Soul Binding
"Soul binding?" Knight echoed.
"Yes, there needs to be a binding. Otherwise, the magic network can't verify if the person logging in is truly the account owner," he explained.
Makarov pondered for a moment before responding, "The Internet is your magic, and I can't quite grasp its full principles."
While Makarov understood the concept of magical binding—he had studied the magic rings—the workings of the Internet were foreign to him. To him, the magic behind it was like a black box.
"So, when you ask if soul binding is possible... I can't say. You'll need to find that answer on your own." Makarov patted his back and stood up. "Come with me; I'll take you to the second floor. I can't help you with everything, but I can at least teach you about soul magic."
The old man set down his drink and began walking up the stairs.
Knight followed, casting a glance at Mirajane. "I thought non-S-Class members weren't allowed on the second floor?"
Mirajane smiled softly but added seriously, "Knight, you're an exception, but please don't mess with any S-Class commissions like last time. You really worried us!"
Knight chuckled. "Don't worry, that won't happen again."
With his newfound wealth, he had no desire to take on work. All he wanted was to enjoy his days with minimal effort.
Once Mirajane had his word, her smile returned.
On the second floor, Makarov led him into the guild's library. "These are some valuable magic books," he said, guiding Knight to a particular shelf. He stretched for a book on the top shelf but, being too short, couldn't reach it—even after jumping.
Watching this, Knight found the situation amusing but suppressed his laughter.
"President, let me help with that," Knight offered, barely holding back a grin.
Makarov's face flushed red as he stubbornly flew up, grabbing five thick books from the shelf. Handing them over, he said, "These are about soul magic. Master them, and you'll be ready to understand the basics."
"Thanks, President," Knight said, gazing at the hefty volumes.
He read the titles aloud:
Soul, Magic, and MysticismThe Secret of the SoulA Detailed Explanation of Soul Magic BasicsThe Encyclopedia of Magic: Soul Magic EditionThe Origin of Life: Soul Power
"Take your time reading up here; it's quieter than downstairs," Makarov said with a smile. "And don't even think about touching those S-Class commissions," he added with a teasing grin.
Nodding, Knight settled into the second-floor tea room. From his vantage point, the board for S-Class commissions was visible, but he had no interest in it.
As he settled in, Makarov reassured him, "If you have any questions, feel free to ask." The old man then descended the stairs, back to his drink.
Alone on the second floor, Knight pulled out a magical artifact he had recently bought—Wind Song's Glasses. These glasses, capable of speeding up reading, would help him breeze through the books.
In under two hours, Knight had finished the first book. He removed the glasses, allowing the knowledge to settle in.
"The glasses work great, but some of the concepts were rushed. I should re-read parts for better understanding," he muttered to himself, diving back in for more detailed study.
Time flew by, and Knight didn't notice how late it was until Mirajane appeared on the second floor.
"Still reading? Everyone's gone home," she said with a smile.
Knight looked up in surprise. "It's that late already?" He had been so absorbed in learning about magic—something he hadn't experienced since cramming for high school exams.
"Yeah, and you're pretty amazing to stay focused for this long," Mirajane replied, holding a cleaning rag.
Knight realized she was cleaning up the guild after everyone had left. She was the first to arrive in the mornings and the last to leave at night, even cooking breakfast for him on some days.
"Let me help," Knight offered.
"Huh? I can manage on my own—" she began, but Knight had already taken the rag from her hand with a smile.
"In return, treat me to dinner next time."
"Don't I always treat you to dinner?" she laughed.
"I mean somewhere outside," Knight clarified.
Mirajane raised an eyebrow playfully. "What, my cooking isn't good enough?"
Knight chuckled, "Of course it is. How about I treat you this time?"
Mirajane's eyes sparkled. "Well, it's not every day that you offer to treat someone."
The two of them then spent some time cleaning the guild together while chatting.
After finishing, Knight escorted her back to the girls' dormitory. He was curious about what the dorms looked like but, as expected, there was a strict dormitory manager guarding the place.
"Good night, Knight," she said.
"Good night, Mira. See you tomorrow," he replied before heading back to his apartment.
When he got home, he noticed the guild chat was buzzing.
[Fairy Tail Gossip Group Chat]:
Levy: [Breaking news, everyone! Major news!]
Jet: [What's happening, Levy?]
Troy: [Spill the details!]
Levy: [I saw Knight walk Mirajane home late at night! Must've been a date!]
Happy: [There's something fishy going on~]
Arzak: [Should we @Mirajane?]
Warren: [Our poster girl in a relationship? No way!]
Reedus: [Called it! Proud.jpg]
Gray: [What? Knight and Mira getting hitched?]
Kana: [Levy, did they kiss? Did they kiss?!]
Levy: [It was too dark, but I don't think so.]
Kana: [Mira's slacking! If it were me, I'd have kissed him for sure!]
Kana: [@Knight, don't cry, pat-pat.jpg. Mira's just shy!]
Seeing the chaos in the chat, Knight groaned. They loved their gossip a little too much, and he wasn't about to get involved in the group tonight.
Shutting off the chat, he returned to his studies.
Meanwhile, back in the girls' dormitory, Mirajane soaked in the bath, reading the chat with a blush. Though she was just lurking, she couldn't help but feel embarrassed by the teasing comments.
The gossip didn't affect Knight's daily routine. Over the next three days, with the help of his glasses, he diligently finished all five soul magic books. He didn't just read them; he fully understood the content, absorbing the intricate knowledge within each one.
With the foundational knowledge in soul magic now firmly under his belt, Knight began formulating how to implement "soul binding" for his next system task.
Additionally, he was seeing a rapid increase in users. As the guild masters distributed their purchased magic rings, the number of registered users on the Internet surged past 5,000!
His magical power grew once again.
