Chereads / I Wield Shadows / Chapter 82 - The Weight of the Heart

Chapter 82 - The Weight of the Heart

Kai sat at the edge of his bed, staring at the faint, swirling shadows crawling across his bracer. The Heart of Shadows pulsed faintly, its energy alive yet silent, like a beast slumbering but ever watchful. The events of the night weighed on him—Aria's warning, the Purifiers' fanatical attack, and the words their leader had spat with such certainty.

*"The Heart will consume you, just like it consumed the others."*

It wasn't the first time Kai had heard those words. Ever since he bonded with the Heart, doubt had become his silent companion. Was it true? Would the Heart devour him like a parasite, hollowing him out until he was no better than the monsters he fought?

A knock at the door jarred him from his thoughts.

"Kai?" Lysandra's voice came softly. "I'm coming in."

She entered without waiting for a response, her usual confidence tempered by concern. She carried a tray with two cups of steaming tea, setting it down on the table before sinking into the chair across from him. For a long moment, neither of them spoke.

"You haven't slept, have you?" Lysandra finally said, her voice quiet.

Kai shook his head. "Not much."

"You're thinking about what that Purifier said."

"Wouldn't you?" Kai replied bitterly. He leaned back, his gaze drifting to the ceiling. "What if they're right, Lys? What if this power is going to destroy me?"

Lysandra studied him carefully before responding. "Do you want to know what I think?"

Kai glanced at her.

"I think they're scared of you. Scared of what the Heart can do—what *you* can do. And when people are scared, they'll do anything to justify their fear."

Kai let out a dry laugh. "It doesn't matter what they think if they're right."

Lysandra stood, walking over to him. "No. What matters is *who you are*, Kai. You're not some mindless beast. You're not going to lose yourself—not unless you choose to."

He met her gaze, her words cutting through the haze of his doubt. "What if I don't have a choice?"

"Then we'll fight it," Lysandra said firmly. "Together."

Her conviction startled him. It was unwavering, like a steady flame cutting through the shadows. For a moment, Kai allowed himself to believe her, to believe that he wasn't completely alone in this fight.

The next morning, the tension at NYX Academy was palpable. Rumors of the attack in the Solaris Arena had already spread like wildfire, though no one knew the full details. Whispers of the Purifiers, of shadow wielders and dangerous heretics, echoed through the hallways, carried by nervous students and watchful instructors.

Kai felt every eye on him as he passed through the courtyard, though most avoided his gaze. Only a few dared to stare openly—some with curiosity, others with barely concealed hostility.

"They're acting like you're some sort of villain," Lysandra muttered beside him.

"Maybe that's what I am," Kai replied under his breath, though his tone lacked conviction.

Before Lysandra could respond, a booming voice cut through the murmurs.

"Kai Velren!"

The courtyard fell silent. At the far end, a tall figure strode toward Kai, his crimson coat trailing behind him. It was Instructor Aldren, one of the academy's senior combat trainers and one of the most outspoken critics of the Heart's presence at NYX.

Kai straightened, bracing himself.

"Instructor," Kai said respectfully as Aldren stopped a few paces away, his sharp eyes narrowing.

"I heard there was trouble in the arena last night." Aldren's voice carried easily, ensuring everyone nearby heard every word. "Something about shadow powers and academy rules being ignored."

Lysandra opened her mouth to retort, but Kai gave her a subtle look, stopping her. He turned back to Aldren. "It wasn't trouble I started."

Aldren's lip curled. "So you admit there *was* trouble. Did you think the Council would turn a blind eye to this? That your power exempts you from consequences?"

"I defended myself," Kai said evenly, though his fists clenched at his sides. "And I didn't break any rules."

Aldren stepped closer, his voice lowering but no less dangerous. "That power on your arm—*the Heart*—is a curse, Velren. You're a fool if you think you can control it forever."

Kai met his gaze, unflinching. "Maybe. But until then, I'll keep using it to protect the people who can't protect themselves. Isn't that what we're supposed to do here?"

The crowd murmured, a ripple of uncertainty passing through them. Aldren's expression darkened, and for a moment Kai thought he might attack. But instead, the instructor turned sharply on his heel.

"Enjoy the time you have left," Aldren said coldly as he walked away. "Because when you fall, no one will catch you."

Kai exhaled, the tension in his shoulders finally easing as the courtyard slowly returned to life. Lysandra grabbed his arm, pulling him aside.

"He's a snake," she hissed. "You know he's just waiting for you to slip up."

"I know," Kai muttered, his mind already elsewhere. Aldren's words had cut deeper than he let on, not because of the insult, but because of the truth buried in them.

*What happens if I really can't control the Heart?*

---

That evening, Kai sat alone in the academy's abandoned library, a forgotten corner of the building where dust-covered shelves stretched into shadow. He had come here in search of answers, but so far, the ancient tomes had offered him little comfort.

He flipped another brittle page, his eyes scanning for any mention of shadow wielders or the Heart. The legends were vague, often incomplete, but the message was always the same—those who wielded the Heart's power had either vanished or been consumed by it.

With a frustrated sigh, Kai leaned back, staring at the cracked ceiling.

"Looking for something?"

Kai bolted upright, his hand snapping to his bracer. The voice had come from deeper in the library. He narrowed his eyes, the shadows shifting unnaturally as a figure stepped into view.

It was a young man, maybe a year or two older than Kai, dressed in black robes embroidered with silver. His features were sharp, his dark eyes glinting with amusement.

"You're him," the stranger said, tilting his head. "The shadow wielder. The one bonded to the Heart."

"Who are you?" Kai demanded, his voice low.

The young man smiled faintly. "Someone who understands what you're going through. Someone who knows what the Heart really is."

Kai's heart skipped a beat. "You've seen the Heart before?"

The stranger's smile widened. "Oh, I've seen far worse than the Heart of Shadows. I've seen what it *becomes*. What *you* might become."

Kai took a cautious step forward. "What do you mean? Tell me what you know."

The young man chuckled, but it was a hollow sound, devoid of warmth. "All in good time. But know this, Kai Velren—there's more to the Heart than the academy or its Council will ever admit. And if you want to survive, you'll have to embrace the darkness fully."

Kai's eyes narrowed. "Who are you?"

The stranger's form flickered, as if he were part of the shadows themselves. "A friend. For now."

Before Kai could say another word, the figure melted into the darkness, leaving the library silent once more.

Kai stood frozen, his mind racing. The stranger's words echoed in his head, chilling him to the core.

*Embrace the darkness fully...*

For the first time, Kai wondered if the real danger wasn't losing control of the Heart.

But giving in to it willingly.
