Chapter 10 - Chapter 10: The Legacy Awakens

Ye Wushang sat, transfixed, as the Azure Fox transformed before his startled eyes, becoming a fierce-feminine beauty who could hardly look at her. She crackled with power, old and wild. Her words fell with the crystal clearness of a mountain brook, touching something in him that lay deep, some primal, wordless place, his name for it.

He stared at the elders, bemused and looking to steady himself among familiar faces. But they were entranced also, features carved from a feeling of wonder, but with more than a little fear. For the transformation the Azure Fox had occurred under was manifestly not an ordinary one, even for the advanced adepts in the lore of their world.

"The power… within me?" Ye Wushang whispered, his voice barely audible. He was a warrior, after all, but he'd never been one to forget his own flaws. He could remember the ease with which his father wielded his power and the kind of awe both allies and enemies inspired. Compared to that towering legacy, Ye Wushang felt like a pale imitation, a flickering candle flame threatened by encroaching shadows.

The Azure Fox now stood before Abraham as a woman. In her eyes shone stars, starlight ancient and unspoken with hidden light. "You doubt, young master," she said, her voice all leaves whispering. "You see only the limitations of your mortal shell, the echoes of self-doubt whispered by those who seek to diminish your spirit."

She came closer, and in warmth, her presence was comforting enough to seem to drive back on him the chill fear that had settled over him. "The blood of the Ye Family runs strong in your veins, young master," she continued, her voice growing in power, "but it's the legacy of the Azure Fox that slumbers within you, a wellspring of untapped potential waiting to be unleashed."

She touched, her fingers reaching out, with the tips grazing his forehead. It sent a deep shiver through his body as, with the touch, she imbued him with a surge of electric energy, while images crowded his eyes, disjointed and confused : mists swirling, the clashing of blades, a symphony of roars under a starless night. He gasped, breaking free, as the visions began to recede, leaving a lingering sense of wonder and terror behind.

"What. what was that?" he stammered, his voice faltering with the last fading pulse of energy.

"A glimpse," the woman said, her eyes flooded with a sadness and a hope both of which glistened within them: "a glimpse into the past, into the wellspring of power that is your birthright. The path ahead will be fraught with challenges, Ye Wushang. But you are not alone. Ancient pacts bind us, and we will face what is to come in darkness together."

She redirected all her attention to the elderly ones. Her face was toughened. "Whispers and shadows are over. The Ye Family needs to be prepared. Train him, guide him to the breaking point, and make him push his endurance limit to the edge. The future of our world might depend on his shoulders."

Elder Zhao advanced, a new resolve igniting within his eyes. "Then let us start right away," he said steadily. "There is not much time to waste. The dark comes, and if the pact is to be fulfilled, Young Master Ye must be prepared to meet it."

A surge of determination welled up inside him. Ye Wushang did not know a thing about his full potential or the depths of what lay submerged, but he was resolute to find out. With Azure Fox—no, the woman who once was a fox—by his side and with help from the elders, he wouldn't fail.

"I will not let the shadows consume us," he declared strongly, his voice growing louder. "I will accept this legacy for whatever it holds in store. The Ye Family shall resist the darkness."

Thus, with such a declaration ringing out through the halls, the set of trials ahead is ready, as the fates start to weave their intricate patterns around Ye Wushang and the legacy that awaits him.
