Pallet Town.
In his garden, Professor Oak was watering his plants when he glanced at the towering mountain in the distance. Dark clouds were gathering ominously over its peak.
"This is..."
Professor Oak paused, his face showing mild confusion.
"Bulbaaa!"
Covered in water, a very annoyed Bulbasaur lashed out with its vines, flinging Professor Oak several feet away with a powerful push.
Thud!
The professor tumbled through the air in an ungraceful arc before hitting the ground.
Dusting himself off, he muttered, "This feels oddly reminiscent of Kikuko's work..."
Meanwhile, on the other side of the lake, martial artist Flint stared at the massive form of Giant Gengar.
The oppressive atmosphere created by Giant Gengar weighed heavily on him, its sheer size and the storm clouds swirling above making the scene otherworldly.
"Wait a minute!"
Flint suddenly remembered: the spot where this behemoth appeared was exactly where the traveler on Dragonair had landed earlier.
From his angle, Flint hadn't noticed the exchange between Giant Gengar and Gengar, nor had he seen their peculiar "conversation."
That person could be in danger!
Flint clenched his jaw and scanned the area, trying to find the fastest path across the lake.
But before he could act, he noticed something strange.
The massive Gengar had started fighting... a much smaller Gengar?
Even more baffling, the smaller Gengar managed to briefly go toe-to-toe with the giant!
Flint slowed his pace, incredulous at what he was seeing.
The smaller Gengar was clearly outmatched in size and strength, yet it had somehow held its own.
Before long, the smaller Gengar retreated, returning to its trainer.
"All settled?" Johan asked, his tone casual despite the tension.
Gengar scratched its head and muttered sheepishly, "Ka-kah..."
I didn't understand a word it said.
What?
You didn't understand a word, yet you spent all that time having a nonsensical "chat" with it?
Johan didn't know whether to laugh or cry at this revelation.
"Oowu!"
Vulpix suddenly stiffened, its six snowy tails bristling as it growled a warning.
Johan turned to see Giant Gengar clasp its massive hands together, a swirling orb of pure darkness forming rapidly between its palms.
His expression darkened.
"Gengar!"
"Ka-kah!"
Immediately understanding, Gengar's body became enveloped in dark mist. With surprising speed, it conjured its own Shadow Ball, its small hands moving rapidly to form a sphere almost as large as itself.
For all its diminutive stature, Gengar's Shadow Ball was shockingly comparable in size to the one Giant Gengar had created.
These ancient Pokémon sure do like oversized attacks... Johan mused.
BOOM!
The two Shadow Balls collided mid-air, triggering a deafening explosion that sent shockwaves rippling across the area.
The nearby lake surged, waves crashing against the shore as Johan quickly took charge.
"Vulpix, Aurora Veil! Dragonair, Hydro Pump! Tinkatuff, Swords Dance! Now!"
"Ka-kah?"
Giant Gengar blinked in surprise as its smaller counterpart successfully neutralized its attack.
In that fleeting moment, Vulpix summoned a shimmering Aurora Veil of dazzling frost, layering it for extra protection.
The lake's surface froze over in patches, and an icy wind swept through the area.
Guess all that practice with Vulpix's Aurora Veil was worth it, Johan thought.
Dragonair followed up with a powerful Hydro Pump, the water jet slamming into Giant Gengar's torso.
This time, the attack didn't even need Dragonair's usual lucky "aim." With a target this enormous, it was impossible to miss.
Though visibly unhurt, the hit seemed to enrage Giant Gengar even further. Its expression twisted in anger, and its movements became more erratic.
Worse still, the fact that the smaller Gengar's Shadow Ball had matched its own only fueled its frustration.
"Ka-KAAAH!!"
With an earth-shaking roar, Giant Gengar raised its hands toward the swirling black clouds above.
The darkened sky churned and responded to its summons, streams of shadowy lightning streaking down toward the behemoth.
From these clouds, it began forming an even larger Shadow Ball, crackling with arcs of black lightning.
"Ka... ka-kah?"
Gengar froze, staring at the colossal attack in stunned silence.
It can do that?!
Looking down at its hands, Gengar hesitated for only a moment before breaking into a mischievous grin. It too began to draw energy from the clouds, mimicking Giant Gengar's movements.
Amazingly, the black clouds above responded to Gengar as well, streaming tendrils of shadowy energy down toward its much smaller frame.
Giant Gengar: ???
Even the ancient behemoth seemed momentarily baffled.
"What the heck, Gengar? You're copying moves now?" Johan exclaimed, slack-jawed.
"Ka-kah!"
And just like that, Gengar's own oversized Shadow Ball was ready, its dark energy pulsing ominously.
For a brief moment, Johan couldn't help but think it resembled a tiny "Spirit Bomb."
BOOM!
The two massive Shadow Balls collided once more, creating an even larger explosion that sent shockwaves radiating outward.
"Draaa!"
"Chu!"
Dragonair and Tinkatuff worked together to stabilize their footing as Vulpix reinforced the Aurora Veil.
The dust settled, revealing Giant Gengar standing unscathed.
In contrast, Gengar was panting heavily, its usually vibrant color looking pale.
It had clearly overexerted itself.
Johan frowned. "This isn't working... Vulpix's barriers won't last forever, and Giant Gengar's stamina is on a whole other level."
That left only one option: wake up Giant Alakazam.
But as Johan glanced back at the altar, the golden "Eye of Alakazam" and "Golden Spoon" remained stubbornly inert.
"Guess we'll have to try something else..."
A sudden thought struck him.
"Gengar," Johan began, an almost mischievous glint in his eye. "Why don't you introduce your 'virtual pet' to your 'relative' over there?"
"Ka-kah?!"
Gengar blinked, confused by the bizarre suggestion.
What's my electronic pet gonna do?
Still, it obediently fished out its phone, its ghostly fingers quickly swiping across the screen.
A holographic display sprang to life, revealing a pixelated, crimson-eyed figure: Rotom-OS.
Giant Gengar froze mid-attack, its crimson eyes locking onto the screen.
Its expression shifted, a flicker of recognition flashing across its massive face.
"Ka... ka-kah?"
Gengar tilted its head, baffled.
What's so interesting about this thing?
But Johan seized the moment, reaching out with his Aura to amplify Gengar's next move.
"Put it to sleep," Johan commanded softly.
Gengar grinned wickedly, raising its hands as its eyes began to glow faintly.
Tame this wild beast!
Giant Gengar shuddered. Its movements slowed, the dark clouds above dissipating as its colossal form began to shrink.
Johan smiled. "Goodnight, old friend."
As Giant Gengar finally vanished, the black orb it was linked to fell to the ground with a hollow thud.
Gengar, meanwhile, was busy stuffing a massive piece of Spell Tag—or something that resembled it—into its mouth.
"Gengar!" Johan's voice rose in exasperation.
Caught red-handed, Gengar froze, then grinned sheepishly.
This oversized tag would probably attract more ghost Pokémon than Johan cared to deal with... but at least, for now, the immediate threat had passed.
From across the lake, Flint stood motionless, his jaw slack.
"Did... did they just put that thing to sleep?"
His mind reeled as he tried to process what he'd just witnessed.
And who even is that guy?
