Chapter 42 - Chapitre 41

Emily was jolted out of her reverie as the sound of a hard knock on the front door filled the room. She sat up straight, her heart pounding in her chest. Who could it be at this hour?

She glanced over at the clock, seeing that it was 6 a.m. She hadn't realized she had been sitting there for hours, lost in thought. Slowly, she stood up and walked towards the front door

As Emily opened the door, she was met by two police officers standing on her doorstep. They were both grim-faced and stern, their expressions serious.

__1st officer: Good morning, Miss Johnson," the first officer said politely. "We're here to ask you some questions about a certain Marshall Mathers. Do you know him?"

Emily's heart skipped a beat at the mention of Marshall' name.

__Emily' "Yes, he's my boyfriend." she said uneasily. "What's this about?"

__1st officer: "Can we come in, Miss Johnson?" the other officer asked, his voice firm. "We need to ask you a few more questions."

She hesitated for a moment, then nodded and stepped aside, gesturing for the officers to come in. She led them to the living room, where they all sat down. The officers exchanged a glance before turning to her.

__1st officer: "Miss Johnson," the first officer began. "I must inform you that Marshall Mathers is a dangerous criminal. He had been hospitalized in a mental hospital for the murder of a family. He had escaped from a mental institution two years ago and unfortunately he came in Delaware.

As the officer spoke, Emily felt her heart drop. She couldn't believe what she was hearing. Marshall, a killer? It couldn't be true.

She knew that Marshall had been secretive about his past, but she never imagined that he was a murderer. She felt a wave of fear and confusion wash over her. The man she had loved, the father of her unborn child, was a wanted criminal.

She thought Marshall was talking about being a drug dealer or something like that, but not at this level.

Images of Marshall flooded her mind, his eyes filled with love and tenderness. She couldn't believe that the man she loved was capable of such horrifying crimes.

__Emily: "But...that can't be," she said, her voice trembling. "Marshall isn't a killer. He's a good person. I was with him for two years. If he had escaped from mental hospital, do you think I wouldn't notice his behavior? Or that he wouldn't have harmed me if he was a killer?"

The officers looked at her sympathetically.

__2nd Officer: "I know this is hard to take in, Miss Johnson, but that's the truth. He's from Detroit. He had been judged mentally ill by the court. After he escaped, the hospital hidden the truth and didn't alert the police because they were afraid of their reputation."

Emily felt like her world was collapsing around her. She couldn't believe that the man she loved could have done such terrible things. Her mind raced with questions. Had she missed something? Were there signs she had overlooked?

Her mind was spinning with all the information they were giving her. She had spent two years with Marshall, but now it seemed like none of it had been real. She had fallen in love with a man who had been hiding his darkest secrets from her, and she had been too blind to see it.

Emily took a deep breath, trying to compose herself but she failed.

__Emily: "No, I can't believe it," she said firmly. "I've known him for two years, and he's never been anything but good to me. He can't be a killer."

__1st officer: We have something to show you miss. We usually don't show the evidence but I think you deserve to know the truth."

The second officer gave her a box.

She looked at him with curiosity. She opened it. It contained photos of her and Marshall together, along with a diary. Her curiosity quickly turned to shock as she realized what it was.

Emily looked at the photo in shock and disbelief. They were pictures of her and Marshall, smiling and hugging each other, looking like a happy couple. There were also pictures of her taken from a distance, and it was clear that he had been following her without her knowing. She didn't understand why he would do such things. It was scary and creepy.

Then she turned to the diary. As she flipped through the pages, her heart was racing, she saw that it was filled with entries written in Marshall's hand. It was a detailed record of his thoughts, his feelings, and his actions. Everything was laid out in black and white, impossible to deny.

Her eyes widening with horror as she read about his twisted thoughts, his violent fantasies, and his hatred of society.

Her eyes landed on a page where all the truth about their relationship is revealed, slapping her at her face.

She was frozen. She couldn't believe what she was reading. Marshall dated her only because he wanted her to be his victim. It was just a twisted scheme to have her wrapped around his finger before he killed her.

She closed the diary, feeling sick to her stomach. She collapsed onto the couch, tears streaming down her face as she read through the diary. It was all too much to take in at once. The betrayal, the manipulation, the lies.

How had she been so blind? How could she have missed all the signs? Suddenly, everything made sense: the way Marshall had always seemed a bit secretive about his past, the way he had seemed overly protective of her, the odd comments he had made about her beauty and vulnerability.

Her world shattered into pieces at that moment. All the happiness and love she had felt in their relationship were suddenly replaced by fear and betrayal. She felt like she had been living in a bubble, blind to the reality of who Marshall really.

She felt sick to her stomach, realizing how she had been used and deceived by the man she loved. She had been just a pawn in his sick game. She felt like she had been betrayed by the only person she thought she could trust, the one person she loved more than anything in the world. It was a hard pill to swallow, but she couldn't deny the evidence right in front of her.

The officers watched her quietly, their expressions sympathetic. They knew that her world had just taken a sudden turn, and they were there to help her make sense of it all. The officers exchanged a quick glance before the first officer spoke up gently:

__2nd officer: "We're sorry miss. We can't imagine what you're feeling right now. But everything will be okay, we promise. You will be under our protection."

__Emily: "How... How did you find out..?" she finally asked, her voice shaking

1st officer: "There was a dead woman in his house. He's also behind all those missing during those two years miss. We find pictures of several young women and also...corps"

Her eyes wide open. It was so much information to take all of sudden. She couldn't believe her eyes. Her brain stopped working for seconds.

She was in a relationship with the one who terrorized the town for two years. Yet she didn't notice anything. She felt guilty for never noticing how twisted he was.

She was living in a bubble that she didn't even realize who was the man he fell in love with. She was living "happily" with the one who take all those innocent souls. She felt like she would faint in any second.

__1st officer: "He's out and dangerous. We need to know if you saw him last night, and if so, what he said to you and where did he go."

She didn't reply, still shocked.

__2nd officer: "We know it's hard but none one will be safe as long as he's living among the society...Help us please."

__Emily: "... Yesterday he came and told me he has to left. But he didn't tell me why or where he's going....He just said police was searching for him."

Her voice was shaky as she spoke. She had thought Marshall loved her, but she could see now that it had all been a lie. Everything he had told her, every word he had spoken, had been nothing but a deception. It made her sick to think that she had been so blind to the truth.

__2nd officer: "If you remember anything, please contact us miss."

She nodded. The officers stood up and was about to leave. They fell bad about for her. It was so evident that she was devastated. The bid their goodbye and left.

Left alone again in her house, Emily felt empty and lost. The silence was unbearable, and she couldn't shake off the feeling of betrayal and deception. As she sat there, struggling to come to terms with everything she had just learned.

All this time, she had thought she was in a loving relationship with Marshall, but it had all been a facade. He had pretended to love her only to use her as his next victim. He was also killed other women, he was a monster, a cold murderer who take pleasure killing people.

She couldn't believe how fooled she had been. She was so naive and gullible. But more than anything, she felt betrayed and cheated. She had given him her heart, her trust, everything, and he had taken it all and shattered it into pieces. Marshall had looked her in the eye and lied to her, all while pretending to be the perfect boyfriend. It was a betrayal that hit her deeply, and she knew she would never trust anyone the same way again.

She couldn't help but wonder why Marshall had chosen her for his sick games. Was it just because she was vulnerable, or was there something more to it? Did he choose her specifically because she was an easy target, and he knew he could manipulate her?

She wished that she could go back in time and erase the last two years of her life.

The reality slapped hard. Marshall was a dangerous serial killer on the loose, and she had just handed over her life to him willingly. It was a mistake she would never forgive herself for, and one that would haunt her forever.

As she sat there, overwhelmed by the terrible revelations, her hand instinctively moved to her stomach. The reminder of her unborn child made her feel a deep sense of despair. She realized that she had been bringing a life into this world, not knowing the horrible truth about the father.

Tears welled up in her eyes as she thought about what the future held for her and her baby. She had always wanted to be a mother, but she had never imagined that she would become a single one, and more terrifying, that she would leave with the child of a serial killer.

She couldn't help but wonder what kind of life her child would have. Would they inherit their father's violent tendencies? Would they be cursed to suffer the same fate as Marshall, trapped in a cycle of violence and madness. How could she protect her child from the secrets of its father's past? How will the society treat them? Despite everything, she could never bring herself to end the pregnancy. It was her child too and an innocent being.

Emily was determined to protect her child at all costs even if she was scared and uncertain about the future. She knew that she had to be strong, not only for herself, but for her unborn baby. She made a silent promise to give her child a better life, filled with love and compassion, and to shield them from the darkness that lurked in their father's shadow.
