Chapter 4 - Chapter 4

The figure in the doorway froze Dani in place. It was James, her son, standing there with a mix of concern and surprise etched on his face. His eyes darted between Dani and Colter, piecing together the scene before him.

"Dani, what's going on?" James asked, his voice tinged with worry.

Dani struggled to find the right words, her mind racing to explain everything to her son. "James, this is Colter," she began, her voice trembling slightly. "He's... he's your father."

James stared at Dani in disbelief, his eyes widening with shock. "My father?" he echoed, his voice barely above a whisper.

Colter shifted on the hospital bed, his gaze flickering between Dani and James. "James..." he murmured, uncertainty clouding his expression.

The air in the room grew heavy with unspoken questions and decades-old secrets. Dani could feel the weight of the past bearing down on her, threatening to unravel the fragile peace she had built for herself and her son.

"I didn't know how to tell you," Dani confessed, her voice barely audible. "I wanted to protect you from... from everything."

James took a hesitant step closer to Colter, his emotions raw and conflicted. "Why now?" he asked quietly, his eyes never leaving Colter's face.

Colter struggled to sit up, wincing in pain as he moved. "I didn't know," he began, his voice hoarse. "I didn't know about you."

James shook his head, his hands clenched at his sides. "How could you not know?" he demanded, his voice rising with emotion. "How could you leave us?"

The room fell into a tense silence, broken only by the steady hum of medical equipment and the distant sounds of the hospital waking up to another day. Dani felt tears welling in her eyes, emotions churning inside her like a storm.

"I thought I was doing what was best," Colter admitted quietly, his gaze haunted by regret. "I never meant to hurt you."

James looked away, struggling to process the flood of emotions crashing over him. "You should have been there," he whispered, his voice cracking with pain.

Colter reached out a hand, his fingers trembling slightly. "James, I..."

Before he could finish, a nurse entered the room, breaking the tense moment. "Excuse me," she said gently, addressing Dani and James. "Visiting hours are over. I'm afraid I'll have to ask you to leave."

Reluctantly, Dani and James exchanged a glance, silently communicating their shared turmoil. "We'll talk later," Dani promised, her voice filled with determination.

James nodded, his gaze lingering on Colter for a moment longer. "Yeah," he replied quietly. "Later."

As they left the room, Dani couldn't shake the feeling of uncertainty gnawing at her. The reunion with Colter had opened old wounds and stirred up buried emotions. Now, faced with the reality of James discovering the truth, she knew their lives would never be the same.

Outside the hospital room, James turned to Dani, his expression conflicted. "Why didn't you tell me?" he asked, his voice tinged with hurt.

Dani took a deep breath, gathering her thoughts. "I wanted to protect you," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. "I didn't want you to grow up feeling abandoned."

James looked away, struggling to contain his emotions. "I deserved to know," he replied quietly, his voice thick with unshed tears.

"I know," Dani murmured, reaching out to touch his arm gently. "I'm sorry."

They stood in silence for a moment, the weight of their shared pain hanging between them. Dani wished she could turn back time, erase the years of silence and secrets. But she knew she couldn't change the past—she could only face the future, uncertain as it was.

"We'll get through this," Dani said finally, her voice filled with quiet resolve. "Together."

James nodded, a flicker of hope crossing his face. "Yeah," he agreed softly. "Together."

As they walked down the hospital corridor, Dani couldn't help but feel a glimmer of hope amidst the turmoil. Maybe, just maybe, their fractured family could find a way to heal. But first, they would have to confront the truths that had been buried for so long.

The tension between Dani, James, and Colter lingered like a thick fog in the room. After the nurse's gentle reminder, Dani and James reluctantly left Colter's bedside, their hearts heavy with unresolved emotions.

As they walked down the hospital corridor, neither spoke. James kept glancing at Dani, his mind racing with questions and emotions he struggled to process. Dani, on the other hand, felt a mix of guilt and relief—guilt for keeping such a monumental secret from her son, and relief that the truth was finally out, even if it came in the most unexpected and painful way.

Outside the hospital, under the muted glow of streetlights, James finally broke the silence. "Why didn't you tell me?" His voice was strained, betraying the hurt he tried to mask.

Dani stopped walking and turned to face him, her own eyes filled with tears. "I was scared," she confessed, her voice barely above a whisper. "Scared of losing you, of making things worse."

James shook his head, his fists clenched at his sides. "You should have trusted me," he replied, his voice tinged with frustration. "I deserved to know the truth."

"I know," Dani murmured, reaching out to touch his arm gently. "I should have told you sooner. But I didn't know how."

They stood there in the cool night air, the sounds of the city fading into the background. James took a deep breath, trying to calm the storm of emotions inside him. "What now?" he asked, his voice more subdued.

Dani hesitated, searching for the right words. "We talk to Colter," she said finally. "We figure out where we go from here."

James nodded slowly, his expression still conflicted. "And Dad?" he asked, the word catching in his throat.

Dani's heart clenched at the mention of Colter. "I don't know," she admitted, her voice filled with uncertainty. "But we'll take it one step at a time."

They walked back to the car in silence, each lost in their own thoughts. Dani couldn't shake the feeling that their lives had been irrevocably changed by Colter's sudden reappearance. She glanced at James, seeing the weight of newfound knowledge settle on his shoulders.

As they drove home, Dani stole glances at James, her heart breaking for the pain he must be feeling. She wanted to protect him, shield him from the fallout of her past choices. But she knew that was no longer possible.

When they arrived home, James headed straight to his room without a word. Dani lingered in the hallway, her mind racing with unanswered questions. How would James cope with this revelation? Would Colter stay in their lives now, or disappear again as mysteriously as he had before?

Her thoughts were interrupted by the ringing of her phone. She glanced at the screen and saw an unfamiliar number. With a hesitant breath, she answered the call.

"Hello?" Dani said, her voice betraying her apprehension.

"Is this Dani?" a voice on the other end asked, slightly muffled by static.

"Yes, this is Dani," she replied, her heart pounding in her chest.

"I'm calling from the hospital," the voice continued, and Dani's stomach dropped.

"Wha

t is it?" she asked, her voice trembling.

"It's Colter," the voice said gravely.
