Chapter 1 - CHAPTER 1

*BEEP BEEP BEEP*

The alarm on the phone blared early in the morning, exactly at 6 a.m. But despite that, the young man who was lying on the bed seemed to ignore it and continued sleeping.

But a second later, the young man suddenly opened his eyes wide and looked around him with utmost vigilance, as if he were a predator looking for its prey. After looking around for a couple more seconds, the young man sighed and sat on the edge of his bed.

The young man stood and immediately did some morning exercises. After he was done with his routine exercises, he stood up and stretched while walking to his bathroom. He took his towel from the rack and immediately took a bath in the chilly morning with cold water. You might ask, what's the reason behind all this behavior? Well, we'll get into that soon.

After bathing and putting on his pants, the young man looked at himself in the big mirror. "Not bad," he smiled proudly at himself and struck some poses. Although his body was not as refined as those of Greek gods, it was acceptable.

He then put on clothes and went to the kitchen to prepare some breakfast. After 20 minutes, the breakfast was ready, and he went back to his apartment balcony and ate his breakfast while basking in the morning sunlight.

After the peaceful breakfast, he went to the kitchen to do the dishes, and after he was done with them, he went back to his room and sat at his computer.

He boot up the computer and while he wait for it to boot, he opened the drawer and took out a book, or his journal to be precise. He titled the book, "The Orphan Journey Amidst The Dark Times."

There were reasons why he titled the journal in such a way. His parents died when he had just turned eighteen in a plane crash; it had been three years since then, and now he was twenty one years old.

Fortunately, his parents left him an apartment at a quite famous and well-known location in the country, so it was easy for him to access basic necessities. Also, his parents left him enough money for him to survive for a year and for his computer setup at that time.

Now, because of his successful career, he has managed to upgrade some parts and live leisurely without worry anymore. He opened his journal, went to the middle part of it, and wrote what was on his mind for today.

{ The year is 2034. It has been 9 months since I joined the army. Well, "join" doesn't sound right; I was "forced" to join because my country needs me. Not just me, of course, but all young men aged nineteen and above and a minimum of thirty years old.

All of this is because of war, a war that many have foreseen but which has been ignored by the world. It started in 2030, just after my parents' death, caused by foreigners and illegal immigrants who caused disturbances, such as disrespecting culture, stealing, destroying public facilities, and mocking the statues of respected people in Korea.

At first, the Koreans demanded that their government take action and deport them. But their voices weren't heard, so they were forced to take action themselves.

The Koreans were united, and they began sending threats to these foreigners and illegal immigrants to leave their country. Of course, the Koreans were very considerate and didn't engage in any physical contact with them yet.

Until one day, a foreigner "accidentally" pushed an old man into the path of an oncoming train, causing the old man to immediately pass away. This tragedy soon spread throughout the country like fire on paper, inciting the rage and wrath of the people of Korea.

As a result, the Koreans had had enough and began hunting these people without a care for the law. Chaos broke out within the country. The government was in a dilemma: would it protect its people or ignore its people and save these individuals instead?

Because of this dilemma, the chaos continued, causing pain and sorrow on both sides. The government tried its best to prevent this tragedy from being leaked to the world. However, because of social media, their efforts were in vain.

This went on for a month until the UN took notice, and before they took action, another chaos broke out in Japan with the same problem. The Japanese were fighting to defend their culture and honor.

This took the UN off guard, resulting in their postponement of the plan and the creation of another plan for the current situation. This delay lasted for about a week until the USA proposed a solution.

But fate spoke the other way; another country was hit, and it was France. Chaos broke out in Paris, and soon chaos spread throughout the country, with its own "people" fighting against one another.

Soon, other countries in Europe were hit with the same problem as well: illegal immigrants. Five months into the war, surprising news spread across the world: the USA faced the same fate as other countries.

With the number of uncontrolled illegal immigrants, the chaos that had already spread even before the war, its army that was deployed around the world helping other countries, and the people who were divided, the USA received the most damage out of all countries.

They even considered dropping a nuke on some of the states and cities, but they immediately discarded that idea.

Ultimately, the Pentagon released an ultimatum: "Any country that helps the USA will be freed of its debt. And any individuals outside of the USA who help will immediately become US citizens, including their families."

Because of this ultimatum, just within three months, the USA regained control of its country. However, the countries that decided to pour all their military power to help the USA faced a gruesome fate.

The first to fall was France, followed by a couple more countries in Europe, some countries in Asia, and England. Fortunately for England, the people who immigrated there were actually helping the country and defending it.

But the war is not over. And here I am, 9 months into the army. Well, not officially yet; that is why we were allowed to stay at home. But we were given tasks by the army, such as working out 4 hours a day and doing some basic army tasks.

Every week, we would be called out to the branch of the army in our area, and they would do some basic evaluations of us and check on our progress. If somebody was caught slacking off, they would immediately be punished. The punishment varied, from the easiest, such as doing 100 push-ups, to the hardest, which was running without stopping for 24 hours.

This is why I love my country even though I fucking hate it.

Mikael, 1-26-2034 }

Mikael closed his journal, put it back in the drawer, and shut it. He then went to the kitchen to grab some water and returned to his computer, focusing on the work he had to do today.
