Celeste held the picture of the ultrasound and felt her heart melt inside her. She was carrying a baby, growing inside her, with a beating heart that was loud and beautiful.
She couldn't stop looking at it. But ultimately, she had to slip it back into her purse because soon she'd arrive at Basement One, where Avond said he was staying at the moment.
Soon, Tiel's car drove closer to the edge of the sidewalk, but it didn't stop at the drop-off. Instead, he drove in.
Celeste looked over to him. "Are you coming with me?"
"Of course," Tiel answered as he put the car to a stop and turned off the engine. "I know you're a shark, but you're my wife and pregnant with my child. I can't let you go in there by yourself," he said, which made Celeste feel warm inside. It touched her that Tiel would go so far—that it seemed he genuinely cared for the baby.
Whether it was temporary excitement, she didn't know. But for now, she loved that he cared.
