Summary: Star gets her wand, and causes chaos.
Heckapoo screamed. "Come on you mangy feline, can't you stay still for five minutes!? I will invent an indestructible collar if you keep this up!" She shouted at the woods.
"Grrrrrrrrh." The growl was the only thing she got back in return. Even the peskiest Scissors thief didn't give her such a headache.
"I swear the Rose Guard left you to me as a big 'F U'." They were never on what you could say amicable terms. Whenever she showed up to a Commission meeting, they usually were on the exact opposite side of whatever argument the other had.
Then again after the Eclipsa fiasco, the woman was on the opposite side of the Commission itself on certain occasions. There was no argument Rose could make after Globgor ate Shastican, but if she hated how Festivia was running things, she should've done more to lead her in a better direction rather than running back to earth.
Heckapoo continued to walk, looking for any form of tracks she could follow. Despite being a Dimension Hopper the thing was a freaking lion, its footprints should have been easy to find. Normally the nuisance wouldn't be this difficult to track, it was only able to teleport to dimension's it's been to before. Unfortunately, one of her duplicates left a few portals open and the floodgate opened from there.
And even then, that wouldn't have been a problem if she could get the stinkin overgrown house pet to listen to her, but nope, it ran off by it's on pretty much every other day without warning, and she couldn't risk any unsavory individuals having a walking pair of dimensional scissor armed with teeth and claws that could rip through solid rock.
So thus began the game of cat and annoying mouse that can kill many many cats. And now she had to track which dimension he was even located in! She couldn't even count on how many nights of sleep she lost out on trying to keep up with the cotton candy colored cat, she lost count after two months.
Sure, she could probably send her clones to do the work, but the cat made it personal by this point, she wouldn't rest until she personally saw to it that this beast's head WAS MOUNTED ON HER…! "Hey Lion, you decided to sneak off again, didn't you?
Her eyes twitched as she slapped her forehead, realizing that it should've been obvious where the cat ran off to by this point. "Ah, a vicious feline after my very own heart. It's great to see you, you living pink pile of dreams." The eldest Butterfly voice chimed into the air as Heckapoo peaked her head out to see the princess and the prince petting the beast like it was a common house cat.
"I still don't get why he only listens to you." Heckapoo rolled her eyes as she made her presence known, pointing to the younger Butterfly.
"Not sure if I call it listening to me. I just pet him alot and he takes me usually wherever I feel like going at the moment, or someplace fun I never knew." Quartz Butterfly shrugged. "Though I could've lived without going to the blender dimension."
"Maybe you should treat him nicer, like with treats and cotton candy." Star Butterfly suggested. "Then he wouldn't feel like running away all the time. Back me up, Lion." The beast looked at her, before plopping back down into Quartz's lap. "He totally agrees."
"I'm not going to-wait you named him Lion?" She expected some creativity from the wild children.
"Yeah, because out of every lion in the universe, he's the most lion-est lion that ever existed." The prince explained. "I never hear you call him anything other than a pest, so I thought he could use a name."
"I don't even know if the Rose Guard had a name for him. Heck, I didn't even know she had a lion to begin with. The woman was mysterious in the worst possible ways at times."
The boy gasped. "This was the Rose Guard's lion!?" He asked. "You just said he was a dimension hopper you were told to guard! You just got even cooler, Lion!" The pest actually had the gall to look bashful at that.
"Yep, basically a last request sort of thing between old co-workers, for as much pain as it causes me." She swore if she ever saw that walking pile of hair curls again, she would inflict the thousands of years of trials onto her this pest inflicted on her. "What are you kids doing here anyways? Isn't it your fourteenth birthday, Star?"
"Unofficially, yes!" The girl said elatedly. "Just thought I'd get a few more normal monster punches with my bro before I upgrade to magic punches."
"Why were they mad at us this time?" Quartz asked his sister "Was it because we crashed that one picnic or because we stopped them from taking some of the corn?"
"Monsters don't need a reason to be mad, they're evil and hate Butterflies." Heckapoo told the kid, and she suddenly felt three weeks of sore muscles and lethargy overtake her body. "Look, I'm really not in the mood to look over Mr. Lion today." The mangy cat sent her a hiss. "So as long as you keep him in one dimension, could you please watch him? I need to make a portal proof collar before bringing him back."
"Of course, you can count on us." The girl's eyes sparkled with mischief. "Quartz, we gotta ride him!"
"Yeah, it'll be the perfect entrance! We can make it on time and look as epic as possible! The future queen of Mewni, riding atop a ferocious pink lion!" Hearing that out loud made her regret the idea somewhat…but she spent over a hundred years looking after this thing, she was entitled to one break this century!
"Yep, happy wand day, enjoy the house cat, I'm going to go to sleep for a milenia." She ripped open a portal and walked through. After a few winks, she needed to focus on getting rid of that old man with the portal gun.
========================================================================
"They couldn't get here just a little bit early. Five minutes, heck, one minute earlier, is that too much to ask of them?" River just nodded silently as his lovely Moon Pie ranted as the rest of the subjects of Mewni awaited the appearance of their eldest child. "It's THE defining moment of her entire life, and she's barely going to make it on time."
"Now dear, don't be too hard on Star. She has her brother with her at the moment, she wouldn't do anything too crazy while looking over him." Looking after Quartz was the one iota of responsibility Star took seriously.
"Her idea of watching over him pertains to aiming his exploding bubbles towards monsters. Rose, you could've explained how your powers worked just a little." She loved Quartz as her own, as did he, but mentioning Rose Quartz always brought Moon's mood down.
"However, they have both been experiencing the desire to learn magic. This is their first big step to doing so after all." He smiled. "I'm sure they'll be here at any moment, taking this moment like the educated children they are."
"Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!" A thunderous roar echoed through the air, and while the crowd began to panic, the king and queen just sent each other a knowing look. They were half expecting Star to show up on a wild unicorn, so this was actually a bit of a step up…though not by much.
"Yahooooo!" The voice of Quartz cheered as a giant pink hole in the sky appeared above everyone, and seconds later, their children came out of it, riding atop of Heckapoo's pet cat that the Rose Guard entrusted to her. "Greetings Mewni, welcome one and all, to Star Butterfly's wand day!" The giant cat slid across the room until it stopped, allowing Star and Quartz to flip off the creature and land in front of them. "I give you a solid star for an awesome landing."
"And you get a solid ten for the pun." The two gave a quick hug to each other before Star made her way towards the wand, jumping eagerly up and down, looking like she would explode from anticipation.
"Now Star.." Moon held the wand up high, keeping it out of the excited girl's grasp. "Taking this wand is a great responsibility." Moon made sure to stress seriously. "If it falls into the hands of evil forces, then the universe could be destroyed."
"Yeah, yeah, I know…"
"Which means you have to promise to never let it out of your sight…"
"Important heirloom, got it." Star hadn't lost that hungry and greedy glint in her eye.
"And you shouldn't use it on civilians or people in general…."
"Monsters are totally free game, already knew that…"
"And you shouldn't use it as an excuse to seek out mindless brawls…"
"Yeah yeah, no unnecessary punching."
"Star." She boobed the girl's nose, getting her focus back. "I'm serious. You can't afford to make any mistakes with the wand."
Star nodded slowly, before quickly snatching the wand from Moon's grasp and holding it up high herself. A bright and glimmering shine gleamed from the wand, transforming from its scepter with a blue heart at the top form, to a more roundish object with butterfly like wings on both sides of it, and a yellow star shaped crystal in the middle of it. The wand was officially Star's now.
"Relax mom, I totally got this!" His daughter's bravado was great to see, if incredibly misguided. "Come on, Quartz, let's get this show on the road!"
"Actually Star, give us a moment, I'd like to have a chat with your brother before you do anything else." Moon ordered, and while their children looked at each other cautiously, they nonetheless obeyed. "Quartz, you know how many times I've cautioned you about being too comfortable around this lion."
"But he's completely tamed! Every time he sees me, all he wants is a head pat and a lion licker." Quartz grimaced at that last detail. "And he belongs to the Rose Guard! That makes him a million times more amazing! To think, I'm riding on the back that the Rose Guard once rode on too!" … They never even comprehended that this thing would be attracted to Rose's son. They could only thank the corn that they taught him the importance of covering his stomach.
"Be that as it may, we'd rather not risk you dimension hopping with a vicious carnivore, not to mention that the Rose Guard title carries a lot of weight to it, including many enemies carrying grievances." River explained. The Serpentis alone would be the first in line to tear the boy apart if the truth was known.
"Don't worry, guys! As long as my family is in Mewni, I plan on staying firmly planted right here!" One of the few things Quartz had over Star was that he didn't complain too much about castle life, or at least was more inclined to listen to their advice. "Well, I'd promise to be there for Star's first official spell casting, we've been thinking up a bunch of stuff to put in the magic spell book for years now!" Their adopted son climbed about the pink lion and rode out of the room.
"He's certainly inherited Rose's love of life, that's for certain." Moon sighed as everyone began to exit. "Naive optimism at its finest. I'm not too sure how well that mixes with Star's….adventurous personality. I think it might be time to discuss some nuclear options."
"I'm not exactly a fan of Saint Olga's." River spoke. Never trusted whatever came out of that place, and the headmaster gave him the heebie jeebies.
"Admittedly that is a very extreme case, but the girls always come out practically a new princess when it's all said and done. Besides, there might be another way to settle Star's rambunctious nature…though that comes with a few risks."
"We're Butterflys, aren't we? Since when have we been afraid to take risks?" His Moon Pie's boldness was just one of the reasons why he loved her.
"I think we might have to place Star in a separate dimension altogether."
"Boarding school isn't too bad." He shrugged. "We'll just pay the nice people with some gold and let Star and Quartz expand their circle of friends." It would do them both good to spread out their social skills.
========================================================================
"Okay, today is the day, and the moment is the moment." Quartz smiled at his sparkling sister. The two of them rode a lion near the outskirts of town, and he stood atop the mighty creature as he watched his sister getting pumped. "You, Star Butterfly, rightful owner of the wand, are going to cast your first spell." He used his announcer voice. "What … will you cast?" He'd finally get to see his sister's awesome wand magic in action!
"There's just so many options to choose from! I've been dreaming about this day for like, ten years! How could I possibly choose!?" Star went through the note the two of them had been writing down ideas inside for years. "I can't do it, Quartz, choose for me!" She threw the book at him.
"Alright, alright." He looked through the journal. "Let's see … I wanna ditch anything Gloseryck told us, he keeps getting my name wrong." The little blue man just rubbed him the wrong way whenever he talked to him.
"He might be onto something, from the right angle, you do look like a 'Steve'." Star said with a tilted head.
"Don't get started on that too. I'm a Quartz, there's nothing that's ever going to change that." He flipped through the book rapidly. "Alright, what about a Bacon Pancake Buffet Blast?"
"Sounds tasty, but it's lunch time, not really in the mood for breakfast anymore."
"Okay, what about the Super Sunshine Shooting Shatter Blast."
"Sounds dangerous and super fun, but a bit too simple." Star argued back. "Come on Quartz, I need a spell that screams 'me'. Whenever I shout it, I want everyone to know that it can only come from me and me alone."
"Gotcha." He nodded. "Alright, what about….this?" He showed off the page to her, knowing she would absolutely love it.
"Nice…absolutely perfect. Score one for brother-sister brain sharing!" Star shouted before waving the wand in the air and dancing around. "Super Mega NARWHAL BLAST!"
A wave of majestic narwhals took to the sky, flying with beauty and grace as they soared into the air-and into someone's house. "The Calzone was right! A giant narwhal was going to destroy my stomach! I thought it was just warning me to lay off the seafood!" The shouting of a citizen in pain echoed in the air. He was still talking, so they were fine…probably.
"Okay, the first spell could have gone better." Star admitted. "Maybe it was just wand jitters, you know? The second spell will really get 'em going."
"Right, maybe we should focus less on spells made for attacks." Quartz flipped through the notebook once more, trying to find something a little more safer. "Ah, this one sounds less dangerous."
"Oh, sounds nice and fluffy too." Star nodded and waved her wand towards the ground. "Bunny ROCKET BLAST!" Small purple rabbits were created, shot Star off the ground…and crashed into another house.
"I knew waiting one day later to pay my taxes was wrong, but I didn't think the consequences were so dire." The random woman in the second house they just destroyed just sighed constantly. "Oh great corn above, I have failed you.
"Okay, third times the charm." The princess began to rev up her wand.
"Star, maybe we should slow down. What if it attacks someone?"
"This one doesn't have a blast in its name." Yes, that would definitely help. "Spider with a Top HAT!" Oh, this would be fun! It was that imaginary friend Star made up when she was seven, the one that she said did silly dances and…
"WHY THE CORN DOES IT HAVE A GUN IN ITS HAT!?" Quartz couldn't waste any time as he jumped in front of the creature and summoned his bubble to stop the bullets from hitting anyone, although he couldn't account for the force of them pushing him back…or the strain that making this bubble was putting on him.
"I always imagined him to be the strongest guy I know!" Star shouted her explanation. "You might want to take down your bubble before you end up…."
KABLOOM!
"...doing that." For once, he wished the explosions did affect him if it meant nothing else got damaged or hurt. Now they had five houses with giant holes in them, and about two to three more that had their roofs on fire. "Okay, there has got to be a spell that can fix this." She paused. "Rainbows are made of water right?"
"Star, I really think we should just get mom to handle this." She grew up with the wand, she'd probably know some trick to making it work. "Or even Glossaryck, for as annoying as he'll probably be."
"No, it's my wand now, which means I gotta figure out how this thing works, and fix my own messes. That's how that responsibility junk works, right?" He couldn't really argue with that. It sounded like something Mom would LOVE to hear Star say. "Alright, Super Rainbow Overhead Spread FIXER UPPER EXPLOSION!"
========================================================================
"How did you make the rainbow catch on fire!? That's supposed to be made of water!" Quartz asked, more like screamed.
"I was thinking about how rainbows are explosions of color…the magic probably took that a little too literally." She explained.
"Don't you remember Rhina!?"
"Well duh, that's why I haven't used magic on people yet. I'm not a psycho mad scientist who experiments on random Mewmans." Star defended, although it didn't look like it did much to ease her brother's worry. "It's not like it's too bad…every five seconds, birds fly through it, and boom, a free meal to a lucky random citizen. When you think about it, the flaming rainbow can do more good than bad."
In response her brother pointed to the flaming city. "Star, there is no possible way to hide this, we need help."
"No…well yeah, but the guard's are probably doing more than I can at the moment, getting everyone to safety, putting out the fires…clearly anything I do will just make everything worse, so best to run away until the problem goes away." That was the Ponyhead method of avoiding trouble.
"Star…" Her brother sent her a rarely seen glare of anger…well rarely seen aimed at her. He only really reserved that face for Glosseryck and her ex-boyfriend, Tom. "We are going to do the right thing here, and tell mom the truth."
"But … but … saint olgas." She shivered, the nightmare screaming in her brain. "They'll suck the life out of me till I'm a withered husk...and we won't get to see each other everyday anymore…" A world without her brother was a world she didn't want to live in.
"If that place is really as bad as you say it is, I'll break in there and save you, you don't have to worry about anything." He grabbed her arms and pulled her in a hug. "You're going to be a great queen, the best one Mewni will ever have, but a good Queen thinks about everyone, not just herself."
"… Fine." She pouted. "I'll tell mom." The price of being a good sister and keeping her brother proud of her.
"I've actually been standing here for the last five minutes." Both she and her brother froze upon hearing their mom's voice, and it took every ounce of willpower they had to force themself to turn around and face her without gulping. "Star, give me back the wand."
"But…alright." Star complied and handed it back to her mom, and it instantly changed back to the previous form. With a simple wave of blue magic, the clouds in the sky above the kingdom became darker, and a light drizzle of rain fell down upon them. "You make it look so easy." She resisted the urge to look irritated in front of her probably angry mom.
"I just have years of experience and discipline, something you frankly have very little of." Her mom began chastising, as she expected. "Your father and I expected something to go ary today, but you exceeded our expectations in how wide you'd make the destruction."
"Come on mom, it's her first time.." Quartz was ready to defend her, but the look their mom gave him made him step back a little.
"And I expected you to have the common sense to come to me when things got messy, Quartz. You know better than to use your shields in public. You could've caused a bigger catastrophe than Star if they were any bigger." Okay, Star getting heat from their mom was one thing, it was kinda her thing by this point, but she drew the line when it directed at her brother.
"Hey, leave him alone. He was just trying to step me from making a bigger mess. I was just too much for him to handle, because I'm just that good at destruction." She got in front of Quartz. "I'm the one that fired the spells, so it's all my fault." Those words stung her tongue as she said them, already feeling herself inching closer to an early grave.
"Yes, yes it is." Her mom was as blunt as a knife to the chest. "The fact you managed to come to the conclusion you need to confess at least shows you're willing to learn from your blunders, so that gives you a little leniency for the moment."
Wait, she wasn't saying what she thought she was saying, was she? "So you're not going to send me to Saint Olga's School for Wayward princesses?"
"No."
"YIPPIE!" Miracles do happen!
"Not yet at least."
"OH NO!"
"Unless…." Star is certain she's wheezing in panic at this point. "Are you willing to put in the effort to master your magic at any cost?"
"YES! Anything! Whatever you say, I'll do it!" Star got on her knees and begged.
"You will be going to school on earth." Corn that was going to be annoying … but it was better than Saint Olgas. Plus there was a new world to explore!
"Come on Quartz, let's pack our bags!" She grabbed her brother's hand to drag him back to her room, but their mom's hand pulled him back.
"Star, you're going to earth alone. Quartz has to stay here." ....
"WHAT?!" Her bro and her screamed at the same time.
"Earth has little to no magic occurring on it. From there, you'll be able to practice it in peace, and we'll be able to easily notice whether or not you're taking advantage of the situation. Your brother's magic on the other hand explodes every time he uses it. It'll be better for everyone that he stays here where your father and I can manage it."
"But wouldn't it make more sense for you to look over her magic?" Quartz asked. "You had the wand after all, right?" That's right bro, fight the good fight! Counter mom logic with mom logic!
"Yes, but my time with the wand has passed, and whatever knowledge I could pass down has been written down in the Magic Spell book. Glosseryck has taught every Queen even before Skywyne, so he's more than capable of teaching her everything she needs to know." Damn it! Why did she have to actually have good reasons!?
"Yeah, like the best ways to annoy people while eating pudding." Quartz rolled his eyes. "But if she can train there why can't I?"
"Quartz, you are aware of the marks on your face, correct?" Well that was a dumb question, those were the marks of the Butterfly family after all. "Unlike Star and myself, you weren't born with them, they're the result of the two of you being linked together on an emotional and mystical level. That however makes both of your Magic's unstable."
"Oh, so the town isn't completely my fault." Star smiled.
"In a way, yes. You're still the one that aimed said unstable magic on the unsuspecting populace though." She frowned. "Until the two of you can manage to tame the destructive power you both possess, it's better for you to train apart for the moment."
Star would be apart from her brother … for the first time in her life …"I can still visit her, right? Earth's just a hop, skip, and a dimension jump away, right?" Quartz pleaded.
"I'll get the unlimited mirror plan. You'll be able to call each other whenever you want." This was actually going to happen. She wasn't going to wake up every morning to Quartz with a brand new song he wrote all in his head, and she wouldn't sneak through the castle and have a ninja buddy to snag the last piece of pie with her from the kitchen.
"Hey, it's not like it's gonna be forever." Star chuckled hollowly as she and her brother did their best to keep their heads up. "I mean, there's Mewnipendence day to look forward to, also your birthday, the family reunion picnic, stump day, no way I'm going to miss spending time with my bro on such important days."
"Yeah, I guess…we'll also have more stuff to talk about everytime we see each other now." Their attempts at looking on the bright side of things wasn't really working. "... Big hug?"
"You never had to ask." She picked his short body up and swung him in the air. "Don't let mom make you too boring while I'm gone."
"I won't, I promise. Don't have too much fun without me while you're on earth either."
"I'll try to be a little boring on earth." She made no promises though. It was an entirely new world after all. A whole new dimension to spice things up a little.
========================================================================
" Marco Diaz to the principal's office please, Marco Diaz, to the principal's office." To any other student at Beach Creek High, hearing their name on the loudspeaker would send a sinking feeling into their guts and fill them with dread.
"Yeah that's right, Marco Diaz just got in trouble!" Not him however. Hearing it filled his head with excitement at the opportunity this opened up. "Not such a safe kid after all, aren't I?" That vote was totally rigged against him.
"Whatever Diaz, the principal's probably calling you for a perfect attendance award, since you're a dorky goodie two-shoes like that." The ever headache inducing Jana said with an eye roll and smirk.
"Of course you'd say that. Just save me a seat for when I land my butt in detention." He smirked, walking out of the door, softly shutting it to avoid damaging the structure.
He wondered exactly what it was that got him in trouble. Truth be told, he couldn't think of much, other than bringing nunchucks to school one time, but everyone just said it made him look adorable, and he threw them in the trash immediately afterwards. The one thing that he absolutely had to get down though was at least looking rebellious in front of Jackie Lynn Thomas. Hopefully this added just a little street cred in his favor.
Marco sat down right in front of the office, waiting for his cue to come in. Turning his head slightly to the side, he saw a blonde girl around his age looking like she was biting down and attacking the water fountain. It was like watching an animal come to terms with something they've never seen before. It was beyond strange, but oddly charming in it's own way.
"Ah, Marco Diaz, just the safe kid I was waiting for." The principal came out of the door, an excited glint in his eyes as he carried a big chest of gold and jewelry no member of school faculty would normally get their hands on with a teacher's salary.
"What!? Don't tell me that's how everyone knows me now!?"
"It was what you were voted for in last year's yearbook. You give the school safety patrol a run for their money." Something he unfortunately never got allowed to join, and now that one vote was ruining his life. "I need you to show our new student, Star Butterfly, around school." He looked over at the wild child with a raised eyebrow. He never heard of someone with a name … that was basically two objects.
"Oh hi, safe kid!" The girl eagerly shook his arm. "I'm Star Butterfly: Magical Princess from another dimension!" The girl waved what looked like some sort of toy in the air that somehow created a rainbow….that caught on fire. "Dang it, I thought I had that down by now."
The quite frankly, freaky and bewildering sight made him want to run and never look back. "Did I get high without knowing it?" He could have sworn he didn't take anything from the stoner kids … or Janna.
"She's our foreign exchange student." He was pretty sure candyland was a board game and not an actual country, because that was the only logical explanation as to WHERE this weirdo came from. "Her parents paid us a lot of money, and now she's your problem." Somehow that made the most sense out of anything.
"So…you're some kind of magical girl?" Marco asked tentatively.
"Well I'm magic, and I'm a girl." She giggled. "My parents are under the impression that I'm too reckless just because I fight monsters and tame wild unicorns as a hobby, so they sent me here to practice magic in a 'safe environment'."
So basically they didn't want to deal with the fires and shoved it into someone else. "Alright, just got to deal with this for today." Just show the girl around the school and he'd never have to talk or look at her again.
"Oh, could you tell me where the 'Diaz' house is? That's where I was told I'd be living during my time here." ….Damn you, overly nice and welcoming parents! The one time he didn't bring his helmet to school too!
