Chapter 9 - CHAPTER 9: THE KING'S CHALLENGE

The courtyard of the royal palace buzzed with anticipation as king Alaric prepared to unveil his latest challenge for his children Lawrence leong Tovah and Gwyneth stood side by side their faces mix of excitement and apprehension.it was rare for the King to summon them all together like this they knew whatever awaits them was no ordinary test.

"Welcome,my children" king Alaric boomed his voice carrying across the courtyard. "Today I present to you a challenge,a test of skills, strength and cunning.

The victor shall earn not only my favor but also admiration of their peers.

Lawrence exchanged a glance with his siblings noting the tension in their expressions. Tovah in particular seemed on edge, her eyes flickering with jealousy as she glanced at Lawrence and Leong.

"As the eldest" king Alaric continued, Lawrence shall have the honor of leading the charge. But remember this is not a competition of brute force alone, strategy and wit will be your greatest allies".

With a wave of his hand ,king Alaric signaled for the challenge to begin. Lawrence stepped foward, his mind already racing with possibilities. He knew his siblings were formidable opponents, each possessing their own unique strengths and weaknesses.

As the contest unfolded, Lawrence found himself locked in a fierce duel with one of the competitors- a skilled swordman with a cunning gleam in the eyes. Their blades clashed with a resounding clang, the sound echoing off the stonewalls of the courtyard.

Leong, watching on sidelines cheering on his brother with a grin on his face, his red eyes shinning with pride. But as the duel intensified a sudden misstep sent Leong stumbling foward, direct into the path of the opponent's sword.

Time seemed to slow as Lawrence watched in horror, the blade slicing through the air with deadly precision. With a sickening thud,it struck Leong's side cutting through the fabric and flesh alike. A cry of pain left Leong's mouth as blood blossomed from the wound, staining his shirt crimson.

Without a second thought, Lawrence surged foward, his fury eclipsing all reason. He wrenched the sword from his opponent's grasp and drove deep into the man's heart, the force of his blow sending the man staggering backward, a look of shock on his face.

The courtyard fell silent as Lawrence stood over his fallen opponent, his chest heaving with exertion. Blood dripped from the sword in his hand mingling with the crimson stain on the ground.

"Lawrence!!" King Alaric voice boomed across the courtyard breaking the silence."what have you done?"

Lawrence turned to face his father his gaze unflinching "he hurt my brother" he said simply, his voice raw with emotions. "I couldn't let him get away with it".

King Alaric expression softened as he surveyed the scene before him. Leong lay crumpled on the ground , his face pale and drawn but alive.  Tovah and Gwyneth stood nearby, their eyes wide with shock.

"Take him to the healers" king Alaric commanded his voice heavy with authority. "And tend to Leong's wounds. And as for you, Lawrence,we shall discuss this further once the chaos has settled.

As Lawrence watched his brother being carried away, a wave of guilty washed over him. He had acted on instinct , driven by primal need to protect his family at any cost. But now as the reality of his actions set in , he couldn't help but wonder if he had gone too far.

The courtyard slowly emptied as Spectators dispersed, leaving Lawrence alone with his thoughts. He knew there would be consequences for his actions, but in that moment, all he could think about was his brother lying wounded and vulnerable, and the fierce determination burning within him to make things right.

******************************************

As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting the royal palace in shadows, Leong lay in the infirmary, his thoughts consumed by a single desire - to be free. The walls felt suffocating, closing in around him like vise, and he longed for the open air of the forest, the whisper of the wind through the trees.

With a determined glint in his eyes, Leong quickly slipped out of bed, careful not to alert others,he glanced out of the window noting the soft glow of torches lining the palace grounds. The night was alive with possibilities and he knew he couldn't resist his call.

Gently pushing open the door, Leong stepped in the hallway, his heart pounding with excitement. He moved quickly and silently, his bare feet padding the cool stone floor as he made his way toward the exit.

But just as he reached the door, a voice called out behind him, freezing him in his tracks.

"Leong? what are you doing here?"
