Chapter 9 - Chapter 9: Magic’s First Steps

The dawn broke gently over Ravenwood, the soft light filtering through the trees as the village began to stir. Yuuto awoke feeling a strange mix of soreness and energy. His body ached from the intense staff training with Brann, but his mind was alive with new possibilities. The blacksmith had taught him the basics of combat with a staff, and more importantly, how to channel his mana through it. Now, it was time to take the next step: mastering magic.

After a quick breakfast at the tavern, Yuuto made his way to a secluded clearing on the outskirts of the village. This would be his training ground for the day. The clearing was peaceful, the morning air cool and crisp. Perfect for focusing on magic.

As he approached the center of the clearing, the Ascendant System chimed in.

[New Quest Unlocked: Master Basic Spells]

Objective: Practice and master your basic spells: Mana Bolt and Arcane Bind. Successfully cast both spells in sequence and maintain control over mana flow.

Reward: 20 EXP, Basic Spell: Barrier (Shield).

Failure: Inability to progress to more advanced spells.

Yuuto raised an eyebrow at the mention of the reward. Barrier, a defensive spell, could be invaluable in battle. It wasn't flashy like offensive magic, but it could save his life. The System clearly understood what he needed to survive, and he was grateful for its guidance.

He took a deep breath, feeling the flow of mana within him. The training with Brann had taught him how to direct mana through his staff, but now it was time to refine that skill and apply it directly to his magic. The first step was to master the spells he already had.

Mana Bolt

Mana Cost: 15

Effect: Fires a concentrated bolt of mana at a target.

Yuuto held out his hand and focused. He could feel the energy stirring within him, a warm, pulsing sensation that flowed like a river. The key was control. He had already practiced casting Mana Bolt, but now, he wanted to refine it—to make the spell more efficient and precise.

He visualized the bolt forming in his palm, a small, concentrated sphere of blue energy. The mana responded to his will, gathering in his hand, and with a flick of his wrist, he released the bolt. The blue orb shot forward, striking a nearby tree and causing the bark to splinter.

Yuuto watched the bolt disappear into the air, feeling the familiar drain of mana. He had cast the spell successfully, but he could still sense some inefficiency in the way the mana flowed. It's better than before, but there's room for improvement.

He cast the spell again, this time focusing on conserving as much mana as possible. He visualized the mana flowing smoothly through his body, only using what was necessary for the spell. The bolt fired once more, striking the same tree. It felt smoother, more controlled.

[Mana: 45/60]

"Not bad," Yuuto muttered to himself. "I'm getting the hang of it."

Next was the second spell in his arsenal—Arcane Bind.

Arcane Bind

Mana Cost: 20

Effect: Conjures magical chains to immobilize a target for a short duration.

This spell was a bit trickier. It wasn't just a matter of firing mana at a target; Arcane Bind required Yuuto to control the mana more intricately, shaping it into chains that could physically restrain an enemy. It was a spell that demanded focus and precision.

He held his staff in both hands, planting it firmly into the ground as he gathered mana. This time, instead of forming a simple bolt of energy, he visualized chains wrapping around a target. The mana responded to his thoughts, shifting and changing as he directed it. With a sharp motion, Yuuto thrust the staff forward.

Blue, glowing chains shot out from his staff, wrapping around a large stone in the clearing. The chains tightened, binding the stone in place as the mana pulsed through them. Yuuto grinned, satisfied with the result.

[Mana: 25/60]

But as he maintained the spell, he felt his control waver. The chains flickered for a moment, and the flow of mana grew unstable. Yuuto gritted his teeth, focusing harder on keeping the mana steady, but the drain on his energy was more intense than he expected. After a few more seconds, the chains dissolved into nothing, leaving him panting for breath.

I need to work on that. The spell had worked, but it had taken too much out of him. Maintaining control over Arcane Bind was more difficult than he anticipated.

Yuuto wiped the sweat from his brow and sat down on a nearby rock, taking a moment to recover. The two spells were the foundation of his magic, and mastering them would be crucial to his survival. But it wasn't enough to simply cast them—he needed to be able to use them efficiently, with as little mana drain as possible.

The System chimed again, providing a helpful reminder.

[Tip: Practice casting your spells in sequence to improve mana flow and control. Transitioning between spells smoothly will reduce overall mana consumption.]

Yuuto nodded to himself. The System had a point. In a real fight, he wouldn't have the luxury of focusing on just one spell at a time. He needed to learn how to transition between offensive and defensive magic without losing control.

He stood up again, this time ready to test himself with both Mana Bolt and Arcane Bind in rapid succession.

Holding the staff firmly in his hand, Yuuto focused on gathering mana. This time, he envisioned the flow of energy moving like a river, steady and unbroken. He began with Mana Bolt, firing the concentrated ball of energy toward the same tree he had hit earlier. The spell shot forward with more precision than before, the blue bolt crackling through the air.

As soon as the bolt hit the tree, Yuuto didn't wait. He immediately began channeling mana for Arcane Bind, directing the energy toward another nearby target—a broken branch lying on the ground. The chains appeared more quickly this time, wrapping around the branch and tightening without wavering.

[Mana: 15/60]

Yuuto grinned, feeling the rush of success. The transition between spells had been smoother, and the mana drain was less severe. It wasn't perfect, but it was progress.

"Alright, one more time," Yuuto muttered, determination in his voice.

He repeated the sequence, casting Mana Bolt followed by Arcane Bind in rapid succession. With each attempt, the spells felt more natural, more like extensions of his own will. The flow of mana became easier to control, and the drain on his reserves lessened with each successful cast.

By the time Yuuto had completed several cycles of practice, his mana was nearly depleted, but he felt a sense of accomplishment. He was beginning to understand how magic worked in Aetheria—how it flowed, how to control it, and how to use it in battle.

[Quest Complete: Master Basic Spells]

Reward: 20 EXP, Basic Spell: Barrier (Shield) unlocked.

A new notification flashed in his vision, and Yuuto opened the menu to check his latest spell.

[Spell Unlocked: Barrier (Shield)]

Mana Cost: 10

Effect: Creates a magical barrier that blocks incoming physical and magical attacks for a short duration.

Yuuto's grin widened. This was exactly what he needed—a defensive spell to complement his offensive and crowd-control abilities. Barrier would allow him to block incoming attacks, giving him time to regroup or counter with his other spells.

He felt a surge of excitement as he imagined the possibilities. With the combination of Mana Bolt, Arcane Bind, and now Barrier, he was becoming more versatile in combat. The more he trained, the more he felt himself growing stronger, more capable of handling the dangers that Aetheria would throw at him.

Exhausted but satisfied, Yuuto sat down in the grass, watching the sun climb higher into the sky. He had come a long way since waking up in this strange world, and with the Ascendant System guiding him, he was sure he could survive—even thrive.

But he also knew there was much more to learn. He had barely scratched the surface of Aetheria's mysteries, and the challenges ahead would only grow more difficult. His magic was improving, but there were countless spells and abilities he had yet to discover.

Still, as he looked down at his hands, faint traces of blue mana still crackling around his fingertips, Yuuto felt a deep sense of satisfaction. He was taking his first steps into the world of magic, and he was determined to master it.
