Chapter 27 - chapter 30

As I walked out of the office, still riding the high from my plans for Emma, my phone buzzed in my pocket. I pulled it out and glanced at the caller ID. It was my parents. A wave of anticipation washed over me. We usually had our weekly check-in, but I had a feeling this call might be different.

"Hey, Mom," I answered, my tone light.

"Alex! It's good to hear your voice," she said, her tone bright but tinged with something I couldn't quite place.

"Good to hear yours too. How's everything?" I asked, leaning against the wall outside my building.

"Oh, you know, the usual. Your father and I were just discussing our future," she began, and I could hear the excitement in her voice.

"Your future?" I echoed, a hint of curiosity creeping in.

"Yes, well, you know we've been thinking about the family. We really want to see you settle down, start a family of your own," she said, her voice laced with urgency. "It's important for the business legacy, and, quite frankly, for us."

I chuckled nervously. "I appreciate your concern, but I'm focused on my career right now. You know how busy I've been."

"Alex, dear, we understand that. But your father and I are getting older. We want to know that our legacy is in good hands, and that means an heir. We'd love to see you with someone special." Her words hung in the air, and I felt a tight knot forming in my stomach.

"Mom, I promise I'm not ignoring that part of my life. It just hasn't happened yet," I replied, trying to keep my voice steady.

"Well, it's time to make it happen," she insisted, a hint of desperation creeping into her voice. "You've worked so hard. You deserve happiness, and we want to see you happy. We're starting to worry, Alex. Your father and I want grandkids before it's too late."

I sighed, rubbing my temples. "I know, but I'm not going to rush into something just to appease anyone. Relationships are complicated, and I want to make sure it's right."

"But what about that lovely woman you were telling us about? Emma, was it? You should invite her over for dinner. Get to know her better," she suggested, clearly trying to steer me toward a path she had in mind.

The mention of Emma made my heart race, but I quickly composed myself. "We're still figuring things out, Mom. It's not that simple."

"Alex, we're just saying you should consider it," she urged, her tone softening. "Family is everything, and we want to share that with you. Please think about it."

"I will, I promise," I said, not wanting to further upset her. "I need to go, but I'll call you later in the week."

"Okay, sweetheart. Just remember, we love you, and we're here for you," she said, her voice filled with warmth.

"Love you too, Mom," I replied, disconnecting the call and letting out a deep breath.

I leaned against the wall, my mind racing. The pressure of family expectations weighed heavily on my shoulders. The idea of settling down felt daunting, especially when my heart was just beginning to open up to someone like Emma.

But as I stood there, I couldn't shake the thought that maybe, just maybe, this was the right time to explore a future with her. If I was going to take the leap, it would be with someone who inspired me, someone like Emma.

I pushed myself off the wall, determination building within me. If I wanted to build a life and a legacy, I needed to take action. Maybe my parents had a point after all. I had to figure out what I truly wanted, and I hoped that in doing so, I could find a way to balance my aspirations with the expectations of my family.

With renewed purpose, I headed toward my car, ready to embrace whatever came next. Emma was a part of that vision, and I was determined to see where this journey with her would lead.
