Chapter 15 - Chapter 15: Unraveling the Secrets

Sophia's heart pounded as the cold realization hit her. Alexander had been distant lately, and every time she brought up the subject of their future, he avoided the conversation. She stood in the gallery, staring at one of her unfinished dreamcatchers. Its threads were tangled, a perfect reflection of her own emotions. She thought about their contract marriage, which was supposed to be a business arrangement. But somewhere along the line, it had blurred into something more—at least for her.

"Is it just me?" she whispered to herself.

The past few weeks had been a whirlwind. Alexander had become increasingly involved in the affairs of his family, particularly with his brother Julian, whose influence seemed to stretch like a shadow over everything. The whispers of The Order had grown louder, too, their presence felt in every corner of her life. But it was Alexander's silence that troubled her the most.

Determined to confront him, Sophia made her way to the Bellvue estate. The mansion loomed in the distance, an imposing fortress that now felt more like a prison. She hadn't been back since the night of their hastily arranged marriage ceremony—a flash marriage done under the pretense of protection. The reasons behind it still felt unclear, but she had trusted him.

As she entered the estate, she noticed Julian standing in the hallway, his expression cold and calculating as usual. He glanced at her, eyes narrowing slightly.

"Sophia," he greeted her coolly. "What brings you here? Shouldn't you be working on your art for the upcoming exhibition?"

"I need to speak with Alexander," she said, her voice firm.

Julian raised an eyebrow, but said nothing as he gestured for her to follow. They walked through the long corridors, the silence between them heavy with unspoken tension. When they reached Alexander's study, Julian stopped and knocked on the door before pushing it open.

Sophia stepped inside to find Alexander standing by the window, his back turned to her. He didn't move when she entered, didn't acknowledge her presence. It was as though the weight of whatever burden he carried was too much for him to bear.

"Alexander," she said, her voice soft but filled with urgency. "We need to talk."

He didn't respond immediately, but when he finally turned to face her, there was a darkness in his eyes that made her heart sink. "Sophia, you shouldn't have come here."

She frowned. "What do you mean? We're supposed to be in this together. This marriage, the gallery, everything—"

"Everything has changed," Alexander interrupted, his voice low and pained. "You don't understand what's at stake."

Sophia stepped closer, reaching out to touch his arm, but he pulled away. "Then explain it to me," she pleaded. "I deserve to know the truth."

Alexander's eyes met hers, and for a moment, she saw the man she had fallen for—the one who had promised to protect her, to cherish her. But that moment passed quickly, replaced by the cold reality of their situation.

"My family… The Order… It's not just about the gallery or our marriage. There are forces at play that you can't comprehend."

Sophia's heart ached. "What forces? Tell me, Alexander. I've trusted you with everything, but you keep pushing me away."

Alexander turned back to the window, his voice barely above a whisper. "I'm trying to protect you. If you knew the full truth, you'd be in even more danger."

The frustration inside her boiled over. "What about us?" she asked, her voice shaking. "Was any of it real? Or was it all just part of your plan to keep me close to The Order?"

At that, Alexander spun around, his eyes blazing with emotion. "Of course it was real! Don't ever doubt that, Sophia." He stepped closer, his voice softening. "But this world… it's not safe for you. The more involved you are, the more danger you're in."

Sophia searched his face, looking for the truth. "Then why did you marry me? Was it really to protect me, or was it something else?"

Alexander hesitated, and in that brief pause, Sophia felt her heart shatter. She knew the answer before he even spoke.

"I had no choice," he finally admitted, his voice filled with regret. "It was the only way to keep The Order at bay. They… they want you, Sophia. Your power, your connection to the dreamcatchers. If I hadn't married you, they would have taken you by force."

Sophia felt a cold chill run down her spine. "So all of this… it's because of them?"

Alexander nodded. "I'm sorry, Sophia. I never wanted it to be like this."

Tears welled up in her eyes, but she blinked them back, refusing to break down in front of him. "And what about Julian? He's been acting strange. What does he have to do with all of this?"

Alexander's jaw tightened. "Julian has his own agenda. He's been working with The Order behind my back, trying to manipulate the situation to his advantage."

Sophia's heart raced. "What are you saying?"

"I'm saying that Julian can't be trusted. He's been plotting against me, against us, for months. And now, I fear he's about to make his move."

The room seemed to spin around Sophia as the weight of Alexander's words sank in. Her mind raced with questions, with fear, with uncertainty.

"Then what do we do?" she asked, her voice trembling. "How do we stop him?"

Alexander stepped closer, taking her hand in his. "We need to stand together, Sophia. Whatever happens next, we face it together. I promise you, I'll do everything in my power to keep you safe."

Sophia looked into his eyes, searching for the truth. And for the first time in weeks, she saw it—the love, the fear, the determination. Despite everything, he was still the man she had fallen for. But the danger that surrounded them was greater than she had ever imagined.

"I trust you," she whispered, her voice barely audible.

Alexander nodded, pulling her into his arms. "I won't let them take you. Not now, not ever."

As they stood together, the weight of the coming storm pressed down on them. The battle against The Order was far from over, and with Julian's betrayal looming, the stakes had never been higher.

But one thing was certain: their bond, forged in love and betrayal, would be tested like never before.

And in the shadows, Julian watched, a sinister smile playing on his lips as his plan slowly unfolded.

The game was far from over.
