Alex stands slowly, his movements deliberate, calculated. His gaze locked onto mine, cold and unyielding, like steel.
There's no trace of the man who seemed distant yet kind. All I see now is the darkness that lies beneath his polished exterior.
"This isn't over, Emma," he says, his voice low and threatening, each word laced with threat. "I'll be back. But let this remain a secret. I am well - respected in the society, and you're not going to ruin that with your stupid fairy tales."
The finality in his tone sent a shiver down my spine, as if he's already decided my fate. He turned , his back rigid with authority, and walked out, leaving me standing there, my entire world crashing down around me.
The door slammed shut behind him, the sound echoing in the silent room like a gunshot. The strength drains my body, and I collapse onto the floor, tears streaming down my face as the reality of the situation sinks in.
How could he think I'd give up my child? How could he be so heartless? The thought loops in my mind, each repetition more painful than the last.
Then, a knock on the door scared me again, as I looked up meeting my colleague, Lisa. She stepped into the room, her expression a mixture of concern and confusion.
"Emma?" Her voice was soft, tentative, as if she was afraid to disturb the fragile silence hanging in the air. "I…I came to check on you. Mrs. Aria said you hadn't been yourself lately, and for two days now, you've not been at work, and I got worried."
I try to wipe the tears from my cheeks, but my hands were trembling too much to be effective. The effort is futile; the emotions are too raw, too powerful to hide.
Lisa's eyes widened when she saw the state I'm in, and she rushed over to me, kneeling by my side.
"What happened?" She asked, her tone urgent now. "Emma, talk to me."
I want to tell her everything, to spill the horrors of the past few weeks, but the words stickedin my throat. How could I explain the nightmare that my life has become? How could I make her understand the depth of my despair?
"It's nothing," I finally managed to choke out, my voice rough from crying. "Just…just some personal stuff."
Lisa's frown deepened, clearly not buying my weak excuse. She reached out, taking my hands in hers, the warmth of her touch a stark contrast to the cold emptiness inside me.
"Emma, this isn't nothing, " she says firmly, her eyes locking onto mine. "Whatever it is, you don't have to go through it alone. Let me help."
"I can't, Lisa," I whispered, my voice barely audible. "It's too much. It's too dangerous."
Her grip on my hands tightens, as if she's trying to anchor me to reality, to keep me from slipping away completely. "I don't care how dangerous it is. You're my friend, Emma. You've always been there for me. Now let me be there for you."
"A fresh wave of tears threatens to spill over, and I bite my lip, trying to hold them back. "I'm pregnant," I confess, the words slipping out before I could stop them. "And the father… he doesn't want me to take the baby after birth."
Lisa's eyes widened in shock, but she didn't let go of my hands. "Oh, Emma," she breathes, her voice full of sympathy. "I'm so sorry. But you don't have to do what he says. You have a choice. This is your life, your body, your baby."
Her words cut through the fog of despair, bringing a better clarity to my mind. She's right. This is my life. My baby. And no matter what Alex says, I have the power to decide my fate.
I nodded, the motion small, but it felt like a great step forward. "Thank you, Lisa," I whispered, my voice trembling. "I … I don't know what to do yet, but I'll figure it out "
She gave my hands a reassuring squeeze, a small smile tugging at her lips. "And I'll be here, whatever you decide."
For the first time in what felt like forever, I felt a glimmer of hope. It's faint, barely a little, but it's there, and I clinged to it with everything I had.
But even as I take comfort in Lisa's presence, I can't shake the sense of dread that's settled in the pitol of my stomach. I know Alex. I know the lengths he'll go to protect his reputation, his secrets. And I know that this is far from over.
As I lay in bed that night, staring at the ceiling, my mind raced with possibilities, plans, and fears. I don't know what the future holds, but I do know one thing: I won't let Alex take my baby.
But just as I began to drift off to sleep, I heard a noise outside my window. My heart leaped into my throat as I sat up, straining to listen. The sound was faint, but unmistakable - the creak of footsteps on the gravel path leading to my apartment.
I freeze, my mind immediately jumping to Alex.
Is it him? Has he sent someone
My pulse quickened as I reached towards the window, careful not to make any noise. The shadows outside shift, and for a moment, I see a figure - tall, broad, shouldered, lurking near the bushes.
My stomach tightened with fear. It can't be Alex, could it? I think about the men who were in my house earlier, the ones with the older man - what if he sent them?
The footsteps stopped, and I rushed to the window, just in time to see headlights disappearing down the street.
My phone rang, its loud tone piercing the tense silence. My breath beat so fast as I glance at the screen - it's the hospital.
"How is my mom?" I asked immediately, but the call cut off before I could get an answer.
Panic caught its grip on my chest as dread creeps on. Is my mom okay, or has something worse happened?
I raced to the hospital, my heart pounding with every step. But when I try to enter my mom's ward, a nurse steps in front of me, blocking my path.
"No, Miss, can you please wait here for a moment?" She says, her tone gentle and firm.
I step back, trying to peep through the glass window. My heart stops when I see the life support machine - its numbers dropping to zero. Doctors and nurses rush around her, pressing on her chest in a desperate attempt to resuscitate her.
"No! Mom, you can't do this to me!" I whisper, my voice cracking as tears blur my vision.
A nurse taps my shoulder gently. "Miss, she'll be okay," she says, offering a small forced smile.
Thank you," I reply, my voice trembling. "But how is she?" My eyes remain fixed on my mom's motionless form as the tears roll down my cheeks.
"The doctor wants to see you in his office later," the nurse replies, walking away.
Through the window, I see the doctor pressing on my mom"s chest, then shaking his head in defeat. A wave of horror crashes over me. Is all hope lost?
The memory of the secret she was trying to reveal before her heart attack floods back into my mind. What was she trying to tell me? What will happen if she leaves without telling me? How will I cope if I'm left alone?
I squeeze my eyes shut, willing the nightmare to end, but the next moment I see the heart monitor flatlining. My mom lies lifeless, the room creepily quiet except for the incessant beeping.
I rushed inside, grabbing her hand, " Mom, wake up, please!" I beg, shaking her gently.
"Miss, please," the doctor says softly, pulling me away from her. He leads me to his office, and every step feels like a walk to the gallows. My heart races, knowing the worst may be yet to come.
