"We'll go look for her after you brush your teeth, Princess," I say, finishing my search through Reese's cabinet for her toothbrush case. She's perched on the bed, legs swinging, watching me as if I'm a puzzle she's trying to solve.
I got up from bed, unable to find Elspeth. Just as I decided to go out looking for her, Reese woke up, repeatedly asking where she had gone. I'm trying to stay sane; she must have stepped out—there's no way she could have been abducted right under my watch.
Then, footsteps near the door. Relief floods through me as Elspeth steps in.
"Good morning, Mummy," Reese calls out, her small voice brightening the room. I turn, and there she is—Elspeth, coffee in hand, looking as calm as ever.
