Time.
It's a funny thing to mage-born with power. We don't view it the same way that you normal humans do. We mage-born age much differently and our minds are effected by it in different ways. The day to day times of our lives can be an endless cycle of time that seems to hold no end with routine and daily habits that go on for decades and centuries.
It took some time to get myself out of the past enough to wash, dress and get down to the library located in down town Drakescape to be presented with my first job by my Cadre of all people.
Cadre was dressed in his wizard robes now these days not his unusual habit of dress because he preferred much more expansive suits and occasionally expensive time piece at his side. I knew the reason for the change. It was nothing short of fear. The other old men at the library started to get suspicious of him when I moved out his mansion suddenly last year to to get a room at the Crossroads and take a job on as a Ranger and bounty hunter for the mage born community.
Neither Cadre nor myself had given the reason for this sudden change but the elders were starting to get suspicious of him now. Evil Old Uncle Cadre had attempted to threaten to get me back to his mansion but he couldn't threaten or make me do anything. I had advanced past him and any control he had over me and now and we both knew it. He was simply beneath me.
Cadre barely looked at me when he handed me the single page for the job. I started to turn to leave with it but he reached out his hand to touch my shoulder. I smacked his hand away as I turned back to him.
"Don't touch!" I told him.
Cadre stared at me. "You can't leave with it. Just read it and hand it back to me you stupid girl." He said.
I handed it back to him. "I read it." I said and started to turn again. He attempted reach for me but he stopped when I turned toward me smiling. He froze and dropped his hand away.
"Is there something else dear uncle." I asked in a sweat voice smiling up at him from his high seated position.
Cadre nodded his slowly. "You have to read it." He said quietly.
I stared at him. "I did read it. I am to kill an undead murder that has been hunting mage born for blood and flesh. Club L is the location. I will finish the job Uncle Cadre and then you can personally give me my pay." I said sweetly to him. I stared at him drawing closer.
Cadre shook his head. "Your pay will be sent to you by messenger along with another job if you complete it on time under forty-eight hours." He said and tried to look away from me but I held his gaze forcing him to stare at me now.
"Of course Uncle Cadre. Of course. Are you doing well these days Uncle?" I said to him.
"I am fine." He said.
"You look unwell. Maybe I should visit you tonight and make you something warm to eat. You really seem very unwell. You must take care of your health." I said grinning at him.
Cadre was sweating now. He nodded his head but waved me off. "I will do so. There will be no need to visit me. Please be on your way." He said almost begging me.
I nodded. "I think your right Uncle. I'll see you soon Uncle. It's going to be a pleasure working closely with you again." I said turning walking away. There was a quiet to the library I didn't think anything of though there was a great many elder wizards and researchers there. I put it out of my mind though as I headed out to my car. I got into the driver's seat and took off for the location.
When I was no more then a few blocks away I parked in a parking port. I changed my appearance a little with a quick spell and spare clothes and got out my ride masking it another spell before I walked toward the club's entrance in a dress and boots. I walked into the club as music played inside from magical box that expanded out all around. People danced around me and I headed to the bar setting myself up as bait.
I let my magic scent flow out to attract my target as I placed silver coin on the bar and was given a beer a sipped on it. The night and time passed by me. The target was still here but not biting just yet my mind wandered again in times like these when I had nothing to do or I got bored to the past.
This was not good. I started to drink as I thought of Cadre and all those years being in his house being marked up to bind my magic. Only when I got to full maturity at fifty-two to be free of him finally. I thought it would have taken me until I was at least eighty but I had surprised myself and Mr. Big. Mr. Big. I thought of him now. I was missing him. I kept drinking. My mind was drunk on the past for a few hours until suddenly I came to myself as I was rushed outside to the back of the club by someone.
I bent over and puked in the back alley of the club as my target held my hair back from getting wet. Damn it. I drank to much again. I was nervous. No. That was a lie. The past was catching up with me again. I had forgotten to block it out to keep back the madness.
The fucking memories got to me again. I felt the flashes of my past moments. My mind was jerked to the present. Something was wrong. I felt a strange warmth on my ass at the spot where my date had his hand on my ass.
I spun around elbowing him in the nose and sliced his cheek. He screamed like a bitch backing up as I advanced on him kicking him in crutch and pushed him down to the street corner and stomped down on his dick with my boots.
I put the knife to his throat and the silver burned at the touch of his skin. He stared at me in growing fear. "You've over stayed your welcome death walker." I spoke to him softly.
I heard and felt someone behind watching. "Leave. This matter doesn't concern you. I can handle my own safety myself. This isn't any of your business or affairs." I said.
"Slay him. He was given a warning already." An elder said using voice as a keen identification of who he was.
I drove the silver blade into the vampire's chest. He died screaming in holy fire and ashes. I turned around to face the elder with silver blue eyes dressed in a suit and trench coat. His sword was out in his left hand.
His left hand? Shit. There was only one left handed elder in this city. Alex Silverstone. I bowed to him and put my knife away. "I'm sorry it took me to long hunting him. He caught me off guard." I said.
"I am aware of that. If you hadn't been trained by your uncle he would have killed you." He said.
I snarled at the mention of that bastard. "He didn't train me. He used me in more ways beyond sex and experiments." I said.
"I am aware of that to that is why he is dead." Alex said bluntly.
I stared at him. "I wasn't made aware he was that sick. I just saw him a few hours ago at the library." I said.
"Yes. It was rather sudden. He died in combat by my blade. I had to clean up shop once the elders realized that he could no longer be allowed to live." Alex said in neutral tone of voice.
I bowed to him. This was not happy news entirely. There was a reason I hadn't killed Cadre Wells. Now that he was dead that left me the only heir of our family as guardian to our secret. He had been killed a few hours ago? Mr. Big would be freed by now and waiting for me. If he thought I had abandoned him I was in serious shit. "You have my thanks as does many other poor souls that black soul touched. May I leave now?" I said.
Alex shook his head. "No. You have been recruited into the Spell Swords division as a replacement for Cadre. I expect you at the new headquarters at the old library within the next five hours. Be sure to dress presentable. Oh and next time instead of acting as bait for prey wait for him to find his target and execute him on site." He said.
I nodded. "I will Sir." I said.
He bowed turned and walked away without another word. I waited until he turned a corner to pull back my leather jacket sleeve to check my clock tattoo. It had started counting down. I had to get back to the mansion in hurry or master would come hunting for me.
