Chapter 8 - The Lighthouse

Sleeping in the RV was hard, especially when rain began pouring down. Thankfully by daybreak the rain ended, and they reached the banks of Lake Ontario. Mick carefully stepped around the sleeping Fitz, Patten, and Lance as he made his way to the passenger seat.

"What's the matter Mr. Bellouve?" Enoch asked without taking his eyes off the road.

"Don't call me that," Mick grunted as Enoch nodded. "How much farther?"

"Well Mr. Mick," Enoch started. "The showers hampered traffic, however, that is where we are heading." Enoch pointed at a large lighthouse perched on a peninsula.

"We're hiding in a lighthouse?" Mick scoffed.

"There is more to that lighthouse than meets the eye," Enoch said as Mick glanced at the building. "You appear to be uncomfortable, would you care to explain?"

"Not really," Mick grunted, clearly Enoch didn't have the same emotional range that Aida had, but he wasn't about to spill his problems to a robot, especially not one he's only known for a short time.

"I have been told I am quite a good listener," Enoch said as Mick rolled his eyes.

"Look, last time a robot knew my business, I was trapped in a digital hellscape," Mick said as Enoch nodded.

"I am sorry," Enoch replied as they pulled into the long driveway.

"Are you sure we weren't followed?" Mick asked as Enoch pulled out a small tablet.

"I am not completely certain," Enoch handed Mick the tablet. "I did take the precaution of blocking satellite tracking for this RV. They may still be able to track us via camera drone."

"I'll get everyone up so we can head inside just in case," Mick sighed.

"Then I will go ahead and unlock the elevator," Enoch said as Mick nodded.

Everyone groggily stumbled about as they walked over to the large basement like door which lead to an large elevator. Enoch pressed a few buttons as the elevator jerked, then began its decent.

"Just how deep does this thing go?" Lance asked.

"Unknown," Enoch stated.

"When was it built?" Patten asked.

"Unknown," Enoch repeated.

"How did you find it?" Mick asked as Enoch stated quiet for a few moments.

"I found it by chance in the late nineties while looking for a place to stay after the turn of your earth century," Enoch replied.

The elevator finally stopped as Robin and Polly stepped out first with Robin reaching for the notebook for n her mother's hands.

"This looks like SHIELD, but I'm not sure," Patten remarked looking around at the steel and concrete bunker.

"This wasn't in Fury's box," Mick remarked as Patten chuckled.

"As hard as it may be to believe, Fury wasn't the first Director," Patten smirked. "Peggy Carter was, Robert Keller, Nick Fury, now Coulson."

"Leave it to you for the history lesson," Mick teased.

"But why would Carter or Keller build this place then abandon it?" Fitz asked as Lance shook his head.

"I don't know, but I'll see if I can find anything about it. Sure would've been nice to have this three years ago during the Hydra uprising," Patten sighed.

"Knowing our luck, Ward or Garrett would've trapped us in here," Mick huffed.

"Perhaps it would be best to not dwell on the could haves," Fitz looked at the antiquated computer systems. "We can use it now, but we'll need serious upgrades."

"This tech looks late seventies early eighties," Patten glanced over a few of the rather small monitors with large, desk like, computers. "Primitive, but I'm sure we can at least get some things rolling."

"Would you like to see the room that your friends were in?" Enoch returned from getting Robin and Polly settled in.

Mick and Fitz shared a looked that begged the question, should they, before nodding to each other. "Lead the way," Mick said feeling slightly less nervous while Fitz seemed more determined than ever.

The path lead down a long corridor, to another elevator which went deeper into the bunker. Enoch the led them into a large storage like area full of empty racks with a heavy steel looking door across the way. Once inside they stood face to face with a six foot tall, white monolith with three red stripes across the top. Fitz walked over toward the rock, rubbing his hand across it in a terribly familiar way. Mick remembered clearly the struggle Fitz faced when the black monolith warped Jemma across space two years ago, now he was faced once again by this horrible wall between them.

"Any idea as to where we start?" Mick asked as he touched the cold rock wishing it would liquify and consume them like it had done to the others in Enoch's footage.

"Unfortunately it won't be as simple as having Daisy quake it," Fitz groaned.

"Think we could replicate her powers?" Mick asked as Fitz shook his head.

"Too risky," Fitz sighed. "If we accidentally destroy the thing, then they may never be able to return."

"So we're just stuck then?" Mick was getting angry.

"Maybe if we can get Robin to focus, we can figure out when it's supposed to open again?" Fit seemed uneasy about his conclusion.

"That may have already happened," Enoch stated as he revealed a folded paper from his pocket. The image was of two girls, one darker hair, almost like Daisy's, one with lighter like Jemma's surrounded by two black clad grey creatures. The girl that looked like Daisy was on the ground covered in red with X's on her eyes, while the one that looked like Jemma was bound with chains. The top of the paper had a strange symbol on it. "It would appear you were left here to find a way to save them."

"But how are we supposed to do that?" Mick barked.

"Neither of us have the abilities to force this thing open!" Fitz growled.

"Perhaps I may offer a solution?" Enoch suggested.

"I thought you weren't supposed to interfere with mankind's progress due to your directives?" Fitz asked as Mick stared curiously.

"Unless it diverts a catastrophic event," Enoch stated plainly. "I believe, from looking at these prophecies, rescuing your friends may do just that."

"So what's your plan?" Mick asked.

"My ship may still have a working cryogenic capsule but, that would leave one of you in waiting, ultimately experiencing the end of the world while the other reaches the target year to attempt to learn of how to return to the past and alter it," Enoch stated.

Mick and Fitz stared at each other, both eager to see how the other felt, then Mick looked down first. "Let's save that for Plan B. Maybe if we could get our hands on Zephyr One, we could do some experiments without shattering the monolith," Fitz said as Mick seemed to perk up. "Then at least I'd have part of my lab equipment."

"Sounds like a good place to start to me," Mick shrugged. "But where would Zephyr One be?"

"I'd bet Hale took it," Fitz smirked.

"Really?" Mick frowned. "We just got off the radar and you want to go robbing the people who put us on the Most Wanted list?"

"Do you want to bring Daisy back?" Fitz asked as Mick simply glared.

"Like you even have to ask," Mick huffed. "But if we do this, we're calling in backup."
