Chereads / Light a Shadows: Eveline's fate / Chapter 15 - Chapter 15

Chapter 15 - Chapter 15

The hours after the visit to the infirmary passed as a blur for Eveline. The sight of Darius, one of the academy's most talented students, being consumed by an unknown force had left her restless. Alaric had suggested that she focus on her training, but Eveline knew there was more at stake. If she didn't act soon, something worse could happen. The shadows were drawing closer.

The next morning, Eveline made her way to the library tower, where the oldest volumes on magic and history were stored. If there was any clue about what was happening, it would be found among the dusty pages of those books.

As she scanned the shelves, a specific title caught her attention: "The Secrets of the Ancient Shadows." The book appeared almost untouched, its leather cover worn by time. Eveline carefully pulled it out and sat at an isolated table. As she flipped through the pages, images of dark creatures and accounts of forgotten wars unfolded before her eyes. The text mentioned an entity known as Umbra, an ancient spirit that sought to corrupt the balance between light and darkness, feeding on both magic and life.

_"Those who succumb to Umbra's influence begin to hear its voice, a whisper deep in their minds..."_ Eveline read aloud, feeling a chill run down her spine. Darius had mentioned a voice before passing out. What if...?

"What are you reading?" Aria's soft voice interrupted her thoughts. Her friend stood beside her, curiosity written on her face.

Eveline looked up, hesitating for a moment. "I think I may have found something about what's happening to Darius. There's an ancient entity called Umbra, and it seems like it could be involved."

Aria sat down next to her, clearly concerned. "Umbra... I've never heard of it. What does it mean?"

"According to the book, Umbra is an entity that corrupts those who possess magic. It poisons them from the inside out, exactly like what seems to be happening to Darius." Eveline closed the book, resting her elbows on the table and interlocking her fingers. "I need to find out if this is really what's happening, and if it is, how we can stop it."

Aria nodded, her face serious. "You're not doing this alone. I'll help."

A brief smile crossed Eveline's lips. "I knew you'd say that."

Before they could discuss more, Alaric appeared at the threshold of the library door. His face was grim, as if he already knew what Eveline had discovered. He approached silently, pulling up a chair to sit beside them.

"I feared something like this was happening," he said, his voice low, almost a murmur. "Umbra... no one has mentioned that name in centuries, but the signs are here. And if it's true, we're dealing with something far more dangerous than any of us imagined."

"You've faced Umbra before?" Eveline asked.

Alaric shook his head. "No, but I've heard stories. It's a force that existed before the first mages. A parasite of magic that feeds on disorder. And if it's beginning to corrupt the students, we must act immediately."

Eveline took a deep breath, feeling the weight of responsibility on her shoulders. She was no longer just a student of the academy; something much larger was at stake, something that required everything she had learned so far. And, at the same time, she knew this was only the beginning.

"We need to find where Umbra is hiding," Eveline said, determined. "If it's corrupting the students, there must be a point of origin, a source from where it's acting."

"I agree," Alaric replied. "And I have an idea of where to start."

He led them to a forbidden area in the academy: the catacombs. Hidden deep beneath the school, the catacombs were ancient, and many said they housed secrets that should remain buried. Only a few knew of their existence, and even fewer had permission to enter.

Alaric led the way, his magical flames lighting the tunnels as they descended deeper. The air down there was dense, filled with a strange sense of oppression. Eveline could feel the magic around them, as if something was watching their every move.

"These catacombs were built to protect the academy from external threats," Alaric explained as they advanced. "But long ago, a group of mages tried to imprison something here. Some say it was a dangerous entity, and I believe it could be Umbra."

"If it was imprisoned, how did it escape?" Aria asked, clearly nervous.

"Prison or not, entities like Umbra can't be contained forever. They find ways to escape, especially when there's chaos and abundant magic around to feed on," Alaric responded, his expression serious.

As they approached a large stone door at the end of the tunnel, Eveline felt her magic react. There was something there — something old, strong, and dangerous.

"We're close," she murmured, stopping before the door.

Alaric nodded. "Beyond this door lies the seal that theoretically keeps Umbra contained. But if it's already started corrupting the students, the seal must be weakening."

Eveline placed her hand on the door, feeling a pulsing, dark energy. She could hear a faint whisper, as if something was trying to communicate with her through the stone. "We have to go in."

With a swift motion, Alaric drew a symbol in the air, and the door opened with a loud rumble. Inside, the chamber was dark and vast, with a heavy, suffocating atmosphere. At the center of the room stood an altar, and on it, a glowing stone emitted a faint, flickering light.

"That's the seal," Alaric said, pointing to the stone. "If it breaks completely, Umbra will be released."

Eveline cautiously approached, feeling the weight of the dark power around her. She knew that the fate of the academy — perhaps even the world — depended on what they did next.

"We need to reinforce the seal," Alaric said. "But it can only be done by someone who understands the balance between light and darkness. Eveline, that's you."

Eveline's heart raced. The responsibility of keeping Umbra imprisoned was in her hands. With a nod, she raised her hands and began to focus her magic, feeling both the light and darkness within her respond to the call.

Time seemed to slow as Eveline channeled her energy into the seal, feeling the resistance of Umbra's power. It was as if something was trying to break free, trying to pull her into the darkness. But Eveline didn't give in. She stood firm, focused, balancing her energies until she felt the seal stabilize.

At last, the stone glowed brighter, and the oppressive atmosphere around them seemed to lighten slightly.

"We did it... for now," Alaric said, letting out a sigh of relief.

But Eveline knew this was only the beginning. Umbra was still there, waiting, and their time was running out.
