Chapter 66 - Chapter 66: The Ritual of Tides

**Chapter 66: The Ritual of Tides**

The journey north was relentless. Snow-capped mountains stretched before them, their jagged peaks shrouded in a perpetual storm. The wind howled, biting through layers of clothing and chilling them to the bone. Vira, Silas, and Malek pushed forward, determined to reach the ancient temple where the Ritual of Tides could be performed.

The Key of Ages, strapped securely to Vira's back, pulsed faintly, as if it sensed the nearing of its purpose. Vira could feel its weight not just physically but spiritually, as though the artifact itself was testing her resolve. Every time she glanced at it, she was reminded of the risks they faced.

"We're running out of time," Silas muttered, his eyes scanning the horizon. "The Abyss is spreading faster than we thought. Reports from the southern regions say entire villages have disappeared overnight."

Vira nodded, her face grim. "I know. But this temple… it's our only hope."

Malek, who had been walking ahead, suddenly stopped and raised a hand. "Something's wrong."

They came to a halt, scanning the snow-covered terrain. At first, nothing seemed out of place—just endless white in every direction. But then, from the swirling snow, dark figures began to emerge. Shadowy forms, indistinct and wreathed in the cold mist, drifted toward them.

"Abyssal spirits," Vira whispered, her heart sinking.

Silas drew his sword, its blade glowing faintly in the dim light. "We're surrounded."

**The Spirits' Attack**

Without warning, the spirits lunged. Their forms were ethereal, barely visible, but they moved with deadly precision. Silas swung his sword, cutting through one of the figures, but the blade passed through it as if striking air.

"Physical attacks won't work!" Vira shouted, quickly pulling out a talisman from her pouch. With a flick of her wrist, she activated it, and a barrier of light erupted around them, pushing back the spirits.

Malek, ever the pragmatist, reached into his pack and produced a handful of enchanted stones. "These should do the trick." He hurled one of the stones toward the nearest spirit, and it exploded in a burst of energy, disintegrating the figure instantly.

But the spirits kept coming, more and more of them materializing from the snowstorm. Vira's barrier was already beginning to weaken, the strain of maintaining it evident on her face.

"We can't hold them off forever," she said through gritted teeth. "We need to make a run for it."

Silas glanced at the distant mountains. "We won't make it before they overrun us."

Malek's eyes narrowed. "Then we fight."

**The Power of the Key**

As the battle raged on, Vira realized they were being pushed back toward a narrow ravine. The spirits were herding them, cutting off every escape route. She couldn't help but feel the presence of the Key of Ages growing stronger on her back, almost as if it was trying to communicate with her.

In a moment of clarity, Vira understood. The Key could help them, but using it here—outside of the ritual—was a risk she hadn't anticipated. Still, they had no choice. If they didn't act now, they would be overwhelmed.

"I'm going to use the Key!" she called out, already reaching for it.

Silas and Malek exchanged a quick glance but nodded. They trusted her.

Vira pulled the Key of Ages from her pack, feeling its energy course through her hands. The moment she activated its power, time itself seemed to slow. The swirling snow, the relentless spirits—all of it came to a crawl as the artifact's ancient magic took hold.

Focusing her mind, Vira directed the Key's power outward, creating a temporal distortion around them. The spirits, caught in the distortion, were frozen in place, their forms trapped in the flow of time.

"Now!" she shouted, her voice strained from the effort. "We need to move!"

With the spirits temporarily immobilized, the three of them sprinted toward the ravine, their movements faster than the eye could follow thanks to the Key's influence. The ground beneath their feet blurred as they raced through the frozen landscape.

But Vira knew this power wouldn't last long. The Key of Ages wasn't meant to be used like this—it was straining against its purpose, and already she could feel its energy waning. They had minutes, at most.

**The Temple of Tides**

At last, the temple came into view, its towering structure rising from the side of the mountain like a beacon of hope. Massive stone pillars lined the entrance, and ancient carvings decorated the walls, depicting scenes of time manipulation and the rituals of the Ancients.

The moment they crossed the threshold of the temple, the Key's power flickered and died. Time returned to its normal flow, and the spirits—now far behind them—vanished into the storm.

Panting heavily, Silas sheathed his sword and looked around. "We made it."

Vira collapsed to her knees, clutching the Key. "Barely."

Malek approached the center of the temple, where an enormous stone altar stood. "This is where the ritual will take place," he said, his voice echoing in the vast chamber. "We need to get started."

Vira struggled to her feet, her hands still trembling from the exertion. "The Ritual of Tides… it requires more than just the Key. We'll need to align the temple's ancient mechanisms with the flow of time itself."

Malek raised an eyebrow. "And how do we do that?"

Vira smiled faintly. "Leave that to me."

---

**The Final Preparation**

As Vira worked to decipher the temple's inscriptions, Silas and Malek prepared the area, lighting the sacred torches and ensuring that no other threats approached. The air inside the temple was thick with magic, and Vira could feel the weight of centuries of forgotten knowledge pressing down on her.

Finally, she found what she was looking for—a series of complex symbols etched into the floor around the altar. These symbols, when activated, would create a temporal vortex that would allow them to perform the Ritual of Tides.

"Get ready," Vira said, positioning the Key of Ages in the center of the altar. "Once we begin, there's no turning back."

Malek and Silas took their positions, weapons at the ready. They knew the Abyss wouldn't let them complete the ritual without a fight.

With a deep breath, Vira activated the symbols. The temple began to hum with energy, and a swirling vortex of time magic erupted around them, casting the chamber in a soft, golden light.

The Ritual of Tides had begun.
