Chereads / I Wield Shadows / Chapter 25 - Into the Abyss

Chapter 25 - Into the Abyss

Kai stood at the edge of the abyss, the oppressive darkness swirling below, still vibrating with the ancient voice's threat. The chamber was silent now, except for the faint crackle of energy lingering in the air. His mind was in turmoil, the weight of the figure's words pressing down on him like an iron chain.

*The shadows will claim you in the end.*

His gaze shifted downward into the yawning void. It was vast, bottomless, and somewhere within it, Lysandra was trapped. The last whisper of her voice still echoed in his mind, desperate and faint.

"Kai…"

There was no time to hesitate. Kai clenched his fists, feeling the familiar rush of shadow and light coiling around him. He had made his choice. He would save her.

As he prepared to jump, a faint pulse of energy rippled through the chamber. He turned, instinctively summoning his shadow armor, only to see the walls beginning to shift. The ancient monolith, now fractured and broken, emitted faint tendrils of light—thin, weak, but growing stronger with each second. The structure was beginning to regenerate itself.

"The monolith…" Kai murmured, narrowing his eyes. The source of the dark power wasn't done yet. Whatever ritual had been in place wasn't over.

His pulse quickened. If the monolith was restored before he found Lysandra, it could seal them both inside. A trap designed to bind those who sought the truth of its power. With no time to waste, Kai turned back toward the abyss.

Taking a deep breath, he let go of the last bit of hesitation holding him back.

Without another thought, he dove into the darkness.

---

The descent was immediate, the darkness around him swallowing all light. There was no wind, no sound, only the sense of being dragged deeper and deeper into an endless void. Kai could feel the shadows clinging to him, seeping into his body, as if the abyss itself were testing his resolve.

But his mind was clear. He had to find her.

The shadows responded to his will, forming a protective barrier around him, slowing his descent. He had mastered enough of their power to command them—at least for now.

After what felt like an eternity of falling, his feet finally touched solid ground. Kai landed softly, the shadows dissipating as he adjusted to his surroundings. He could feel the oppressive weight of the darkness all around him, thicker here than anywhere he had ever been. This place was a prison for shadows, a place where light dared not intrude.

He summoned a flicker of light, just enough to illuminate the immediate area. What he saw made his breath catch.

The ground was littered with bones, scattered as far as his limited light could reveal. Some were ancient, crumbling to dust, while others were more recent, gleaming white against the blackened ground. There were signs of struggle, claw marks etched into the walls of the narrow cavern he found himself in. This was a place where many had been lost, consumed by the darkness.

But he wasn't here to join them.

"Kai…"

The voice was barely a whisper, but it was unmistakable. Lysandra was close, and she was still alive.

Kai pressed forward, his light guiding him through the labyrinth of bones and shadows. His heart raced with every step. There were no visible paths, no clear direction, only the sense of being watched by something ancient and malevolent.

As he moved deeper into the darkness, the air grew colder, heavier. His breath became visible in the freezing air, and the shadows around him began to stir more aggressively, as if they were aware of his presence, as if they were *waiting*.

"Lysandra!" he called, his voice echoing through the cavern.

No response.

A knot of dread formed in his stomach. He quickened his pace, the urgency in his chest building. Every step he took felt like a gamble, like the ground could disappear beneath him at any moment.

Suddenly, a faint glow appeared in the distance, a dim light pulsing in the darkness. Kai's heart skipped a beat. It was weak, flickering like a dying flame, but it was unmistakable. It had to be her.

He broke into a run, his boots crunching against the debris beneath him, each step echoing louder as he neared the source of the light. His breath came in ragged gasps as the glow became clearer, revealing a figure lying on the ground.

It was Lysandra.

Kai skidded to a halt beside her, dropping to his knees. She was pale, her skin almost translucent under the dim light that surrounded her. Her breathing was shallow, her body cold to the touch. But she was alive.

"Lysandra…" Kai whispered, his voice filled with relief as he gently lifted her into his arms. "I've got you."

Her eyes fluttered open weakly, barely able to focus on him. "Kai… I… I thought…"

"You're safe now," he said, brushing a strand of hair from her face. "I'm getting you out of here."

She tried to speak, but her voice was too weak. Instead, she closed her eyes and leaned against him, her body limp in his arms.

Kai stood, holding her close. The shadows shifted around him, their movements growing more erratic, more hostile. They could sense his defiance, and they did not like it.

He started back the way he came, retracing his steps through the maze of bones and darkness. But with every step, the shadows pressed in closer, their cold tendrils brushing against his skin, testing his resolve.

"Stay with me, Lysandra," he whispered, his grip tightening on her. He couldn't afford to lose her again.

As they moved deeper into the cavern, the faint pulse of energy he had felt earlier returned, stronger this time. The monolith was still restoring itself, but now Kai could feel its influence even here, far below the chamber. It was as if the entire abyss was connected to the structure above, part of a greater, more sinister design.

Then, just as they neared the edge of the cavern, the ground beneath Kai's feet shifted.

He froze.

The air around him grew still, unnaturally quiet. The shadows seemed to pull back, retreating into the walls as if waiting for something.

A rumble echoed through the cavern, deep and resonant. The bones on the ground began to rattle, shifting unnervingly. Kai's pulse quickened as he realized what was happening. Something was coming.

Out of the darkness, a massive shape began to emerge. Its form was cloaked in shadow, its features indistinct, but its presence was overwhelming. The air around it crackled with dark energy, and its eyes—two glowing orbs of pure malice—locked onto Kai and Lysandra.

This was no ordinary shadow creature.

It was something far worse.

Kai's breath caught in his throat as the figure stepped forward, its footsteps shaking the ground beneath them.

"You think you can take her from me?" the creature snarled, its voice a low growl that reverberated through the cavern.

Kai's heart pounded in his chest. This was the true guardian of the abyss, the real source of the dark power he had felt all along. And it wasn't going to let them leave without a fight.

He set Lysandra down gently, his mind racing as the creature loomed closer, its shadowy form towering over them.

Kai summoned every ounce of power he had, both shadow and light crackling in his hands. He had no choice now.

The battle for their lives had just begun.
