Chapter 15 - ## Chapter 16: An Unexpected Ally

---

The city of Mumbai seemed to pulse with life as Lila and Ethan returned to the heart of the city. The towering skyscrapers, the chaotic traffic, and the throngs of people moving like currents in a river felt strangely normal, despite the storm brewing around them. Lila's mind was far from the buzzing streets, though. Sameer's repeated calls rang ominously in her head, like a countdown to an inevitable confrontation.

Ethan, ever the calm in the storm, glanced over at her from the driver's seat. "You're quiet. Still thinking about Sameer?"

Lila turned her gaze out the window, watching the blur of city lights as they passed. "He's been two steps ahead of us the whole time. I don't know what he'll do next, but he's definitely not going to just let this go."

Ethan's grip on the steering wheel tightened. "He won't get the chance. We'll make sure of that."

But even Ethan couldn't hide the growing tension. They had the documents that tied Sameer to illegal activities, and yet they were no closer to bringing him down. Sameer was well-connected, wealthy, and more dangerous than ever. He wouldn't back down easily.

As they reached Ethan's apartment building, Lila couldn't shake the feeling that time was running out. They were playing a dangerous game with someone who always seemed to be one step ahead.

Once inside, Lila threw herself onto the couch, staring at the ceiling as her mind raced. Ethan joined her, tossing the bag with the box onto the coffee table before sitting down beside her. For a moment, neither of them spoke, the weight of their situation heavy in the room.

"Maybe we should reach out to the authorities now," Lila said finally, breaking the silence. "We have enough to implicate Sameer, don't we?"

Ethan hesitated, running a hand through his hair. "We do, but the problem is, Sameer has people on the inside. He could know about any move we make before we even make it. We need to be strategic."

Lila sighed, frustration bubbling up inside her. "Then what do we do? Just sit here and wait for him to make the next move?"

Ethan stood and began pacing, his eyes narrowing in thought. "No. We need someone on our side—someone with influence and power who can help us."

"Who?" Lila asked, sitting up. "Sameer's got half the city in his pocket. Who could we possibly trust?"

A knock at the door interrupted their conversation, startling both of them. Lila's heart raced as she and Ethan exchanged a wary glance. It was late, and no one knew they were here—except Sameer.

Ethan motioned for Lila to stay back as he cautiously approached the door. He peered through the peephole, his expression shifting from concern to confusion. "It's… someone I didn't expect."

Before Lila could ask who it was, Ethan opened the door to reveal a woman standing in the dimly lit hallway. She was tall, elegant, and exuded an air of confidence that immediately set her apart from anyone Lila had seen recently. Dressed in a crisp white blouse and tailored trousers, her sharp gaze swept over Ethan and Lila as if she was assessing every detail in a matter of seconds.

"Amira?" Ethan asked, clearly surprised.

The woman—Amira—stepped inside, her heels clicking against the floor as she crossed the threshold. "It's been a while, Ethan," she said smoothly, her voice rich and commanding. "We need to talk."

Lila stood, her curiosity piqued. "Who is this?"

Ethan hesitated before introducing her. "Lila, this is Amira. She… used to be a close associate of Sameer's. But she's no longer part of his world."

Amira's eyes flickered toward Lila, her expression cool but not unfriendly. "I heard what happened," she said, her tone businesslike. "Sameer's been acting reckless lately, and it's only a matter of time before it all catches up to him. That's why I'm here. I can help you bring him down."

Lila blinked, caught off guard by the woman's directness. "How do we know we can trust you? If you worked with Sameer, why would you want to help us now?"

Amira's lips curled into a small, knowing smile. "Because Sameer and I had a falling out. Let's just say he crossed a line, and I no longer have any loyalty to him. In fact, I want to see him fall just as much as you do."

Ethan crossed his arms, his skepticism clear. "What exactly do you have that can help us?"

Amira stepped closer, her eyes locking onto his. "I know Sameer's operations. I know his weak points, his network, and most importantly, I know the people he's betrayed. People who are willing to turn on him for the right price."

Lila felt a spark of hope, but it was quickly tempered by caution. "Why now? Why come to us?"

Amira's gaze softened just a fraction. "Because I'm tired of watching people like Sameer destroy lives. And because you're the only ones who have gotten this far without ending up buried six feet under. That's impressive. I admire that."

Ethan glanced at Lila, clearly weighing their options. "What's your plan?"

Amira's smile widened, her confidence unshakable. "We start by cutting off his resources. Sameer thrives because of his connections—politicians, business moguls, underworld figures. If we can expose the people backing him, his empire will start to crumble. But we have to move quickly. He's already suspicious, and once he realizes what we're up to, he'll come after all of us."

Lila's heart pounded as she considered the stakes. Amira's offer was tempting, but the risks were high. Sameer wasn't someone to be taken lightly, and if he found out they were working with one of his former associates, the consequences could be deadly.

But what choice did they have? Sameer was getting closer, and they couldn't keep running forever.

After a long pause, Ethan finally spoke. "We'll work with you. But if you betray us, Amira, you'll regret it."

Amira's smile never faltered. "I wouldn't dream of it. Now, let's get started."

---

The next few days were a whirlwind of careful planning, secret meetings, and gathering intel. Amira proved to be more valuable than they could have imagined, providing inside information on Sameer's financial dealings and corrupt allies. Together, they began the process of undermining his network, slowly cutting off the lifelines that kept his empire afloat.

But as they made progress, the tension only grew. Lila couldn't shake the feeling that Sameer was watching their every move, waiting for the right moment to strike back.

Then, just as they thought they were gaining ground, disaster struck.

One evening, as Lila and Ethan were reviewing the latest developments in their plan, Ethan's phone buzzed with a text message. His expression darkened as he read it.

"What is it?" Lila asked, sensing the shift in his mood.

Ethan's jaw clenched. "Sameer knows about Amira. He's making his move."

Lila's blood ran cold. "What do we do?"

Ethan looked up, his eyes filled with grim determination. "We fight back."

---

With Amira's help, they were starting to tear down Sameer's empire, but now the real battle was about to begin. Lila knew they were entering the most dangerous phase yet, and the stakes had never been higher.

Sameer was coming for them.

And this time, there was no turning back.
