Chereads / The King and His Lover / Chapter 22 - CHAPTER 22

Chapter 22 - CHAPTER 22

The next two days felt like an eternity for both Xena and Aldric. Every moment she spent in the palace reminded her of the impossible chasm between them. Each glance exchanged with the queen became a calculated dance of deception, while the whispers of palace servants buzzed around her like bees—constant reminders of the world outside their secret.

Aldric threw himself into his duties as king, hoping the weight of governance would drown the ache in his heart. He convened meetings with his advisors, discussing matters of state, alliances, and the brewing tensions with the rival kingdom. But despite the pressing matters at hand, his thoughts always drifted back to Xena: her laughter, the warmth of her hand, the way her eyes sparkled when she spoke.

Meanwhile, the queen's awareness of their relationship festered into something more dangerous. Elara, cold and calculating, kept a close watch on Aldric and Xena, crafting her own plans for revenge. Sleepless nights were spent pouring over scrolls and gathering allies within the court.

Elara knew her power as queen was slipping. The rumors of Aldric's infatuation with the maid only fueled her wrath, igniting a fire of jealousy that threatened to consume her. One evening, she summoned her spymaster, Lord Cassius, to her chambers.

"Cassius, I need you to find out everything about Xena," she commanded, her voice laced with venom. "I want to know her every move, her background, her connections. If she's a threat to my reign, I will eliminate her."

Cassius, with his ever-cunning smile, nodded. "As you wish, my queen. It will be done."

Two days later, Xena arrived at their secret spot early, her heart racing with anticipation. The secluded grove had become her sanctuary, a place where she could escape the burdens of her mission, if only for a moment. She arranged the grasses, ensuring everything was perfect for Aldric's arrival.

When he appeared, the world around them seemed to fade into insignificance. His presence was magnetic, pulling her in like a moth to a flame. A rush of excitement surged through her, a feeling both familiar and overwhelming.

"Xena," Aldric breathed, his voice low and filled with longing. "You look beautiful."

"Thank you, Aldric. I've missed you." The words slipped out before she could stop them, and she felt her cheeks flush.

"Every moment apart has felt like a lifetime," he admitted, stepping closer. "I've been thinking about what we discussed last time."

"And what's that?" she asked, trying to keep her voice steady despite the rapid beat of her heart.

"I can't keep pretending everything is fine. I want to explore what we have, to see where this can lead."

Xena's heart fluttered. She wanted to feel the same, to plunge headfirst into the bliss of their connection. But the shadows of her mission loomed over her, reminding her of the dark path she was meant to walk.

"Do you really think we can have something real?" she whispered. "In a world filled with duty and expectations?"

"Real or not, it's worth fighting for," Aldric said fiercely, taking her hands in his. "I will fight for you, Xena. For us."

She wanted to believe him, to cast aside her fears and embrace this love. But the weight of her sister's fate hung heavily in her mind, dragging her down. "But there are consequences," she said, her voice trembling. "I could lose everything, Aldric. My family… my life."

He brushed a strand of hair behind her ear, his fingers lingering on her cheek. "And what about me? I stand to lose everything too—my throne, my crown, my title. I won't let anything keep us apart."

As they stood in the dappled sunlight, a serene moment enveloped them—until hurried footsteps shattered the calm. Panic surged through Xena as she pulled away, scanning the area for danger.

"Xena!" It was Lily, rushing toward them, her face pale. "You have to hide! The queen's guards are looking for you!"

Aldric's expression turned grim. "What do they want?"

"Your Majesty, they know you've been meeting with her!" Lily gasped, bowing low in curtsy to the King. "They're asking questions. We need to go—now!"

Xena's heart raced. "Aldric, you have to leave. If they see you—"

"No," he said firmly, "I'm not leaving you."

"Please, you'll be putting yourself in danger. I can't let that happen." Tears pricked her eyes, the reality of their situation crashing down around them.

"Xena, listen to me. I won't abandon you. We can't let them tear us apart."

"Aldric, we can't be seen together. You have to go—I'll be fine," Xena insisted.

He placed a soft kiss on her forehead and whispered, "Please be strong. I'll make sure nothing bad happens to you." Then, reluctantly, he turned and left.

Xena and Lily waited a moment, ensuring Aldric was gone, before attempting to make their own escape. But before they could move, a group of guards burst into the clearing, led by Rowan, the captain of the guard.

"Xena! There you are!" Rowan called, his eyes scanning the area. "The queen demands your presence."

Lily stepped back, fear evident in her eyes. Xena's heart sank. There was no way out.

The grand hall was dimly lit when Xena was brought before the queen. Elara's icy gaze pierced through the shadows.

"You've kept me waiting, maid," Elara said, her voice smooth yet dripping with venom.

"I'm sorry, Your Majesty," Xena replied, keeping her head bowed, though a fire burned inside her.

"I've heard troubling reports about your interactions with the king," Elara continued, her tone sharp. "What do you have to say for yourself?"

Xena's heart pounded. "I only do my duties, Your Majesty. I am a maid, nothing more."

"Don't play coy with me," the queen snapped. "I know about your meetings. You've been careless."

Xena lifted her chin, defiance sparking in her. "Your Majesty, I have done nothing wrong. I am simply fulfilling my role."

Elara stepped closer, her presence looming like a dark cloud. "Your role? Do you think your position as a maid gives you the right to approach my husband? To worm your way into his heart?"

"I am not trying to take anything from you," Xena said, her voice steady despite the tension rising. "The king is a kind man, and I—"

"Enough!" Elara's voice echoed through the hall. "You will cease all contact with Aldric. I will not allow you to jeopardize my marriage or my power."

"Your Majesty, I—"

"End your relationship with Aldric," Elara ordered, her voice a sharp blade. "Or else…"

"Or else what?" Xena asked, anger flaring in her chest.

Elara's expression darkened, her eyes flashing with fury. "You dare speak to me like that? You have no idea what I'm capable of."

She took a deep breath, her fury cooling into cold calculation. "The moment you stepped into my world, you became a pawn in a much larger game."

"What do you want?" Xena demanded. "What will it take for you to leave me alone?"

"Simple. You will end your relationship with Aldric and never disobey my orders again. If you refuse, I will ensure you do not live to see him again."

Xena's stomach dropped. Elara turned and left, her words hanging in the air like a death sentence.

That night, Xena couldn't sleep. Her mind raced with thoughts of Aldric, her sister, and the queen's threats. She felt trapped in a web of lies, her heart torn between love and duty.

As dawn broke, she made a decision. She had to confront Aldric and reveal everything—no matter the cost. The truth was her only weapon in a world full of deceit.
