Chapter 8 - Getting Experience

[•—•[]•—•]

(A/N: Who's your favourite anime character from the Pokemon series?

Mine personally is Sawyer as he stood out to me the most in the X & Y series.

[•—•{James Morgan}•—•]

"Let's start with [Howl]!" I command

Growlie staring straight into the Rhyhorn's eyes, proceeded to gather up energy and howl into the air. The shockwave approaching its opponent signalled the start of the fight. The first move made Rhyhorn's horn start to glow as it charged.

Seeing this the only right move here would be to dodge so I made up my mind.

"Growlie use [Flame Charge] to dodge!"

Fast on his feet, Growlie made multiple quick steps as his body lit on fire.

"lithh!"

With the incoming Rhyhorn on its way in a straight line, Growlie easily dodged the attack heading left. With a speed boost and attack boost now on my side, it gave me more confidence to get into a head-on collision.

Rhyhorn blitzing past Growlie, quickly stopped and adjusted its direction

"Rhy rhy..." The Rhyhorn growls out as its horn glows for a second time.

Watching it start its second charge, the Pokemon would finally attack.

"Prepare a [Crunch] for an opening, then dodge!" Saying this Rhyhorn was finally on the move. Groiwlie focusing up with his eyes sort of squinting. With dark energy already in his teeth, he uses his agility ladder training to dodge.

Rhyhorn who saw this widens its eyes in shock, halting in its tracks.

The Puppy Pokemon seeing as this is the appropriate time, pounced on the opportunity and crunched Rhyhorn's back.

*Bang*

"Rhyy!" Rhyhorn cries out.

"One more [Crunch]!" I shout wanting to get another hit in.

The Spikes Pokemon in a panic started to gather ground energy to its feet.

But only being able to see this just after my commands to go in for an attack my heartbeat quickens in realisation.

'Oh shit, that's bad.' With not enough time to physically know what move it could be. It was too late as Growlie went in for another hit. My voice was stuck in my throat as I could only watch what was going to occur.

*Bang*

Another [Crunch] lands to the side of the Rhyhorn, but this time one of its legs embeds itself into the ground creating cracks. Watching this I realised the move was either [Earthquake] or the more likely [Bulldoze].

*Crack..* *Crack!*

The ground under the two Pokemon started to crack and shake as some of the earth spiked in a circle around Rhyhorn. Growlie just finishing an attack was unfortunately in the vicinity.

Initially, Growlie was pulled into the earth, and soon after he was launched into the air with a few rocks following along.

"LITHEE!" Growlie groans out in pain.

"F*ck." I practically growl out. Growlie getting sent a few metres flying back. Watching this with gritted teeth my voice probably couldn't reach that far.

Walking a little further but still a safe distance away, this was to ensure Growlie heard me.

Getting a better look I see that Growlie successfully recovered but had a lot of damage. Rhyhorn who was to the side now instead of rushing stood still. Watching the now vigilant Pokemon my mind goes back to Growlie's other moves as attacking wasn't the only option.

'What else can I do besides [Ember] here.' I thought in frustration. Thinking of my choices of TM's I might have to reconsider getting more ranged attack TM's other than [Flamethrower].

A thought for later.

For now, though a quick recovery while Rhyhorn hesitates.

"Use [Morning Sun]!"

Growlie despite the recent hit immediately started to shine as a slight green hue covered him. Sighing in relief I keep an eye on Rhyhorn in case it decides to attack, and oh boy was I right. A few seconds after the green hue he realised that Growlie was healing up, starting to charge forward.

Seeing this there was a glint in my eyes.

"Growlie face Rhyhorn head-on with a [Crunch]!" I say already knowing the final decision.

Growlie cancelling his heal midway swiftly charged dark energy as he rushed forward with a determined expression.

Rhyhorn who I saw was extremely sluggish had had a slight limp trying to charge. This made it easier for me to make this decision seeing that Growlie had +1 speed and +1 attack.

The two Pokemon now in front of each other, charged.

As the two got closer Growlie with the obvious speed advantage got to hit first.

*Boom*

Rhyhorn getting hit is sent tumbling away and is now on his side with swirls in his eyes.

Growlie who saw this excitedly looked back at me and started to pant in joy. Staring back with an equally joyful grin, I couldn't help but put a hand over my heart and clench it. The speed of my increasing heartbeat could be felt with my body shaking a little.

'Is this excitement?" I question myself feeling giddy.

A real Pokemon battle.

It was a REAL Pokemon battle...

That's when I realised something.

My desire to battle just for the sake of it because of my situation.

IT'S NOW REAL!

MY DESIRE TO BATTLE...

[•—•{3rd Person's POV}•—•]

James who was in a trance was suddenly hit on the leg by a small bump. This small intrusion broke him out of his thoughts. Growlie now his trainer's attention pointed at the downed Rhyhorn, James understanding this proceeded to tell his maids to bring potions.

"It will be alright Growlie, he'll be fine," James assures Growlie.

Taking his time, James went up to Rhyhorn with the pup, with Growlie worriedly looking at Rhyhorn.

"Thanks for the battle buddy, I'll treat you to a lot of snacks." I hum out.

Rhyhorn who was now conscious started to drool at the thought. Being a wild Pokemon his thoughts on the highest quality food money could buy were appetising, and this was especially more worth it after a tough battle.

'I'll have to be patient and let Growlie learn his TM moves..." James thought sighing.

But a thought from the battle soon went back to him.

He needed to get rid of the risks of a ranged battle as his thought process from before was invalid. Truly learning from experience is what a trainer IS, and using that to mould yourself into the best version of yourself.

There's also the fact he forgot about [Fire Spin] which could have been used to control Rhyhorn's trajectory. Plus the advantage of setting up moves was really valuable if given enough time is dangerous.

"Hopkins! I need some TM's bought."

Hopkins running to his young master's side just listened in.

"Go order [Dragon Pulse], [Snarl], [Sunny Day], [Close Combat] for Growlie. Then [Shadow Ball], [Sludge Bomb], [Icy Wind], [Sunny Day] and [Rain Dance]." James says still remembering the TM's he refused to buy due to not fitting his physical attacking style.

But now he needed these moves and a few extra.

Hopkins hearing this just nods while noting all of this down.

"It will be done, young master..." He says shortly leaving.

James looking away from Hopkins proceeded to pull out his Pokeball, returning Growlie to heal him up personally and groom him. Taking Beldum's Pokeball out as well, he looks at them with a resigned expression.

'This is exciting...'

[•—•{James Morgan}•—•]

As the months went by and nearing the end of his long period of holiday, it was almost time to go back to the Kanto region.

"Metang use [Teleport] into an [Earthquake]."

Metang getting serious has it's eyes glow a pink hue before dissapearing. Quickly reappearing behind its opponent it has its arms glow in a dark brownish colour.

"[Protect] Magmar!" Hopkins says with his eyes basically popping out of his head.

Magmar seeing Metang running up to it, uses [Protect]. The Spitfire Pokemon completely exhausted from his opponent's hit and run tactics couldn't keep up not even with the level advantage. Despite being level 43, Magmar was on the receiving end of the beating.

This advantage was made even more useless with the muddy ground making it hard to maneuver due to the earlier [Rain Dance].

*Boom!*

Metang finally making an impact, gets sent a metre away.

While his opponent was sent flying towards his trainer, hitting the ground with swirls in its eyes.

"Good stuff Metang! Let's get back to physical training with the macho brace."

Seeing my Pokemons progress, I think back to them being my "pets", the amount spent on them is astronomical. But in reality, they will be protecting me in the future so I don't mind spending a lot of them.

It's not like it's gonna effect the family at all so whynaut.

Metang has learned his new TM moves so I've been really busy training him. First of all, I made a complete little profile on both of my Pokemon so I can keep track of their talents.

Writing down the last details of Metang's part of the notes. I take a good look at all of the little details I've added and get a proud look. I can't be too proud though as my current Pokemon's foundation is built on money.

They haven't really battled Pokemon outside of Hopkins, some people working at the manor and wild Pokemon. So it's time to let them experience harsh Pokemon battles,

"Hopkins, make a reservation to battle Cerulean's gym leader or his gym trainers," I say with unbridled excitement. The butler hearing this just sighs in resignation at his loss and listens to my words, nodding.

"This has to be some sort of work place abuse." I hear the guy murmur.

Shaking my head at his words, I looked at my Pokemon with admiration. There wasn't much I could really ask for right now, my strength needs to improve to catch the future Pokemon I desire.

'It's better if I battle them rather than have someone else retrieve them for me.' This was obviously for bonding and the fact they won't get caught anytime soon.

Right after Growlie got into his little hibernation absorbing all his TMs. Beldum, now Metang, only needed a single level so after a few days of battling was able to evolve.

This ended up making Metang enter his own hibernation to absorb his following TMs.

Looking back at my notes which were updated a few days ago at the Pokemon Center, I was satisfied.

'The power of money truly prevails.' I thought realising how stupidly easy it was to level up a Pokemon initially through money.

But then again not everyone can do what I do as even most rich kids would only be able to do this for a few Pokemon. To participate in the league you need six Pokemon and having one carry simply isn't enough in my opinion.

The problems of reaching higher levels of strength would be more prominent later. There's a reason why rich kids aren't the ones dominating the competitive scene right now, but people with connections.

It is still something I should worry about when the time comes, but due to me having all the time in the world, it can wait.

Next though was Growlie.

The difference between a pseudo-legendary and a normal Pokemon was honestly staggering. But not much of a surprise considering that Metang is in the second stage while Growlie is in his first.

While looking at my notes, I heard some footsteps getting closer.

Curiously turning around, a man wearing a suit and a clean look entered my vision.

"Who are you?" I ask casually.

The man making his way over swiftly introduced himself and his goal for being there,

"Hello, young master I've been sent by your father. This is concerning about the place you recommended to get your starter." He says getting my full attention.

"The village of dragons next to Opelucid City..."
