The sounds of whistles wafted through the air from various corners of the vibrant training field as I approached.
Teams were scattered across the grassy expanse, some huddled on the bleachers sharing laughter, while others focused intently on their drills. Colorful food trucks lined the periphery, offering an array of refreshing drinks and tasty snacks, adding to the lively atmosphere.
Scanning the scene, I soon spotted my teammates, and then Roman who stood with his back to me, presumably watching the students begin their sit-ups. I jogged over to join him, a mix of excitement and nervousness bubbling within me.
"I'm sorry I'm late," I called out, my voice cutting through the ambient sound.
Roman shifted his focus from the students to me, his expression unreadable and those impenetrable features of his somehow both intimidating and comforting. I realized then that he held a position of authority over me, despite any informal camaraderie we shared.
