the bottle of beer from the bedside table and drank it all. This helped me forget about Jennifer for the moment. Then, I collapsed onto my bed, my mind racing with questions and doubts. But as I lay there, I couldn't shake off the feeling of unease that had settled in the pit of my stomach.

I closed my eyes, trying to calm my mind, and eventually drifted off to sleep, unsure of what the next day would bring.

The Next Day

I woke up to the sound of my alarm blaring in my ear, feeling a mix of excitement and nerves. Today was the day I would meet with Blackwood and the Venture team to discuss the details of our partnership.

I got out of bed and began getting ready, putting on my best suit and making sure I looked presentable. As I finished up, I glanced at my watch and saw that I still had a few minutes left before my transport was supposed to arrive.

I headed to the living room and looked out the window, expecting to see a car or limousine waiting for me. But to my surprise, I saw a helicopter landing on the rooftop helipad of my building.

I couldn't believe it. They had sent a helicopter for me. I felt a surge of excitement and a touch of intimidation. This was definitely not what I was used to.

I grabbed my briefcase and headed up to the rooftop, where a sleek black helicopter was waiting for me. The pilot greeted me with a nod and helped me aboard.

As we lifted off into the sky, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the sheer luxury and power that Blackwood and Venture represented. I was in deep now, and I wasn't sure if I was ready for what lay ahead.

The helicopter soared over the city, giving me a breathtaking view of the skyline before landing on the rooftop of a sleek, modern skyscraper. I could see the Venture logo emblazoned on the side of the building, and I knew I had arrived.

The helicopter landed smoothly on the rooftop helipad, and I stepped out onto the sleek, polished surface. The building was a marvel of modern architecture, with gleaming glass and steel that seemed to stretch on forever. The Venture logo was emblazoned on the side of the building in bold, silver letters, and I could see the words "Stellar Ops" etched below it.

As I looked around, a figure emerged from the rooftop entrance, dressed in a tailored suit and flashing a warm smile. It was William Blackwood himself, and he looked every inch the confident, successful entrepreneur.

"Rowan, old chap, welcome!" he boomed, striding towards me with a firm handshake. "Delighted you could make it. We've got a cracking day ahead of us."

I shook his hand, feeling a little awestruck by the sheer scale and luxury of my surroundings. "Thanks for having me, William," I replied, trying to sound confident. "Your building is incredible."

Blackwood chuckled, his eyes gleaming with pride. "Yes, we're quite chuffed with it, if I do say so myself," he said. "It's the perfect symbol of what we're trying to achieve here at Venture - pushing the boundaries of space, and all that rot."

He led me towards the rooftop entrance, where a sleek, silver elevator was waiting to take us down to the main floors. As we stepped inside, I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement and anticipation. What lay ahead?

The elevator doors closed with a soft whoosh, and we began our descent into the heart of the Stellar Ops complex. Blackwood leaned against the wall, his eyes fixed on me with an intensity that made me feel like I was under a microscope.

"So, Rowan, I trust you're ready to take the next step in our partnership?" he asked, his voice low and even.

I nodded, trying to match his level of calm. "Absolutely, William. I'm eager to lead the expedition and make history."

The elevator stopped on a floor marked "Expedition Command," and the doors slid open with a hiss. Blackwood stepped out, gesturing for me to follow him.

We walked into a bustling hub of activity, with millions of people working together towards a common goal. The majority were engaged in back-office work, poring over data and coordinating logistics. But thousands of others, like me, were expedition leaders, preparing to venture into the unknown.

"Welcome to the heart of Stellar Ops, Rowan," Blackwood said, his voice rising above the din. "Here, we're not just pushing the boundaries of space exploration - we're redefining them."

I gazed out at the sea of faces, my heart swelling with pride and purpose. I was about to lead an expedition that would change the course of history, and I knew that I was exactly where I was meant to be.

"Let's get started, William," I said, my voice firm and resolute. "We've got a universe to explore."

Blackwood led me to a large, circular room filled with holographic displays and sleek consoles. The walls were lined with rows of expedition leaders, each focused on their own mission parameters.

"Rowan, as you know, Stellar Ops is dedicated to expanding humanity's presence in the universe," Blackwood began, his eyes gleaming with excitement. "But what you may not know is the sheer scale of our operations."

He gestured to a holographic display behind him, where hundreds of stars and planets were marked with tiny, glowing icons.

"We have hundreds of teams, each led by an experienced expedition leader like yourself, Rowan. These teams are sent to different star systems, where they establish colonies and expand humanity's dominion over the cosmos."

I felt a surge of awe at the sheer scope of the operation.

"But that's not all, Rowan," Blackwood continued. "We're not just colonizing empty planets. We're encountering alien civilizations, some friendly, some not. And we're taking steps to ensure humanity's supremacy in the face of these encounters."

I raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "What kind of steps?"

Blackwood smiled, a hint of ruthlessness in his eyes. "Let's just say that we're prepared to do whatever it takes to ensure humanity's dominance. We're not just explorers, Rowan. We're conquerors."

I felt a shiver run down my spine as I realized the true extent of Stellar Ops' ambitions. But I was also excited, knowing that I was about to play a key role in this grand adventure.

I leaned forward, my curiosity piqued. "Exactly how do we conquer, William? I thought we were explorers, not warriors."

Blackwood chuckled, a hint of irony in his voice. "Ah, Rowan, we're not just warriors. We're realists. We understand that not every species will welcome us with open arms."

He gestured to a holographic display showing a friendly alien species, with whom humanity had established trade and cultural exchange.

"With species like the Xantheans, we take a peaceful approach. We trade, we share knowledge, we build friendships. It's a slow process, but it's effective. We expand our influence through cooperation and mutual benefit."

But then, his expression turned cold, and he gestured to another display showing a primitive, hostile alien species.

"But with species like the Krael, we take a different approach. They're primitive, aggressive, and unwilling to coexist. So, we send in our expedition teams, equipped with the latest high-tech mechas and weapons. We...neutralize the threat, and secure the planet for human colonization."

My eyes widened as the full weight of Stellar Ops' ambitions sank in, and I couldn't help but feel a sense of trepidation at the sheer scale of their plans.

"And what about species that are somewhere in between?" I asked, curious.

Blackwood's expression turned cold. "We eradicate them too. If they're not primitive enough to be dealt with through force, and not advanced enough to engage in trade, then they're of no use to us."

I frowned, puzzled. "Why? Why not try to find another way to interact with them?"

Blackwood raised an eyebrow. "What did you have in mind, Rowan?"

I thought for a moment. "Well, if they're not advanced enough to understand the value of their planet's resources, but they're not primitive enough to attack us on sight...why not try bartering with them? Offer them something they need, like food, in exchange for what we want."

Blackwood's expression changed from skepticism to surprise. "Go on."

I leaned forward, excited. "Think about it, William. They may not understand the value of their planet's minerals or technology, but they'll know that food is essential for survival. So, if we offer them food in exchange for what we want, they'll likely agree. And once they see the benefits of trading with us, they'll become friendly, even welcoming."

Blackwood stared at me, a slow smile spreading across his face. "Rowan, that's...brilliant. I think we made the right decision in making you an expedition leader. You think like a true strategist."

I smiled, feeling a sense of pride and accomplishment. "Thanks, William. I just think that sometimes, the best way to get what we want is to work together, rather than trying to force it."

"Alright, Rowan, I think we've covered everything," Blackwood said, standing up. "You'll start working with your team tomorrow, and we'll begin making preparations for the expedition."

I nodded, standing up as well. "Sounds good, William. But I have one more question - why did you want the Moon Flag so much?"

Blackwood's expression turned solemn, and he walked over to a nearby console, where he activated a holographic display. An image of the Moon Flag appeared, waving in the wind.

"During the First Intergalactic War, the Moon of Earth was the base of human operations," Blackwood explained. "It was the symbol of humanity's presence in space, and the flag that flew there was the symbol of our resistance against the alien invaders."

I listened intently, fascinated by the history.

"But the Moon itself was destroyed in the war," Blackwood continued. "And the only remaining piece of its lunar soil is the fragment embedded in the staff of this flag. That soil has mysterious magnetic properties that we don't fully understand, but it has one crucial effect - it repels the quantum field."

I raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "What does that mean?"

Blackwood's eyes gleamed with intensity. "It means that with the Moon Flag on board, our spaceship can pass through the quantum field that surrounds the galaxy. We can explore regions of space that were previously inaccessible to us."

I nodded, understanding the significance of the flag. "And that's why you wanted it so much."

"Exactly," Blackwood said, his eyes gleaming with intensity. "And that's why you, Rowan, will lead the first ever team to cross the quantum field. Your idea of using barter to establish relationships with alien species showed me that you think outside the box, that you're resourceful and clever. And that's exactly what we need to succeed in this mission."

I felt a surge of pride and excitement at the prospect of leading this historic mission.

"You're entrusting me with a lot, William," I said, feeling a sense of responsibility.

Blackwood nodded. "I am. But I believe in you, Rowan. You've shown me that you're not just a skilled operative, but a true leader. And I have no doubt that you'll make history by leading our team across the quantum field."

I smiled, feeling a sense of trust and respect for Blackwood. "I won't let you down, William."

Blackwood smiled back. "I know you won't, Rowan. Now let's get to work. We have a lot to prepare before our mission begins."
