Chereads / I Wield Shadows / Chapter 68 - A Gathering of Shadows

Chapter 68 - A Gathering of Shadows

The academy grounds were alive with murmurs as students whispered about the spectacle Kai had put on in the arena. Some looked at him with newfound respect, while others glanced his way with suspicion or outright disdain. He knew, despite his success in the trial, that he'd won few allies. Most people still saw him as a threat, someone to watch cautiously, waiting for the moment he would slip.

Lysandra walked beside him, silent but radiating tension. When they finally found a quiet alcove between two towering columns, she turned to face him, her expression troubled.

"Kai, you held back everything in there," she said, her voice low. "You didn't use any of your shadow powers, even when you could have. But that was dangerous. They could've killed you."

Kai managed a small smile, shrugging. "They expected me to lose control. That's why they were watching so closely. But I couldn't give them the satisfaction."

Her frown deepened, worry etched into her features. "And what happens next? They're not going to stop testing you. Albright won't be satisfied until he either has you under his control or…well…you're out of the picture."

Kai met her gaze steadily. "Then I'll keep proving them wrong. Albright wants me to break, to show weakness. But I can't afford to give in, Lysandra. Not with everything at stake."

A pause lingered between them before she spoke. "There's something you should know. My family…they've been in contact with the academy council. They're pushing for you to be put under stricter watch—restricted powers, limited access to the archives."

Her words stung, but he forced himself to keep his expression neutral. "It's not your fault. I know your family has a position to uphold here. They have to look out for themselves."

She shook her head, frustration flashing in her eyes. "But that's just it, Kai. It doesn't have to be this way. They only see you as a threat because they don't understand what you're capable of. If they could see beyond their own fears… if they'd only give you a chance…"

Kai put a hand on her shoulder, giving it a reassuring squeeze. "Then we'll show them. One trial at a time."

As they stood there, a shadow emerged from the nearby hallway. It was Aria Lune, the academy's elusive information broker. She approached them with her usual quiet grace, her eyes flickering between them with a hint of curiosity.

"Kai," she greeted, her voice barely more than a whisper. "Interesting performance today. You've certainly caused quite a stir."

Kai inclined his head, studying her. Aria was known for her uncanny ability to uncover secrets, and he had a feeling that she hadn't approached him just to exchange pleasantries.

"What do you want, Aria?" he asked, his tone wary.

She smiled faintly, her gaze assessing. "The same thing you do: to see how far you can push the academy's boundaries. And I think we may have a mutual interest in shaking things up."

Lysandra stiffened beside him, but Kai's curiosity was piqued. "Go on."

Aria's smile widened, her eyes gleaming with mischief. "There's something you should see. Follow me, both of you."

They exchanged a glance before following Aria through a series of winding corridors. She led them down a narrow staircase that seemed to spiral endlessly into the depths of the academy. Kai's pulse quickened as they descended, feeling the air grow colder and the shadows thicker.

Finally, they reached a heavy, iron-bound door. Aria reached into her cloak and withdrew a small key, unlocking the door with a deft twist of her wrist. She pushed it open, revealing a dimly lit chamber lined with shelves of ancient tomes and scrolls.

"The Forbidden Archives," she announced, her voice soft but full of reverence. "This is where the academy hides knowledge it deems… dangerous."

Lysandra looked at Aria, eyes wide with disbelief. "How did you gain access to this place? Only high-ranking professors and council members can enter."

Aria's smile was mysterious. "I have my ways."

Kai stepped into the chamber, his gaze sweeping over the shelves. The air was thick with the scent of old parchment and dust, but there was a power in the room that hummed beneath the surface, as though the very walls were alive with secrets.

He moved toward one of the shelves, his fingers brushing over the spines of the ancient tomes. "What exactly are we looking for, Aria?"

She walked over to a particular section of the shelf, pulling out a book bound in dark leather. The title was inscribed in faded silver letters: *The Lost Shadow Codex.*

"This," she said, holding the book out to him. "It contains knowledge of the shadow arts—techniques and spells that have been forbidden for centuries. Some believe it to be a mere myth, but I assure you, it's very real."

Kai took the book from her, a thrill of excitement surging through him as he opened the cover. The pages were filled with symbols and diagrams, descriptions of abilities that went far beyond anything he'd ever learned.

"This could help me…teach me to control my powers," he murmured, barely able to contain his excitement.

Aria nodded. "Indeed. But there's more. I believe the academy has suppressed this knowledge to maintain control. Those who wield the shadow arts are rare, and if they knew their full potential, the academy's grip on power would be threatened."

Lysandra glanced at Kai, a hint of fear in her eyes. "Kai, this is dangerous. If they catch you with this…"

He met her gaze, his expression determined. "They've already branded me a threat, Lysandra. But if I can learn to control these powers, I won't be a pawn in their games. I'll be ready for whatever they throw at me."

Aria placed a hand on his shoulder, her voice soft but filled with conviction. "The academy has always been a place of secrets and shadows. But not all shadows are meant to be controlled. Some are meant to be wielded."

Kai nodded, tucking the codex into his cloak. "Thank you, Aria. I won't forget this."

With a final nod, she turned and slipped back into the darkness, leaving him and Lysandra alone in the chamber. They made their way back up the staircase, the weight of the forbidden knowledge pressing down on them as they emerged into the corridor.

Lysandra looked at him, worry flickering in her eyes. "This changes everything, Kai. If you go down this path, there's no turning back."

Kai met her gaze, his expression resolute. "I never wanted to turn back, Lysandra. I've been on this path since the day I lost my family. The academy wants to control me, but I won't let them. I'll master these powers on my own terms."

As they returned to the academy's main halls, he felt the weight of the codex like a heartbeat against his side, a dark promise of the power that lay within. He knew the journey ahead would be fraught with danger, but he was prepared to face it, whatever the cost.

The knowledge in the codex was forbidden, but it was also the key to his freedom—and his vengeance. And as he walked through the halls of NYX Academy, he could feel the shadows stirring around him, whispering of secrets yet to be revealed.

From this point on, his journey was no longer just about survival. It was about reclaiming the power that had been stolen from him, the power that the academy feared. He was no longer just a student. He was a force waiting to be unleashed.

With a final glance at Lysandra, he whispered, "Let the academy watch. Let them fear. Because soon, they'll see what a true shadow wielder can do."
