Chereads / His dragon heart / Chapter 22 - ACCIDENT

Chapter 22 - ACCIDENT

As I stepped into the lively sports center, the atmosphere buzzed with a contagious energy. Excited shouts and the rhythmic sound of sneakers hitting the ground created a vibrant soundtrack. I was in search of a club that would quench my thirst for adrenaline; the thought of joining a cooking squad or a book club sent a dull ache of disinterest through me. I yearned for the thrill of physical activity—a chance to push my body and feel invigorated during my time here.

As I meandered through the spacious halls, I was surrounded by an array of energetic activities. The track area was alive with athletes sprinting like bolts of lightning, their faces etched with determination. Nearby, swimmers coursed through the water, each stroke a testament to their strength and precision. Martial artists trained with focus and discipline, their movements a graceful dance of power. Cheerleaders practiced their routines, exuding enthusiasm that could lift anyone's spirits. My excitement peaked when I thought of the sports on offer today, while Thursdays were already earmarked for my academic pursuits in the entrepreneurship club.

Lost in thought, I strolled past the shimmering pool, its surface reflecting the bright overhead lights. I pondered if swimming might be a worthwhile pursuit when suddenly, a figure stepped into my path. I looked up to see a senior girl, her smile wide and welcoming, radiating warmth that instantly made the moment feel less intimidating.

"I'm sorry to intrude on your time," she said, her voice friendly and sincere.

"It's fine," I replied, brushing off her politeness with a slight wave of my hand, feeling a bit flustered.

With an inviting tone, she continued, "I was wondering if you'd like to join the swimming club and participate in some girls' matches. It's a lot of fun, and you'll get the chance to meet other people—networking can be useful, you know." Her enthusiasm was infectious, and I felt a flicker of intrigue even as I hesitated to commit.

She handed me a vibrant blue flyer that she had been holding. It was printed with dynamic images of girls swimming, capturing their intensity and grace as they powered through the water. Each photo seemed to pulse with life, showcasing the sheer strength that resonated within the sport.

"I'll think it over," I assured her, genuinely considering the option.

"Great! I hope to hear from you soon," she replied perkily before dashing off, leaving me with the flyer that I folded and tucked into my pocket. Feeling momentarily invigorated, I set off towards the track area, navigating past the throng of runners as they sprinted by, their faces flush with effort and concentration.

As I crossed the threshold to the field section, snippets of conversation reached my ears, drawing my attention.

"Who are those guys playing soccer?" someone asked, their voice curious.

"Oh, them? They're the earthworms. It's about time the draconians claimed the field, don't you think?" came the retort, laced with disdain and mockery for the opposing team.

Intrigued and slightly amused by the nicknames, I couldn't help but watch as the outgoing players exited the pitch, their expressions serious and concentrated, clearly accustomed to the banter. Just then, my heart skipped a beat as I spotted Julian—my crush—striding onto the field like he owned the place. He stood out effortlessly, his confident posture and athletic physique drawing my eye like a magnet. Right alongside him was Roman, his hair tousled casually as he ran his fingers through it absentmindedly.

Lost in admiration, I barely noticed Leah, my roommate, until she tapped me gently on the shoulder. Startled, I turned, only to find her leaning in playfully from the side.

"You enjoy staring at guys, huh?" she teased, a playful glint in her eyes. "Can't blame you; they're pretty hot."

"Do you know that guy?" I asked cautiously, my gaze flicking back to Julian. "I don't know why, but I just... like him."

In that instant, he lifted his shirt, wiping sweat from his forehead with an effortless grace that sent my heart racing. My cheeks heated up, and I quickly turned my head away, desperate to hide my sudden embarrassment from Leah.

"He's a friend," she continued casually as if discussing the weather. "Want his contact?"

For a moment, the question caught me off guard. I shook my head, battling thoughts that tangled in a whirlwind. What could I possibly do with his contact? The idea of pursuing someone felt both thrilling and utterly daunting—it was a mix of excitement and fear that left me uncertain.

"Okay then," Leah said with a nonchalant shrug before suddenly calling out, "Hey, Julian!" Her voice rang out across the field like a starter pistol, and I felt my pulse quicken as he turned his head in our direction, eyebrows raised.

In an instant, panic set in, and I instinctively began to edge behind Leah, using her as a shield. "What are you doing!?" I hissed through clenched teeth, my voice a frantic whisper.

"Just helping a shy roommate" Leah muttered matter-of-factly. "I'll ask if he'll give out his contact; Don't worry, I won't mention any name" She stated with a playful wink as she walked away from me, heading in Julian's direction to have a chat with him.

I stood behind feeling nervous. My heart raced inwardly and I couldn't help but fidget badly. What if he flat-out rejected me? I'll be doomed then. I just needed something to divert my attention because watching them continuously sent a wave of anxiety running down my spine.

Luckily, another female student approached me and handed out a flyer, stating that it was soccer and for the girls.

"I'll think about it" I said, for the second time today.

The girl nodded. "In case you have a quick change of mind, the registration process is going on there" She outstretched her hand to point at a direction and I gave her an approving nod only to see her walk away and going to meet other students.

My focus shifted to Leah and Julian and I wondered what they were conversing because it was taking time. Leah better not tell him anything about me and ruin my plans!

Leah returned to me after what felt like an eternity, and I raised my eyebrows curiously, hoping to glean whether her meeting had been fruitful. "What did he say?" I couldn't restrain my eagerness as she approached, my heart racing with anticipation.

"He said it's fine," she relayed, and a wave of exhilaration surged through me. I was so overwhelmed with happiness that words eluded me; I simply stared at her in disbelief. "I'll send you his contact," Leah added with a mischievous wink, and I nodded, gratitude bubbling within me.

"Yeah, we should probably leave the field now. When the draconian plays, things get rough," Leah muttered, a hint of concern in her voice.

"How do you know that?" I asked, surprised. This was Leah's first time in the school, yet she seemed to possess insider knowledge that eluded even me, and we were both freshmen.

"Someone told me—a teammate from soccer," she replied casually.

"Wait! You play soccer too?" I questioned, my intrigue piqued, and she nodded affirmatively.

"Looks like that's enough reason for me to join the club already," I whispered, my excitement barely contained. Leah remained silent, but a smile danced on her lips.

We navigated our way off the field just before the match commenced and headed toward the bleachers, joining the gathering crowd. My mind raced with thoughts; I couldn't wait to witness the fierce clash that had everyone buzzing, a match intense enough to send spectators scrambling for safety.

The timer ticked down to 90 minutes, divided into two halves of 45 minutes each. Twenty-two players took the field, eleven on each side, each team made up of goalkeepers, defenders, midfielders, and strikers. A referee stood off to the side, ready to enforce the rules, while the benches housed substitutes eagerly waiting for their chance to shine.

To my surprise, I noticed that Mr. Wyatt Gray was among the coaching staff, and I recognized a familiar face—Mrs. Hunter—accompanying him on the sidelines. The cheerleaders assumed their positions, brimming with enthusiasm as they prepared to rally support for the players below.

The bleachers weren't completely filled yet, perhaps due to it being just a regular match. At the center of the field stood two players, Roman and Julian, with a black-and-white soccer ball poised between them. A sharp whistle pierced the air, signaling the start of the match. The players exchanged quick passes, the energy in the stadium rising with each fluid movement until, with a powerful kick, one of them sent the ball flying forward to a waiting teammate.

Applause erupted as the game heated up. My heart raced as I leaned forward, captivated by the action. The ball danced across the field, drawing nearer to Julian's team. With a swift, decisive strike from Roman, the ball zipped past the goalkeeper and into the net, sending a shockwave through the crowd.

The scoreboard flipped from 0-0 to 1-0, favoring Roman's team, Aurora SC. To my dismay, I felt a knot in my stomach; I should have been cheering, but instead, I felt a pang of disappointment for Julian. My brows furrowed in subtle annoyance as the crowd erupted into cheers for Roman, who wore a triumphant smile I had never seen before. He exchanged handshakes with his teammate Ky, an expression of victory lighting up his face.

I silently vowed that if Roman won again, I wouldn't stick around to watch. As the match progressed, Julian's team managed to score, followed closely by another goal, but the game concluded with Roman's team winning 10-8. It was evident how naturally skilled he was, having honed his abilities through countless practices. I noticed the fierce determination in his eyes and the passionate movements on the field, his bright red jersey a blur of energy. The ball seemed to obey his every command, ricocheting off the posts with precision as if drawn to the net by an invisible force.

"Shouldn't you congratulate Julian?" Leah teased, catching my grim expression.

"He doesn't know me," I replied flatly, and she nodded, a look of understanding on her face as she strode away to find Julian, her footsteps light with encouragement.

My attention was drawn back to Roman, who was mid-sip of water from his can when a group of younger students hurried over to him. Their youthful eagerness was palpable as they approached, asking how he managed to play so flawlessly.

"I struggle with striking when I'm near the goalpost," one of them confessed sheepishly. "Senior, could you please show me how you did it?" he implored, admiration glimmering in his eyes.

Roman shook his head, contemplating walking away when one of the fans audaciously grabbed at his shirt. He spun around, his piercing glare locking onto the culprit, annoyance radiating from him.

"They're just your fans, Rome," Ky mouthed with an amused grin, clearly finding the scene entertaining. "You should try to be a bit friendlier," he added, leaning back with a chuckle.

"Please, Senior! Show us the trick you use!" the same enthusiastic boy from earlier pleaded again, his voice ringing out among the growing crowd. One by one, the other fans joined in, voices overlapping in excited desperation.

"Fine," Roman sighed, his voice laced with irritation, yet unable to resist the fervor of the disturbing earthworms.

He steadied himself, preparing to share his wisdom. "When you're in front of a goal post or aiming for a target, just strike and trust your instincts that it will hit the post. Don't hesitate before you shoot. You have to believe in yourself, and that's essential"

With a determined motion, he placed the ball firmly on the ground, the rubbery texture contrasting against his trainers. He took a step back, his focus narrowing as he prepared to demonstrate. In one fluid motion, he swung his foot and connected sharply with the ball.

"Woah!" the crowd gasped in unison, their eyes wide as they tracked the ball's rapid ascent, awestruck by the power emanating from Roman's kick. The ball soared high into the sky, tracing a perfect arc as it propelled through the air. Just as it seemed like it might strike someone else, fate intervened; the person moved out of the way at the last second, and instead, the ball came crashing down right onto my face.

A sudden jolt surged through me, my vision flickering into a blur of black and white. Confused, I blinked rapidly, trying to grasp what had happened. Muffled voices echoed around me as I wavered on the brink of consciousness, the world spinning like a chaotic whirlwind. As the throbbing pain intensified, my knees buckled beneath me, and I fell to the ground, the darkness closing in as I surrendered to unconsciousness.

Lights out!
