After a Warlock reaches level three, they must choose one of three pacts. Each represents a different path of development:
Pact of the Blade focuses on wielding weapons, primarily relying on physical output with magic as a supplementary means.
Pact of the Chain involves nurturing a powerful Magical Familiar, with the Warlock and the Familiar working together to unleash various abilities.
Pact of the Tome is the path of supportive casting; with it, Hawthorne would no longer need to spend vast amounts of time memorizing spells, as he could write them in his Grimoire and use them freely—though it would still cost mana to do so.
Moreover, the human mind has its limits. Even extremely talented individuals cannot retain too many spells at once and may eventually have to choose to forget some spells to free up mental capacity for new ones.
Having such a Pact Grimoire would naturally increase the overall number of spells a spellcaster could master.
Additionally, there was actually a fourth option, the "Pact of the Glyph," which served the role of supporting and protecting teammates, but Hawthorne disregarded that path.
"I have a cheat; I don't want to be just a support taking damage for my teammates!"
In any case, this was a crucial choice a Warlock had to make at level three. He had to select one of them to learn many more powerful Eldritch Invocations at higher levels, thereby continuing to enhance his strength.
Heidi's little hand returned to his lower body, her agile fingers playfully touching him as she suggested, "I think both Chain and Tome are good options? If you choose the former, Master can treat us as Magical Familiars and work in better harmony; if you choose the latter, Master can cast spells with peace of mind while we stand in front to protect you."
Hawthorne nodded gently; he indeed had a leaning toward this. The most painful thing for a Warlock who chose the Pact of the Chain was not being able to find a capable Magical Familiar, but he had a group of powerful witches, resolving that issue from the start.
The Pact of the Tome had its own advantages. Generally, Warlocks had a short mana pool, so even if they learned a vast array of spells, they rarely had the opportunity to use many in a single battle.
Hawthorne's mana pool, however, was so long that it could fully replenish in an hour, so choosing the Pact of the Tome would definitely allow him to unleash far greater power than a typical Warlock.
That was his thought, while Yuta pondered for a moment before saying, "I would actually recommend the Pact of the Blade, for two reasons."
"First, I myself am skilled at using the Keen Blade in combat. If Master chooses the Pact of the Blade, I can share all my experience with you."
Hawthorne nodded; this was indeed true. He could easily draft a new pact that would allow Yuta and Heidi to become his overlords, sharing their strength with him—just as the two of them served him.
Normally, having multiple overlords wouldn't occur since, essentially, the overlord is the owner while the Warlock is the worker. It's typically one owner with a bunch of employees; the reverse just doesn't make sense.
But he and the two witches were mutually willing, so he could naturally ignore this convention.
"Second, it seems that those two pacts can rapidly enhance Master's strength, but what about in the long run?" Yuta continued, "Especially if we encounter an anti-magic field?"
Hawthorne was taken aback and then nodded slightly, "That is indeed true."
An anti-magic field is an eighth-tier spell, the nemesis of all magic, and the most hated spell among all spellcasters.
Without it, spellcasters could freely summon storms and destroy the world at will; with it, those proud and noble wizards would have to fight like mere warrior scrubs.
Although the eighth-tier spell requires a level fifteen spellcaster to use, and few people could master the anti-magic field spell, it certainly exists.
Upon thinking about this, Hawthorne couldn't help but want to give himself a slap.
Damn it, you're still a player! It's only been a month since your transmigration, and after seeing the actual effects of spells and the esteemed status of spellcasters a few times, you've forgotten that late-game pure spellcasters can become crippled?
He cursed himself internally and then remembered something, turning to ask, "Heidi, how much Magic Power can you supply me with like this, uh, without affecting your own combat ability? What level would it allow me to reach?"
Hearing this, Heidi's expression became troubled: "If that's the case... I'm sorry, Master, my Magic Power is limited; I can probably only supply you to become a level five spellcaster, able to cast third-tier spells."
Indeed.
Hawthorne sighed quietly. In the game's background, the overlords signed by Warlocks were all powerful figures capable of influencing the world, so leveling up to twenty and mastering ninth-tier spells was not an issue.
As for Heidi… she was just a witch who hadn't even mastered a fifth-tier spell. Although she was quite powerful in Liberl Port, she still fell short on the world stage.
"Given that, the benefits of Pact of the Tome aren't that significant after all," he continued. "So, for the sake of well-rounded development, I'll choose the Pact of the Blade!"
After saying this, he extended his finger and gently tapped on the "level" section of the system.
Buzz—
A hazy white light emerged, and new knowledge and power surged into his mind. Heidi also sensed her power being drawn away, and she obediently dove into the water, opening her small mouth to take in his already erect massive object, allowing the flow of power between the two to become even smoother.
"Ah…"
Hawthorne closed his eyes slightly, feeling Heidi's agile tongue dancing on the lower half of his body. Four images appeared in his mind: a sword, a chain, a book, and an amulet.
Without hesitation, he chose the sword and began to call out to Yuta's consciousness through his mind.
In reality, Yuta, who was resting her head on his lap, grew increasingly flushed, but eventually lowered her head and actively kissed his lips, extending her tongue to seek his.
In this state of ecstasy,
he gained some insight, and his level rose to three.
After releasing himself in Heidi's mouth, Hawthorne contentedly wrapped his arms around the two girls and opened his system to check the upgrades he had obtained from this level up.
Pact of the Blade: At any moment, you can magically create a Pact weapon. The Pact weapon is in tune with your mind, allowing you to use it as flexibly as your own fingers. If you are more than a meter away from it for over a minute, the Pact is broken, and the weapon automatically disappears. You can also dissolve the Pact with a single thought.
You can spend an hour transforming a magic weapon you possess into your Pact weapon. If you do this, you can merge that weapon with your body. You can dissolve the Pact at any time; if you do so while the weapon is within your body, it will be expelled from you.
You can only have one Pact weapon at a time.
That's all there is to the "Pact of the Blade."
Hawthorne then raised his hand, and immediately, accompanied by twinkling starlight, a regular longsword appeared in his grasp. As his thoughts changed, the sword shattered into starlight and then coalesced into a warhammer.
He nodded slightly and then dismissed the weapon. The description of the Pact of the Blade was quite similar to that in the game, and for now, this Pact weapon wouldn't provide him with much combat power; he needed to master more Eldritch Invocations and acquire powerful weapons to maximize its effectiveness.
The biggest boost to his combat capability from leveling up to three was his Mana!
Remaining Mana: 14/14
Previously, at level two, he had only a maximum Mana of six points; leveling up increased it almost to double!
Moreover, meditating for an hour would fully replenish it!
This was the greatest enhancement to his combat capabilities!
In addition, after reaching level three, he also gained the ability to cast second-tier spells and automatically learned a second-tier spell, "Create Wind."
This spell, well, it could blow people away, disperse toxic gas, and extinguish open flames...
So it couldn't be said to be completely useless, but one could also say its usefulness was very limited.
Hawthorne couldn't help but sigh quietly, then consoled himself: it's okay, spells can still be learned. A proper Warlock at level three only gets six Mana points; I've already gained a lot.
After this self-comforting session, he looked at his Mana points and felt ambitious.
"Heidi, Yuta," he said, "keep an eye on the movements of the other witches. Once Selene leaves this time, we'll immediately start working on purifying the Fire Witch and the Insect Plague Witch!"
