The street outside the mayor's office was abuzz with activity. Lady Elara's retinue, in its regal blue and white attire, stood as an imposing spectacle amidst the village's usual hustle. Over ten elite guards, noticeably taller and more robust than the average guard, flanked the two women. Their shining armor reflected the sunlight as they surveyed the area. Several magnificent horses, their coats glossy and well-groomed, stamped their hooves impatiently nearby. Among the group was a figure in robes of blue with white embroideries, his staff indicating his status — a mage from the kingdom. Their presence, grand and somewhat overwhelming, nudged the villagers to give way, many casting inquisitive glances as they did.
As Lynna walked beside Lady Elara, the sounds of the village center started to fade, replaced by the gentle rustling of trees and the distant hum of daily life. The road gradually led them to the outskirts, and Lady Elara, maybe feeling that Lynna was okay with open conversation, brought up the topic of security. "It's strange to me that a village like this doesn't have its own local guard. Is that true?"
Lynna, a bit taken aback by the directness of the question, nodded. "Yes, it is. As the official mage for the village, I've been responsible for its protection since my return a year ago."
A flicker of surprise crossed Lady Elara's face. "I've often heard," she mused, "that a mage of your stature is worth more than ten guards. Do you believe that to be true?"
Lynna offered a modest smile. "That's a sentiment echoed at the Academy. Magic is a powerful ally."
Lady Elara's eyes held a thoughtful gleam. Lady Elara's eyes sparkled thoughtfully. "Magic is powerful, and you're clearly talented, but one person can only do so much. As your village continues to grow, perhaps you should consider seeking additional help. A few trusted allies can be invaluable in watching your back."
Before Lynna could argue, the two arrived at their destination. Before them stood what was once a farm, now almost entirely transformed into a manor. The renovations were exquisite, blending the rustic charm of the countryside with a touch of aristocratic elegance.
Lynna gazed at the manor, visibly surprised. "I didn't know about this renovation"' she said, taking in the vast grounds and the elegantly updated buildings.
Lady Elara commented, "Prosperity brings many things — comfort, luxury, and often, envy. As your village grows richer, it becomes a more tempting prize. One needs to be wary and prepared," she advised, hinting at the underlying dangers of wealth and growth. "The kingdom is willing to assist, but your village must also take steps to organize and protect itself."
