One day both birds fluttered like butterfly,
then flew through grove toward separate sky,
whose wings fluttered with wind in the daylight,
whose eyes watched setting sun in the twilight.
One day both birds raced in blue side of sky,
then fluttered down chestnut tree branch with sigh,
whose wings flew side by side like planes in flight,
whose feathers warmed like fire as birds hugged tight.
One day both birds waved each other goodbye,
then made separate nest beneath blue sky,
perhaps both birds thought each other in night,
perhaps both birds returned grove in moonlight.
perhaps light sand wettened each other's eye,
perhaps wet eyes saw each other in sky.
