Chapter 7 - The throne

Three days ago - the dukedom of Zimmerman

Dionysus woke up groggy to the sound of knocking on his door "Come in!" He shouted, slightly irritated, he had told his servants to not knock on his door and to just wait until he was awake, but they never listened. As he sat up his servant came in, requesting him to join the rest of his family at dinner. Dionysus groaned and kicked his servant out of the room so he could get dressed. Most nobles didn't like getting dressed without help, but on the contrary he didn't like getting dressed with help, it made him feel like a baby or something. He decided on a white, flowy shirt with frills on the sleeves and a lace up collar with some black straight legged dress pants. Despite being a guy he liked frills a lot, he just thought that they looked nice. He threw on some alligator skin dress shoes that were dyed black. He made his way downstairs to his dining room for the luncheon, he slept in really late, so lunch was his first meal of the day. He sat down at his chair, right next to his father at the head of the table. He had five siblings, he was the oldest sibling. He had three sisters and two brothers. His father had taken his first bite of food, inviting everyone else to do the same.

As Dionysus was almost finished with his plate of food, his father suddenly inquired "have you thought about your future, son?" Dionysus stopped the fork right at his mouth and said quietly "no..I haven't, father" he didn't like being the center of attention, but the question his father just asked had everyone sitting at the table looking at him. He pursed his lips, waiting for what his father was going to say next. He really didn't , get why his father pressed him so much on this matter, he knew his father cared about him though. Despite him being the son of a whore, his whole family accepted him and treated him as a pure blooded noble. His father softly sighed instead of saying anything.

The reason Dionysus was not preparing to take the throne was because of his siblings. He was the son of a whore, despite being the oldest he couldn't take the throne of the dukedom because he wasn't fully a noble. On the other hand, his younger brother, dale, could take the throne because he met all the requirements. Male, fully noble, oldest (of everyone but Dionysus), and strong willed. He didn't hate his brother or resent him for it, in fact he congratulated him. He was never keen on taking control of the dukedom, as he couldn't handle the responsibility.

When he was younger he told his father that he wanted to help people, that he wanted to be a doctor. Today Dionysus turned 20 and still didn't have his future planned out. "I heard that your uncle's school for medicine is taking in new students.." his father awkwardly made a suggestion "you're a little late for the tests, but we can try to persuade your uncle to let you take the test a little late if you want..?" Dionysus looked at him nervously. "mhm" Dionysus tentatively agreed to it. He never really liked to use his relations to get special treatment, but there were definitely times when he did.

After his father finished his meal, he rapped his knuckles on the table and everyone laid down their silverware and stopped eating as the servants abruptly cleared the table and started laying dessert on the table. There was a very wide variety of desserts to choose from, mini cakes, macaroons, and cream cake. Dionysus wasn't a very big fan of sweets , it made his nauseous whenever he ate something overly sweet, though he did like macaroons.

After everyone was done eating his father dismissed everyone, having the honor of leaving his chair first. Dionysus left second, dale left third and so on.

Dionysus finally made it to his room again. He kicked off his shoes and just laid in bed, he was exhausted just from that dinner. It wasn't that he didn't like his family, he loved them very much actually, they were just doting and sometimes annoying. Just as Dionysus was getting comfortable he heard a knock on his door and the shouting of his name. It was his brother, dale. "Come in!" The second Dionysus responded the door swung open. Dale was a tall, slim young man, with long black hair, about a quarter down his back, tied in a pony tail. He had very soft facial features, a thin nose and soft lips, but unlike Dionysus he had striking blue eyes. Dionysus was the only one in his family without blue eyes, as he had inherited his black eyes from his mother. A whore.

His brother, dale, always cared for him, Dionysus was his favorite sibling and has always been. Dionysus really didn't get why, as he wasn't noble or honorable or even successful, dale on the other hand was noble, honorable, strong-willed, and was naturally a leader. If anything Dionysus should have been looking up to him. "Dion! Are you alright?" Dale asked in a worried voice. Apparently he saw how uncomfortable Dionysus was during that entire dinner, sometimes he loved his brothers attentiveness and sometimes he hated it, twas' a double edged sword. Dale ran in and gave Dionysus a hug. Dale was such a worrywart. "Yes, dale, I'm fine." After Dionysus said these words dale looked slightly suspicious and off put, he definitely knew that Dionysus was lying, but he never liked to push Dionysus until he was uncomfortable, he was truly a great sibling. They sat and spoke about frivolous things for hours until a servant came to fetch dale for his evening classes. Since Dale was supposed to inherit the throne he had more classes than any of his other siblings, Dionysus was truly glad he couldn't inherit the throne due to politics. When Dale left Dionysus was lonely and bored, so he laid back down on his bed, looking up at the ceiling. And finally fell asleep
