You were a scarlet rose, redder than blood,
redder than flame, spoiled by heaven in wood,
spoiled by spring rain dropped like dewdrop on lawn,
spoiled by fountain watered petal in dawn.
You were a butterfly, paler than snow,
paler than cloud, fluttered over meadow,
where roses blossomed like blossom of flame,
where roses by else name were sweet as same.
You were a nightingale, darker than dark,
darker than ink, sang on branch in dark bark,
sang in still park with chirps came with blade frog,
sang till daylight lit darkness, unmasked fog.
You were an angel passed through dream of mine,
and warmed whole spring, warmer than spring sunshine.
