Chapter 20 - Chapter 20: The Dark Descent

The glade trembled with a palpable tension, remnants of their confrontation with the grotesque figure lingering like a bad dream. Nathan and his friends stood together, hearts pounding, each breath a silent promise to one another. They had fought against darkness and emerged victorious, but Nathan could feel that something even more sinister awaited them.

"Where is Angel?" Nathan asked, panic creeping into his voice. "She was with us. We have to find her!"

"She's gone, Nathan," Aeloria said softly, her gaze scanning the shadows that lingered at the edges of the clearing. "We'll find her, I promise."

As they began to search the perimeter, Nathan felt a shiver race down his spine. The woods felt alive, pulsing with a malevolent energy that clung to the air. There was something watching them.

"We need to split up," Enoch suggested, his voice trembling. "We'll cover more ground that way."

"Are you sure?" Nathan replied, unease gnawing at him. "What if we encounter—"

"We have to!" Aeloria interrupted, her determination hardening her voice. "We'll regroup here in an hour. We can't let fear stop us."

Reluctantly, Nathan nodded, feeling the weight of responsibility pressing down on him. They agreed on directions, and one by one, they set off into the encroaching shadows, a sense of foreboding hanging heavy in the air.

Nathan took a deep breath and ventured deeper into the forest. Each step felt like a battle against the darkness, the trees looming over him like ancient sentinels. The whispers returned, a low murmur threading through the leaves, taunting him, urging him to turn back.

But he pressed on, driven by the hope of finding Angel.

Minutes turned into hours, the forest growing denser and darker. Nathan stumbled into a clearing choked with fog, the air thick with an otherworldly chill. "Angel!" he shouted, his voice breaking the silence, swallowed almost instantly by the mist.

Just then, he caught a glimpse of movement out of the corner of his eye. A shadow flickered among the trees, and without thinking, he chased after it. The deeper he went, the more twisted the forest became; gnarled branches twisted into grotesque shapes, and the cries of unseen creatures echoed through the gloom.

"Angel!" Nathan called again, desperation rising in his chest. "Where are you?"

As he turned a corner, he found himself face to face with a horrifying sight. A monstrous creature stood before him, its skin slick and dark, eyes glistening like obsidian. It had elongated limbs, each tipped with razor-sharp claws, and its mouth was filled with rows of jagged teeth that dripped with a viscous substance.

The creature snarled, stepping closer, and Nathan froze in terror. It moved with unnatural speed, lunging toward him. With reflexes honed from their struggles, Nathan sidestepped just in time, the creature's claws slicing through the air where he had just stood.

"Get away from me!" Nathan shouted, scrambling backward. He needed to escape, but the creature was relentless, closing in.

"Nathan!" A voice called from the distance, and he recognized it instantly—Angel's voice.

"Angel!" He shouted, adrenaline surging through him.

In that moment of distraction, the creature lunged again, but Nathan was ready this time. He ducked and rolled to the side, finding a fallen branch nearby. He seized it and swung it with all his strength, catching the beast across the face.

It howled, momentarily stunned, and Nathan seized the opportunity to sprint toward the sound of Angel's voice.

"Nathan! Help!" she cried, fear lacing her words.

Bursting through the trees, Nathan found himself in another clearing. There, bound to an ancient stone altar, was Angel, her eyes wide with terror. The fog swirled around her, and shadows writhed like living things, creeping closer.

"No!" Nathan shouted, racing toward her. He could see the dark figures lurking in the mist, waiting to pounce.

"Nathan, be careful!" Angel yelled, struggling against her bonds.

But it was too late. The shadows coalesced into the monstrous forms of the creatures he had faced before, each one more twisted and horrific than the last. Their eyes glinted with hunger, and their growls filled the air with an overwhelming dread.

"I'll get you out!" Nathan vowed, trying to find a way to release her.

He approached the altar, but as he reached for the bindings, the shadows lunged at him. He swung the branch again, striking one of the creatures, but it barely flinched.

"Nathan, look out!" Angel shouted as the other creature lunged at him.

Just then, Aeloria and Enoch burst into the clearing, their faces pale with fear.

"Nathan!" Aeloria called, her eyes widening at the scene before her. "We need to fight!"

"Help me get her free!" Nathan yelled, desperately trying to fend off the creatures. Enoch joined him, swinging wildly at the dark figures that advanced.

As they fought, Nathan felt a surge of hope. With their combined strength, they pushed back against the darkness. The creatures roared in fury, the sound echoing through the trees, as they fought to reclaim their prey.

But then, in the chaos, the shadows surged forward, overwhelming them. Nathan caught sight of Aeloria being dragged back into the fog, her screams piercing the air.

"No! Aeloria!" he cried, reaching for her, but she vanished into the darkness.

"We can't lose hope!" Enoch shouted, trying to pull Nathan away from the altar. "We need to regroup!"

"We can't leave her!" Nathan protested, feeling the weight of despair settling on his shoulders. "We need to save them!"

"We'll come back!" Enoch urged. "We need a plan!"

Just as Nathan turned to argue, the lead creature lunged at him again, snapping its jaws. Nathan ducked, but the sharp claws raked across his arm, pain igniting in his flesh.

"Run!" he screamed, his heart pounding with fear.

With a final glance at Angel, who was still struggling against her bonds, Nathan turned and sprinted into the woods, Enoch by his side. The darkness closed in behind them, the creatures howling in fury as they lost their prey.

They ran until their lungs burned, collapsing against the rough bark of a tree, panting in the silence that followed. Nathan pressed a hand to his wounded arm, feeling the warm blood seep through his fingers.

"We can't go back," Enoch gasped, glancing at Nathan with wild eyes. "We'll find a way to come back for them, I promise."

"I don't care what it takes," Nathan said, determination hardening his voice. "I will get Angel and Aeloria back."

As they sat in the shadow of the twisted trees, Nathan felt the darkness encroaching around them, a tangible threat that was all too real. Shadows danced at the edge of his vision, whispering secrets of despair, and he couldn't shake the feeling that they were being hunted.

But deep within him burned a flicker of hope—his friends were still alive, and he would not abandon them. They had faced darkness before, and they would do so again, together.

As they began to formulate a plan, Nathan knew they were heading down a dark path—one fraught with danger and despair. But it was a path they would walk, no matter the cost. The fate of his friends depended on it, and he would not falter.

Together, they would face the shadows, and Nathan vowed to reclaim the light.
