Alex blinked, caught off guard by Nancy's words. He frowned slightly, the disbelief evident in his voice. "You really thought I was a bad person?"
Nancy tilted her head, her expression calm but thoughtful. "I just assumed…" she began, pausing to choose her words carefully. "I thought you'd be so consumed by rage—so angry at the world and everyone in it—that it would turn into hatred."
Alex raised an eyebrow, her explanation intriguing him.
"And?"
She gave a small smile, shrugging.
"And now I see that's not the case."
Alex wasn't sure how to respond, so he settled on the simplest reply.
"Thanks, I guess?"
For a moment, silence settled between them as they walked.
