"Finally, I won!"
"Congratulations," Knight said with a smile.
The sky outside had begun to darken. After Knight generously transferred 1,000 points to Mirajane's account with his developer privileges, she finally achieved her first victory in the Mahjong game. He didn't charge her anything—after all, the Internet system was still in its infancy. It was too early to start making a profit from it.
Mirajane, excited by her win, decided to treat Knight to dinner as a token of gratitude.
"Oh no… it's already so late?" she noticed, glancing out the window with a touch of guilt. "Knight, I'm so sorry to have kept you for so long."
Knight shook his head. "Don't worry about it. I'm glad you enjoyed my magic. And please, no need for formalities. Just call me Knight."
Mirajane smiled warmly and nodded. "Alright then, Knight. Welcome to Fairy Tail!"
In this world, magic is generally divided into two categories: Possession Magic and Ability Magic. Knight's magic, Internet Magic, fell into the possession category, requiring magical items to activate. The other category, Ability Magic, involved wizards developing and harnessing their internal magic. Mirajane had a feeling that Knight's new possession magic could bring about significant changes to the magical world.
She took out a guild seal and asked, "Where would you like the Fairy Tail emblem to go?"
"The back of my hand," Knight said, removing his glove to show her his left hand. "And can the color be blue?"
"Of course!" Mirajane smiled as she pressed the magic seal to the back of his hand, engraving the Fairy Tail emblem in blue.
With the sky now dark, Knight excused himself. "It's getting late, so I'll head out."
"Take care, Knight."
Knight rented an apartment near the guild for 70,000 J per month, which was quite affordable, considering it came with hot water and basic furniture. Once home, he filled the bathtub with steaming water, eager to check the system.
[Task: Recruit one Internet user.]
[Reward: Paramecia-type Tremor-Tremor Fruit.]
[Task completed!]
Would you like to claim the reward?
Yes.
[Detected: This is not the One Piece world. Reward is being converted...]
[Paramecia-type Tremor-Tremor Fruit → Ability-type Tremor-Tremor Magic!]
A torrent of magic knowledge surged through Knight's mind. In an instant, he mastered a new magic. Standing beside the bathtub, he closed his eyes to absorb it all. After a long pause, he opened them, lifting his right hand to see a faint white aura enveloping his fist.
"To adapt to this world's rules, the devil fruit has transformed into magic…" Knight muttered, amused. "The only difference is that devil fruit powers consume physical energy, while magic consumes magic power."
A grin spread across his face—he wouldn't run out of magic power anytime soon.
While his current magic power wasn't extraordinary, his Internet Magic had a unique advantage. Every Internet user consumed a small portion of magic when using the Internet, 99% of which maintained the system itself. The remaining 1% funneled into Knight, gradually increasing his magic reserves.
[Host: Knight ]
[Age: 20]
[Race: Human]
[Magic Power: ★☆]
[Magic: Internet, Tremor]
Knight now possessed two types of magic—Internet (possession) and Tremor (ability). While Internet Magic had no combat applications yet, Tremor Magic was incredibly powerful, comparable to super magic. With it, Knight could easily trigger earthquakes, tsunamis, and other natural disasters, enough to level towns.
As he settled into the bathtub, a new task appeared on the system:
[Task: Maintain 80 active users for three consecutive days, with each user spending an average of 2 hours online.]
[Reward: 1,000 rings.]
"Eighty active users and two hours per day? That should be easy enough," Knight mused. Fairy Tail had hundreds of members, so he only needed to distribute enough rings. However, he currently had only 100 rings, including his own developer ring.
He would need 80% of his users to stay active for two hours every day for three days straight. Mirajane's enthusiasm gave him confidence that this task wouldn't be a problem.
Curious about her activity, Knight opened the Internet and searched for Mirajane's ID, "Departing Traveler."
Online (playing Mahjong).
Knight chuckled to himself. This task was already looking like a guaranteed success.
He clicked to send a friend request.
Meanwhile, in the girls' dormitory of Fairy Tail, Mirajane—now comfortably settled in the bath—was playing Mahjong. Compared to Knight's modest 70,000 J apartment, the dormitory was 100,000 J per month, offering superior living conditions. Mirajane could easily afford it as a former S-class wizard.
As she played, a notification appeared in the upper right corner of the interface.
"Huh?"
Mirajane tapped the notification.
[User "Sigma Man" has added you as a friend. Do you accept?]
[Message: I'm Knight.]
"'Sigma Man?' That's Knight's nickname?" Mirajane pondered, amused. "I wonder what Sigma means…"
After accepting his request, a chat window opened.
Sigma Man: "Still playing Mahjong?"
Departing Traveler: "How do you know?!"
Departing Traveler: "Wait… does your magic have a surveillance feature?!"
Her face flushed red. Was she being watched while in the bath?
Mirajane quickly sank into the bubbles, hiding most of her face under the water.
Sigma Man: "No, no! Friends can just see if you're online and what you're doing."
"Oh, I see…" Mirajane sighed in relief, fumbling through the interface until she found the friend list. Sure enough, she could see Knight's status: Sigma Man – Online (idle).
She typed a quick apology.
Departing Traveler: "Sorry, I misunderstood. Please forgive me."
Sigma Man: "I'm heartbroken… You doubted my integrity!"
Departing Traveler: "I'm really sorry, Knight. How can I make it up to you?"
Sigma Man: "... Buy me two meals? Honestly, I just rented a place and I'm broke."
Mirajane giggled, typing her reply.
Departing Traveler: "Alright, I'll treat you to a meal! I'll also keep an eye out for commissions in the guild to help you."
Sigma Man: "Thanks, poster girl."
The mention of "poster girl" brought a warm smile to Mirajane's face. It was a familiar nickname, but coming through the Internet, it felt different.
After a few more exchanges, Knight said goodnight and logged off. Mirajane, still feeling restless, opened one of the other games Knight had recommended: Happy Landlord.
She played deep into the night.
Knight didn't go to sleep right away, though. After drying off and putting on his robe, he sat at his desk, opening the magic programming interface.
"Coding in another world…" he muttered with a grin. "Some things never change."
His programming knowledge from his previous life translated easily to this magical system, and with a few adjustments, he started developing a new feature: The Library.
"Users will be able to scan and upload magical books," Knight mused, "making it easier for everyone to learn new spells."
It was well into the early morning when he finally went to bed.
The next day, Knight woke up around noon, skipped breakfast, and headed straight for the guild.
With no money left for food, it was time to find Mirajane and cash in on that promised meal.
