Chapter 4 - Kai Lumiere, Part-Timer: Pt. 1

"So, I need to ask you." Jamie started, sorting through today's paperwork with the rookie, Katie Henson. There wasn't too much cases to investigate today, they were reserved for the more experienced in the other girl's field. Much to Katie's dismay, he was given duty to the paperwork by the Captain. "Why did you use a glove to cast some magic back there? I thought magicians use wands or something? Maybe just bare hands?"

"You don't seem to know too much about magic, Jamie," Katie said, looking unimpressed at what the corporal just said. "But it's fair, a lot of the people end up being wizards or alchemists or scientists here at Mahika."

Katie stapled a couple papers before piling them into one folder. "And- let's just say I had a really hard time casting spells on my own. I almost had to be held back a year because of it, so um... I asked my sister to make me something that might help me with this." She took out her glove, looking at it as if it was a proud treasure to be taken care of. "She's an amazing Artificer, you know? I'm sure she's going to succeed where she is."

"... The hell's an artificial... What?"

Katie could feel herself frown at Jamie's question. "... You really don't know much about magic, don't you?" She asked. Jamie had to turn away from her in response. "What? It's not like I cared too much about it." She replied. "You're a rookie, but you seem to know your job, hm?"

The detective laughs proudly. "Of course! I studied for four years anyway, this is practically my dream job! But you, Jamie, you seem very gifted! I mean- 17 years old and you became a cop? How did you-"

"Stop right there, Rookie." Jamie commanded, not even turning an eye to face her. "You seriously get into gossip with the other detectives here? I dunno if I mentioned this to you, but I do not entertain stuff about myself to people I don't know."

Silence followed. Katie felt bad that she suddenly made Jamie close up like a clam. She was starting to warm up a little, and her curiosities about the arcane showed that, but... What's she hiding? It seems like she has so many layers to peel off about this woman.

The silence broke when they both heard a ding! from the desk. It was Jamie's phone, which is worn with glass cracks and a faded case compared to Katie's new phone that is all the rage in recent months, carefully decorated with a cute phonecase. "One moment. Just continue what you're doing, Rookie." She requested the moment she saw the name on the notification.

"Hey." Jamie called out to Katie, "You into some music or something?"

"Huh- What? Oh! Uh-" Katie stuttered, because instead of grouping up today's papers, she was already eating her lunch. Jamie would have scolded her for doing so, she didn't like people slouching around, but since it was lunchtime already, all she could do is to push through her subject. "You don't mind coming to concerts, no?" She asked.

"Huh? I mean, yes! I just didn't think you're the musical type, though... Why?" Katie inquired. Jamie waved her phone as if they were the tickets that her chatmate was talking about. "A family friend got me tickets to the concert. For two. That idiot wanted me to go with someone. You in or not?"

"Huh, of course I'll come with you! What band are you talking about anyway?"

"Oh, uh... Sapphire Dreams. Heard of them?"

Katie's eyes widen. Sapphire Dreams?! No way Jamie knew of the best rock band that she ever heard. She has been a fan ever since they debuted 4 years ago, the same year that Katie moved from the countryside to Mahika City to get her degree. She particularly is in love with their keyboardist, Kai Lumiere, the elven boy who was known for his amazing vocals and keeping a lifestyle that's not common among elves, as endangered as they are now. With all the stuff about the band she keeps in her apartment, this is her one chance to meet them in person!

"Oh my gods, Jamie. You secured tickets to SAPPHIRE DREAMS?! Oh my gods, I'll DEFINITELY come with you! This is my dream come true! don't get me started when I see Kai-"

"Okay, calm down, Rookie. Just dress up nice later then I'll drive us to the venue. I'll get those tickets from my friend." She said, ignoring whatever Katie was yapping about at this point as she trains her attention on her phone once again.
