Chapter 33 - Chapter 33: The Uninvited Return

Marcus had settled back into his routine with surprising ease. A few days had passed since his surreal adventure, and it felt as if the Whispering Woods, the enchanted realm, and even the Turnip of Destiny were just distant memories. The simplicity of tilling soil, planting seeds, and tending his crops gave him the peace he had longed for.

But, as it often goes with peaceful retirements, the calm didn't last.

It started with a knock at the door.

Marcus wiped his brow, standing from his workbench where he'd been meticulously sorting seeds, and made his way to the door, grumbling under his breath about salespeople and uninvited guests.

When he opened the door, no one was there. He looked left, then right. Nothing. But as he was about to close it again, a small, shiny object on his doorstep caught his eye—a coin, shimmering silver, just like the one he had found in the Whispering Woods.

*Ding!*

**Quest Alert: A New Mystery Awaits.**

Marcus froze. "Oh no, no, no. You've got to be kidding me."

The familiar chime of the system sounded far too close for comfort. He had expected—hoped—he was free from it for good. Yet, there it was, ringing in his ears like an unwelcome memory.

"Not again," he muttered, picking up the silver coin with a frown. It sparkled innocently in the sunlight, but Marcus wasn't fooled. This wasn't just some random trinket. It had system-written all over it.

As he stood there, contemplating tossing the coin into the nearest pond and walking away from it all, a faint rustling came from behind him. Marcus turned to see the small, brown rabbit—the same one he had befriended in the Whispering Woods—hopping toward him.

"You again?" Marcus asked, half-amused, half-exasperated. "I thought you were part of that whole magical world business."

The rabbit stopped at his feet, looking up at him with its wide, innocent eyes. Then, without any warning, it hopped inside his house like it belonged there.

"Right, just make yourself at home," Marcus sighed, following the rabbit in. "Guess I'm back in the adventuring business, huh?"

The rabbit stopped in front of his fireplace, staring at the mantle above. Confused, Marcus followed its gaze—and there, to his utter disbelief, was the Turnip of Destiny. He had left it in the field, an ordinary vegetable, or so he thought. But now it glowed faintly, as if it was never ordinary at all.

"Great," Marcus muttered, crossing his arms. "Here we go again."

Before he could do anything about the glowing turnip or the cryptic coin, there was another knock at the door. This time, Marcus opened it to find the same robed figure from the enchanted realm standing before him.

"You've got to be kidding me," Marcus said, staring at the figure. "I thought we were done. I'm retired!"

The figure smiled, though it was hidden behind the hood. "I'm afraid there are more forces at work than we anticipated, Marcus Griddle. The balance restored was only the beginning. A new threat has emerged, and it's reaching across worlds."

Marcus groaned. "Of course it is."

"The Heart of the Realm calls upon you once again," the figure continued. "You, and the Turnip of Destiny, are our only hope."

"Does it *have* to be a turnip every time?" Marcus asked, exasperated.

The robed figure didn't respond to his sarcastic quip. Instead, they simply held out a hand, and the glowing turnip on Marcus's mantle began to float, slowly rising toward the door. Marcus shook his head, rubbing his temples.

"This is really happening again, isn't it?" he asked, but deep down, he already knew the answer.

*Ding!*

**Quest Accepted: The Real Final Battle.**

Marcus looked at the rabbit, who had somehow already made itself comfortable on his couch. "You knew this was coming, didn't you?" The rabbit twitched its nose but said nothing, naturally.

"Alright," Marcus sighed, resigned to his fate. "Looks like I'm going on one last adventure."

As the figure led Marcus toward the portal shimmering at the edge of his field—another portal, of course—Marcus couldn't help but feel a small spark of excitement. Maybe, just maybe, this wouldn't be as bad as he thought.

But then again, with his luck, it probably would be.

"Let's get this over with," Marcus muttered as he stepped into the swirling light, his rabbit companion hopping behind him, and the Turnip of Destiny glowing brighter than ever in his hand.
