The air inside the temple had grown colder, a biting chill that clung to the skin and set their nerves on edge. As they stood before the glowing symbols on the wall, Yunan's sharp gaze flicked from one carving to the next, searching for a pattern, a solution, something that would make sense of the madness they were caught in.
Sasha paced restlessly behind her, her boots echoing against the stone floor, while Olivia remained still, her eyes tracing the ancient lines of the map with a furrowed brow. The silence between them was thick, weighed down by the shared realization that they were now fully at the mercy of the temple and whatever ancient force guarded it.
Yunan's hand hovered over her sword, the instinct to fight bubbling just beneath the surface. But this wasn't a battle she could win with steel and strength. The enemy here was far more elusive, far more dangerous. This was a test of wit and resolve—a test she wasn't sure any of them were ready for.
"The map shows pathways," Olivia said quietly, breaking the silence. "Each one leads deeper into the temple, but they all converge at the same point."
Sasha stopped her pacing and leaned over Olivia's shoulder to peer at the symbols. "Great. So, which path do we take? Left into a pit of spikes, or right into a lake of fire?"
Olivia ignored her sarcasm, her focus unshaken. "It's not that simple. Each path is marked with different symbols, and they mean something. I just... I don't know what yet."
Yunan crossed her arms, her patience wearing thin. "We don't have time to figure out the language of an ancient civilization. We need to move."
Olivia shot her a look, the kind that was as cutting as a blade. "If we move without understanding the symbols, we'll likely end up dead. I suggest you give me a moment."
Sasha snorted, her arms crossed as she leaned against the cold stone wall. "Yeah, because standing around in a temple that probably wants to kill us is definitely the safer option."
Yunan glanced over at Sasha, her voice low and controlled. "If you have a better suggestion, Waybright, now would be the time."
Sasha rolled her eyes but didn't respond. She hated this feeling—being out of control, relying on someone else to find the solution. Back when she'd been a commander, she could charge headfirst into danger, no hesitation, no second thoughts. But here, in this temple with its unseen traps and endless mysteries, there was no enemy she could take down with brute force. She was trapped, and she hated every second of it.
Olivia stepped back from the wall, her brow furrowed. "I think I've got it."
Sasha straightened, pushing off the wall. "Finally."
"There's a sequence to the symbols," Olivia continued, her finger tracing the path on the stone. "Each one represents a different element—water, earth, fire, air—and each path is marked with these elements in a particular order. If we choose the wrong path, we'll likely trigger another defense mechanism."
Yunan nodded, her sharp mind quickly catching onto Olivia's logic. "So, we choose the path with the elements in the right order. Which one is it?"
Olivia hesitated, her fingers hovering over the stone. "The order is... difficult to determine. But from what I can gather, the elements are meant to balance each other. If we follow water, earth, air, fire in that sequence, it should lead us safely through."
Sasha raised an eyebrow. "Should?"
Olivia's expression didn't falter. "Yes. Should."
Yunan stepped forward, her decision already made. "It's our best shot. We move now."
Without waiting for further debate, Yunan strode toward the entrance of the first passageway, her movements confident despite the tension in the air. Sasha followed closely behind, her hand resting on the hilt of her sword, ready for whatever came next. Olivia lingered for a moment, her eyes lingering on the glowing symbols, before turning to follow them into the darkness.
The passageway was narrow, the walls pressing in on either side of them. The sound of their footsteps echoed off the stone, a constant reminder of the vast emptiness that surrounded them. The air here was even colder, thick with a sense of foreboding, and the deeper they ventured, the more oppressive it became.
Yunan's grip on her sword tightened. She had been through worse—countless battles, close calls, narrow escapes—but something about this place felt different. It was as if the very walls of the temple were watching them, waiting for them to make a mistake.
Behind her, Sasha muttered under her breath. "I hate this place."
Yunan didn't respond. She wasn't here to share feelings or offer comfort. She was here to finish the mission, retrieve the artifact, and get out. Anything else was irrelevant.
Olivia's voice cut through the silence. "Wait."
Yunan stopped, her senses immediately on high alert. "What is it?"
Olivia stepped closer, her eyes fixed on a set of carvings along the wall. "These symbols... they're a warning."
Sasha groaned. "Of course they are."
Yunan's gaze sharpened. "What kind of warning?"
Olivia's fingers traced the lines of the carvings, her brow furrowed. "It's hard to say. But it looks like there's something up ahead. Something dangerous."
Sasha rolled her eyes. "Because we haven't had enough of that already."
Yunan ignored Sasha's comment, her focus on Olivia. "Can you translate any more of it?"
Olivia shook her head. "Not much. Just that whatever lies ahead... it's a test of strength. Physical and mental."
Sasha sighed, her patience wearing thin. "Great. So, we're supposed to outsmart a bunch of ancient traps and flex our muscles at the same time?"
Olivia's gaze flicked to her, a flash of irritation in her eyes. "That's exactly what it means, Sasha."
Before Sasha could respond, Yunan stepped forward, her voice firm. "We move forward. Stay close and be ready for anything."
The tension in the air was palpable as they continued down the passage, the weight of Olivia's warning hanging over them. Each step felt heavier than the last, the oppressive atmosphere of the temple pressing down on them like a physical force.
As they rounded a corner, the passageway opened into a vast chamber. The walls were lined with more carvings, and at the center of the room stood a series of large stone pillars, each one marked with different symbols.
Sasha eyed the pillars warily. "Let me guess. We have to solve another puzzle before we can move on?"
Olivia stepped closer, her eyes scanning the symbols. "It's not just a puzzle. It's a trial. The carvings say that only those who can prove their strength and cunning can pass."
Yunan's gaze swept over the chamber, her instincts on high alert. "Then let's prove it."
Before they could take another step, the ground beneath them rumbled, and the pillars began to shift, moving in a slow, deliberate pattern. Stone grated against stone, the sound reverberating through the chamber as the pillars rearranged themselves into a maze of obstacles.
Sasha's hand went to her sword, her muscles tensing. "Here we go."
Yunan stepped forward, her voice steady. "Stay sharp. This isn't just a test of strength. It's a test of everything we've got."
They moved cautiously through the chamber, their senses on high alert as they navigated the shifting pillars. The air was thick with tension, every step a potential trigger for the next trap. The sound of the stone grinding against stone was a constant reminder of the danger they were in.
As they neared the center of the chamber, Yunan's eyes narrowed. Something wasn't right. The pillars were moving in a pattern, but it was too deliberate, too controlled. This wasn't just a test of strength. There was something else at play.
Suddenly, the pillars shifted again, and the ground beneath them gave way. Yunan's instincts kicked in, her hand flying to her sword as the floor dropped out from under her. She lunged forward, grabbing onto the edge of one of the pillars just in time to stop herself from falling into the abyss below.
Sasha cursed under her breath, her hand grabbing onto Olivia as they teetered on the edge of the crumbling floor. "This is insane!"
Yunan gritted her teeth, her muscles straining as she pulled herself up onto the pillar. "We're not done yet."
The pillars shifted violently again, the sound of stone grinding against stone echoing through the vast chamber. Yunan's muscles burned as she leaped from one narrow platform to the next, her heart pounding in rhythm with the relentless movement of the floor beneath her. She could hear Sasha cursing from somewhere behind her, followed by the strained grunts of Olivia trying to keep up.
Yunan's eyes darted around, quickly assessing the next step. The room was a deadly maze, each pillar rising and falling at unpredictable intervals. She needed to find a pattern, something that could give them an edge before the floor collapsed entirely.
"Keep moving!" Yunan barked over her shoulder. "Don't think—just trust your instincts!"
Sasha's sharp retort came quickly. "That's easy for you to say! This whole place is a death trap!"
Olivia's voice was calmer, though Yunan could hear the strain in it. "There has to be some way out of this... It's not just brute strength."
Yunan landed heavily on the next pillar, barely keeping her balance as it began to shift under her weight. She could feel the sweat dripping down her back, the pressure of the situation mounting with every passing second. She glanced up, scanning the carvings on the far wall. The symbols shifted subtly, just like the pillars beneath them, as though they were mirroring the chaos in the room.
"Olivia, look at the walls!" Yunan shouted. "They're part of the pattern. The symbols match the movement of the pillars."
Olivia's eyes widened as she processed Yunan's words. She shifted her focus to the carvings, studying them intently as she navigated the treacherous terrain. "You're right! Each pillar's rise and fall corresponds to the symbols... If we time it right, we can avoid the worst of it."
"Great," Sasha snapped, her voice tight with adrenaline. "Now how about you translate that into something we can actually use?"
Yunan's gaze flicked back to Olivia, who was frantically deciphering the movements, her lips moving as she counted the timing of each shift. "We need to move toward the northeast corner," Olivia said breathlessly. "The pillars over there are more stable—if we can reach them, we'll have a few seconds to figure out the next part."
Yunan didn't hesitate. She lunged forward, springing off the edge of the shifting platform and landing on the next pillar, which was already beginning to sink. Behind her, she heard Sasha grunt as she made the same jump, barely clearing the gap. Olivia followed more cautiously, but with the same determination.
The trio moved in sync now, their steps calculated as they weaved through the shifting stone. Yunan could feel the rhythm of the pillars beneath her, the timing becoming clearer with each leap. Her mind raced, searching for the next move. They were getting closer to the far wall, but the path ahead was still treacherous, and there was no telling how long the temple would allow them to play this deadly game.
Sasha's voice cut through the chaos. "If we don't figure this out soon, we're going to end up at the bottom of this pit!"
Yunan glanced over at her, seeing the strain in her usually confident features. Sasha was tough, no doubt about it, but even she wasn't invincible. None of them were.
"We're almost there!" Olivia shouted, her voice tinged with both fear and hope. "Just a few more!"
But as they neared the final row of pillars, the temple seemed to sense their progress. The walls trembled, and the floor began to crack, deep fissures opening up beneath their feet. Yunan's eyes widened as one of the pillars ahead of them began to crumble, the stone splintering and falling away into the void below.
"We're running out of time!" Yunan growled, pushing herself harder. She leaped onto the nearest stable pillar, feeling it shift beneath her weight. Her heart pounded in her ears as she motioned for Sasha and Olivia to follow.
They were so close now, the far wall within reach, but the ground beneath them was disintegrating faster than they could move. Sasha was the first to leap across the final gap, her muscles straining as she grabbed onto the edge of the platform with both hands, hauling herself up. Olivia wasn't far behind, landing beside her, breathless but alive.
Yunan was the last to cross. She surged forward, her body moving on instinct, the floor crumbling behind her as she made the final jump. For a moment, she hung in midair, the void beneath her yawning wide, but her hands caught the edge of the platform, her grip sure as she pulled herself up beside the others.
They were safe—for now.
The ground beneath them was stable, and the pillars behind them had stopped shifting, leaving the rest of the chamber in utter ruin. Yunan knelt, catching her breath, her muscles aching from the strain. Beside her, Sasha was breathing heavily, a mixture of adrenaline and frustration in her expression. Olivia's face was pale, her usually calm demeanor cracking slightly under the weight of what they had just survived.
"Well," Sasha said, her voice strained but with a hint of sarcasm, "that was fun."
Yunan shot her a look, but there was no anger in it—just a shared understanding of the madness they were caught in. "We're not done yet."
Olivia pushed herself to her feet, her eyes fixed on the far wall. "The symbols... they're changing again."
Yunan followed her gaze, watching as the ancient carvings on the wall shifted once more, the light flickering as new shapes and patterns emerged. Whatever challenge they had just survived was only the beginning.
"The temple is testing us," Olivia said softly, more to herself than to them. "It's waiting for us to prove ourselves."
Sasha snorted. "Yeah? Well, I'd rather not keep giving it the chance to kill us."
Yunan stood, her gaze hard as she surveyed the chamber. The air was thick with tension, but there was no turning back now. They had come too far to stop. The artifact they sought was still deeper within the temple, hidden behind whatever other trials lay ahead.
"We move forward," Yunan said, her voice firm. "There's no other option."
Sasha sighed, pushing her hair out of her face. "Of course there isn't. Lead the way, General."
