Chapter 7 - Into the wilds (part 1)

----

The Verdant Wilds seemed to breathe around them, its thick canopy filtering only the dimmest light, casting an eerie green glow on the forest floor. The humidity clung to the skin of the academy members as they gathered in a wide clearing. The two groups stood silently, facing their respective leaders, their fates now diverging.

At the head of one contingent stood Prince Arlen, Crown Prince of the Light Empire. His presence alone seemed to radiate authority. Dressed in ornate, gleaming armor, Arlen's aura was a palpable thing—warm, intense, like standing too close to a fire. His deep connection to holy light magic was well-known across the empires, but here, among his peers, it was more than just power—it was leadership.

Beside him, Fiona, the Princess of the Fire Kingdom, radiated a calm heat. Her hands glowed with embers as she stretched her fingers, ready for the jungle that lay ahead. At her side was Lily, the gentle healer of the group, her mana flowing effortlessly as she stood in quiet meditation. Ronan, silent and stoic, towered near them, gripping the hilt of his sword—Blades of the Radiant Sun—a weapon known for cutting through both matter and magic.

The second group, led by Cody, looked poised and ready to head into the swamp. Unlike Arlen, Cody's leadership was quieter, subtler, but no less effective. His control over aura manipulation allowed him to see the threads of energy around him, and his ability to forge weapons from that aura made him a formidable fighter. He believed in his group, and more importantly, he believed in Jake. Jake, still reeling from the discovery of his split nature, was unsure of himself, but Cody's quiet confidence reassured him. Jake's water manipulation powers had grown stronger, but his full potential was yet to be realized.

As they prepared to part ways, Prince Arlen stepped forward, his voice steady but commanding. "We're splitting into two groups here. My team will head deeper into the jungle to retrieve the jaguar cub, a beast of immense potential. Cody, you and your team are to head to the Crimson Marshes. The weapon is somewhere within the heart of that swamp."

Cody nodded, adjusting the pack on his back. "We'll be fine," he said, locking eyes with Arlen. "Just make sure you return with that cub. We'll meet back here after the retrievals."

Arlen gave a slight nod. "Good luck."

With a final glance at his group, Cody turned and led his team towards the marsh. Sari, the beast tamer with the ability to communicate with animals, followed closely, her sharp eyes scanning the forest for threats. Baren, his wolf-like beast trailing at his heels, kept pace silently. Their mission was simple: find the ancient weapon hidden within the swamp and return before the forest itself turned against them.

As Arlen's group ventured deeper into the jungle, the atmosphere thickened. The trees grew taller, their roots twisting and coiling like serpents beneath the soil. The distant roars of monsters echoed through the trees, sending shivers down the spines of even the most seasoned warriors. Prince Arlen, however, walked with an unshakable confidence. His aura burned brighter as he tapped into his holy light magic, creating a protective field around the group.

They hadn't gone far before the ground began to rumble beneath their feet.

"Get ready," Ronan muttered, his hand gripping the hilt of his sword. Fiona's hands ignited, flames dancing in her palms. Lily prepared herself, mana swirling around her, ready to channel into healing or enhancement. But it was Arlen who stepped forward, his aura flaring as he raised his hand.

The Tier 5 monster that burst from the underbrush was a sight to behold. A massive beast, part lion, part serpent, with thick scales shimmering like polished metal. Its eyes gleamed with intelligence and malice as it locked onto the group, sensing their strength. Its roar shook the trees, sending birds screeching into the sky.

"Stay together," Arlen commanded.

The creature lunged, its serpentine tail snapping through the air like a whip. Arlen's aura flared as he raised his hand, a shield of light forming just in time to deflect the attack. Fiona's flames surged forward, spiraling into the air before crashing down onto the beast. It roared in pain as the fire scorched its scales, but it wasn't enough to bring it down.

"Jake!" Cody's voice echoed in the back of Jake's mind, though the young water manipulator was far away, trudging through the swamp with Cody's team. But somehow, Jake's fragmented memories seemed to respond to the battle raging in the jungle. His potential simmered just beneath the surface, waiting for the right moment to break free.

Back in the jungle, Arlen moved like lightning, his sword a blur as he struck at the creature's legs. The beast howled in fury, thrashing wildly as it tried to shake off its attackers. Fiona's flames danced around it, keeping it at bay, while Ronan stepped forward, his sword flashing with a golden light as he prepared to strike the final blow.

But it wasn't enough. The beast's tail snapped out again, faster than before, catching Ronan off-guard and sending him crashing into the underbrush. Lily gasped, her mana flaring as she rushed to his side, healing his wounds in an instant.

"Fiona, cover me!" Arlen shouted.

The princess nodded, her flames flaring brighter as she sent a massive wave of fire crashing into the creature, forcing it back. Arlen took the opportunity to leap forward, his sword glowing with divine light. With a powerful strike, he slashed through the beast's neck, severing its head in a single blow.

The jungle fell silent.

Arlen stood over the fallen creature, his chest heaving with exertion. "Is everyone alright?" he asked, turning to check on his team.

Lily nodded, still kneeling beside Ronan, who was slowly getting to his feet. "We're fine," she said, though her voice trembled slightly. "That thing was stronger than we expected."

Arlen wiped the sweat from his brow, his aura slowly fading as the adrenaline wore off. "We need to keep moving. The cub isn't far from here."

As the group gathered themselves and continued deeper into the jungle, the tension between them was palpable. The forest seemed to close in around them, the trees whispering secrets only they could hear. Arlen's aura flared once again, his holy light pushing back the shadows as they ventured further into the heart of the wilds, where the jaguar cub awaited.

At the same time, Cody and his team waded through the thick, murky waters of the Crimson Marshes. The swamp bubbled with dark energy, and the deeper they went, the more treacherous it became. Sari's connection with the animals around her was their only guide, and even then, the creatures of the swamp were not to be trusted. Cody's aura flickered as he scanned the area, his weapons forming and dissipating at the slightest hint of movement.

In the distance, a dark shape loomed—the weapon they sought was close. But the swamp had other plans for them.

Their fates were now tied to the wilds themselves, and the challenges ahead would test not only their strength but their very will to survive.
