Chapter 4 - Chapter 3 - Awakening (3)

Quickly scanning the area, Caelum found a few human corpses right away. They were those who were closest to the gate and could not run far from the monsters. The monsters themselves were scattered all around the park, busy chasing after the humans.

However, it seemed that among the people who were in the park, there were some who were able to fight back using strange abilities. There was a woman who shot out shockwaves with her fists. In another area, there was a duo protecting a group of people by creating walls of water and ice.

'So these are the Chosen. But they seem too weak to be able to properly fight at the front lines.'

Caelum could only sigh at the situation. He hadn't moved away from his position near the gate as there were more monsters steadily coming out. They seemed to be waiting for his move as well as they only glared at him, intimidating him with their growing numbers.

To Caelum, the situation was very troublesome as he did not know the current circumstances of Earth, especially their combat power. He wanted to kill the monsters rampaging around, but he could not leave the group that was preparing to fight him. Otherwise they would just join in and turn the situation even more chaotic.

"Fine! I'll deal with you guys first!"

There was no time to think about the consequences. The deaths that would result from this decision was something he would have to bear, but it was better than letting more souls perish. Caelum rushed in toward the group amassing by the gate. As soon as he moved, they roared together and charged toward him as well.

"Urduk il basini! Rrruuooo!"

The monster who seemed to be their leader spoke in a language he had never heard before. Nonetheless, he could somehow understand what it meant. It was obvious since the entire group began to rush forward with increased speed and viciousness than before.

Caelum pulled back his right fist just as he was about to collide with the front of the group. Then he swung it as though he throwing a punch at the monsters. It was not his fist that hit them, however. The black wing transformed into a disgusting tumorous mass and swiped in front of him. Nearly a fourth of the group was annihilated in that single attack which shocked the leader.

"Il moksa! Urduk go mune!"

"Shut up! I don't understand a single word you're saying!"

As the leader pointed at him furiously, Caelum retorted as he kept moving. The leader was still standing by the gate which was still pouring out more monsters. He wanted to kill the leader quickly since it seemed to be the one keeping the gate open.

He inspected the leader while still killing the group of monsters swarming him. The leader looked almost the same as the rest, except for its longer claws and different colour. Unlike the blackish monsters he was facing right now, the leader had a reddish tint to its skin. It looked stronger than its soldiers, but not by much.

It definitely did not look to be something that one would categorise as an overwhelming force. It was merely a gatekeeper. Having realised that, Caelum guessed that the real boss would show up sooner or later.

"I'll have to close the gate before it comes out then. Get out of my way!"

The white energy tendril was wrapped around his entire body again, protecting him from most attacks. Every now and then, a suicidal monster would use its allies to jump only to fall on top of him. It was a terrifying sight to which Caelum would respond by swatting it away like a fly with his black wing.

In the process, several other monsters would die as the lump of chaos slammed onto them. He kept moving around, trying to look for a way to break through the encirclement and kill the leader, however, the number of monsters attacking him seemed to only be increasing.

He no longer had the leisure to look around the rest of the park as the monsters seemed to be coming from all directions now. At this rate, more casualties will pile up, and he didn't want the burden of guilt weighing down on him.

"I said... MOVE!"

The black wing curled around him like a fluid creating another layer on top of the white wing, then a multitude of long black blades sprouted from it, skewering the monsters. Caelum, whose arms were now crossed over his chest, swung his right arm outward as he ran forward.

The black wing made of blades swirled around him twice, appearing like a black whirlwind cutting through the wave of monsters. He finally escaped the encirclement by tearing most of the monsters around him apart. Only a few dozen were left, but he could not pay them any more mind.

"It's your turn, you alien bastard!"

"Gul daka ramu ilran. Gakakaka!"

Caelum rushed forward, ignoring the stragglers that survived his full-powered attack. The leader's laughter came with the indubitable meaning of the alien words it spoke. A large hand squeezed through the gate and tore it open. From beyond the dripping blood, he could see a huge head trying to push its way through.

'Damn it! This is what I was afraid of!'

The large monster that was about to appear seemed incredibly strong for the current Caelum. He had not yet fully acclimated to Earth's changed atmosphere, and his powers had just been awoken for the first time. He was certain that he would not be able to defeat that monster if it came out.

'The only option is to kill it before it fully comes out!'

For some time now, the monsters within the park seemed to have lessened. Even those that survived Caelum's attack that had expended most of his energy no longer seemed to be running after him. He was curious, but time was of the essence. Although he had an idea of what might be happening, he decided to just confirm it after finishing his job. He was just thankful that he could finally run unhindered toward his target.

The problem was that the boss monster was too quick in passing through the gate. Perhaps it sensed what Caelum planned to do as nearly half its body was already out. Caelum was just a few feet away from the boss monster who was dragging its body out of the gate while also getting ready to grab and crush him with its large hand.

"This is a damn waste of energy, but fuck it!"

He clenched his right fist and swung it down hard. The black wing solidified once again and mimicked the motion, slamming down on the ground with terrifying strength and sending Caelum flying forward at a height that the boss monster's arms could not reach.

It was a dangerous manoeuvre, but it allowed Caelum a glimpse of freedom as he cut through the air with swiftness. His trajectory was clear from the start as the gatekeeper stared at the black mass falling directly on top of it in surprise.

"Urduk-"

"Shut the hell up!"

The gatekeeper was only able to utter a single word before it was squished to death. Caelum landed on his black wing, but the impact still hurt him as he coughed out a bit of blood. However, his plan worked wonderfully.

The gate closed along with the scream of the large monster. It was cut neatly from the waist below and was rolling on the ground in pain. The sight of a monster almost twice his size even without its lower body rolling on the ground in pain was hilarious. Or at least, Caelum thought so.

"Alright, big guy. Since you made me use too much, let me take yours."

The black wing, which had returned to being a formless chaotic energy after his landing, disappeared as though sucked into his back. And the white wing made of glowing colourless energy grew longer.

Caelum raised his left arm up high and the colourless tendrils of energy seemed to beautifully coil around each other until they formed a single lance of pure energy. And like a judge sentencing a criminal to death, his hand fell forward aiming at the large monster.

The lance bent and shot forward at incredible speed, piercing through the monster's chest before soon erupting into more spikes that bore holes into other parts of the monster's body. Soon, the monster stopped moving, its lifeforce drained. The lance retracted as soon as the job was done and disappeared into Caelum's back. The fight was now over.

"This life shall wet the soil from whence the Imaginary Tree grows."

After a short prayer, Caelum turned around. Now that the boss was dead and the gate was closed, it was time to finish off the remaining monsters. However, he was met with a crowd of people outfitted with armors and all kinds of weapons.

They were staring at him curiously and warily. Caelum immediately knew that they had already taken care of the rest of the monsters and even helped him out with the few that were chasing after him. As such, he only had one thing to do.

"Thank you for helping me earlier. It would've been a lot more troublesome if those things kept blocking the way."

He waited for a while to hear their response, but nothing came.
