Chapter 62 - Chapter 62 (edited)

To celebrate Jennifer's promotion, Kara and Dani had a small celebratory dinner at her house.

The hometowns of the three women are all in the same small town, and they don't have many friends here. If anything, Dani has a boyfriend now, but she wisely decided not to bring him along.

This was a party meant for the three of them. Bringing a boyfriend would not only have been inconvenient but also a distraction from their fun. The three of them had made such a fuss by the end of the evening that everything was in complete disarray.

The next day, Kara had to play chauffeur, first taking Dani home and then dragging Jennifer—who was suffering from a hangover and a splitting headache—to collect her appointment letter.

Jennifer finally got her wish and was set to take office in Gotham City in three days.

Gotham City is quite close to Metropolis, and three days was plenty of time for Jennifer to prepare.

However, Gotham City had recently endured a major upheaval and urgently needed her expertise to restore order. After Carmine Falcone, the notorious crime boss, was imprisoned, his organization fractured, leaving Gotham ripe for intervention.

Falcone's control over Gotham City had relied heavily on his extensive family network, which managed the underworld and its businesses. After his incarceration at Arkham Asylum, at least fifteen gangs splintered off from his organization, throwing the city's criminal underworld into chaos.

On the third day, Kara decided to drive Jennifer to Gotham herself.

As they were on their way, Kara received a call from Perry White, her editor.

"Why haven't you come back to work yet?" Perry bellowed, his voice loud enough for Jennifer to hear from the passenger seat. She glanced nervously at Kara, concerned about her situation.

Unfazed, Kara held the steering wheel with one hand and the phone to her ear with the other, clearly accustomed to Perry's temper.

Kara calmly explained, "Jennifer just transferred to Gotham City, and I've been helping her move."

"Moving?" Perry practically exploded on the other end. "You don't take your work seriously, do you?"

If it had been anyone else, Perry would have fired them on the spot.

But this was Kara. Not only was she his junior sister from journalism school, but her column was also one of the most popular features in the Daily Planet. Moreover, her contract made it difficult for the company to fire her without significant consequences.

Kara added, "Don't worry. I'll make it up to you. Maybe I'll interview Bruce Wayne or, better yet, get some photos of Batman. Would that work? Also, didn't I send in my column yesterday?"

Perry glanced at the draft on his desk. Kara had indeed sent her latest column via courier earlier that morning. With a resigned sigh, he grumbled, "This is how you always get away with being lazy."

Kara laughed and ended the call, handing the phone to Jennifer.

Jennifer, amused by the exchange, teased, "Perry still has a soft spot for you, doesn't he? I remember how much he looked out for you back in school."

Kara shot her a look. "Stop it. You know Perry is just a grumpy old man who knows his limits."

Jennifer stuck out her tongue playfully. Poor Perry, she thought, always getting brushed off.

As the two chatted during the drive, they eventually arrived in Gotham City.

Kara had already helped Jennifer find a safe and comfortable apartment, though the rent was understandably high. With Jennifer's current salary, however, it was more than affordable.

Jennifer's position had elevated her to a level of financial stability, with a savings account that boasted a considerable amount. This wasn't an extraordinary fortune, but it was significant for the time period, especially compared to the average Gotham resident.

Although she could easily accept bribes to accumulate even more wealth, Jennifer was known for her integrity. As a prosecutor, her reputation for fairness and justice was unshakable.

Even Bruce Wayne, when called upon by Kara to host a welcome dinner for Jennifer, praised her dedication over the phone.

However, Jennifer was slightly mortified when Bruce failed to remember that she had been his classmate.

Despite this awkward moment, Bruce still arrived in person that evening to meet the two women.

Kara, as usual, was dressed casually—wearing a shirt, pants, and sneakers. Her ponytail gave her a youthful and relaxed appearance, though her glasses slightly disrupted her overall aesthetic.

Jennifer, on the other hand, had taken great care with her outfit, opting for a blue dress, elegant heels, light makeup, and a simple pearl necklace. Her polished appearance made her stand out, even next to someone as striking as Kara.

When Bruce arrived, even he couldn't help but notice Jennifer's beauty, though his reaction was polite rather than overly enthusiastic. Jennifer, for her part, was quietly pleased that her efforts hadn't gone unnoticed.
