Chereads / The lost Heir / Chapter 8 - Chapter 8

Chapter 8 - Chapter 8

Jack Smith was getting out of his office when his phone rang off over and over. He was trying to rush out of the office to get home to his pregnant wife but the way the phone was buzzing with calls, he knew he had to take it.

He pulled out his phone and saw Pete's name on his screen.

"I hope it is a lead to the Kevin case," he murmured and took the call.

"Hello Pete. What have you got for me?"

"I told you someone was on our trail. Now, I am not guessing, I am certain."

Jack felt a pang in his chest. What was he about to say.

"What happened?" He asked with curiosity cutting through him.

"I got to the first home that took Kevin, the woman who Elizabeth handed the missing Son to and I found two men leaving. I didn't want to risk being seen by them and after they left I went in and found the woman dead."

"What?" Jack was dumbstruck. "Who do you think these men work for?"

"I have their pictures on my camera but I cannot find nor trace them to anyone."

At this point, Jack was becoming convince that Kevin was truly the heir that Charles Montgomery had. He didn't need to look any further.

"You know what Pete, I think I have the answer I need. There's one more step to prove that I am right and since this investigation is proving dangerous, let us let that lie. We will revisit it later."

"Alright then."

Once he hung up the call, he twitched the corners of his lips and chewed on them.

"Kevin is truly Charles's son," he muttered and got into his car. What was left was to do the one thing that could end the doubts he had.

"Surprised to see us, I guess," Maya's voice shot through his veins.

"What are you doing here?" Kevin raged, gripping his sheets tightly.

"What else? I came to pay you a visit. We all saw how you ran into a moving car and slid right under."

"Such a pitiable sight," Liam scorned and the two of them laughed.

Kevin felt like strangling them but he was to frail to do that.

"Who even let you in here Maya ? You made it clear already that you are done with me. What do you want from me?"

"Shut up! I heard from some sources that you have become paralysed and I was so intrigued by the thoughts of it." Her voice was filled with bitterness and and mockery.

"So, you came to mock me?" Kevin asked with sorrow in his eyes.

"Exactly! Why else do you think I would come over?"

Liam pulled out his phone and took pictures of Kevin as he was lying helpless on the bed and said, "aww… look at how helpless he looks. He cannot even reach out to me."

"I feel bad that he cannot even move a finger."

"He deserved to be confined to this bed and maybe only elevated to a wheel chair," Liam added and they both burst into laughter.

"This is so wicked of you to do, Maya. I never did anything to you. I was kind to you."

"Your kindness to her almost cost me my relationship with my baby but now, with you paralysed, I am certain I cannot have a competition."

"No babe, this piece of shit could never have been a competition for you. Even when he had those legs."

Liam and Maya scorned him till they got tired and then, they turned around and walked away, leaving Kevin devastated and reminded of his loneliness in the world.

"When will this be over?" Kevin muttered to himself, sobbing so loudly.

He sobbed till he lulled himself to sleep.

Daylight streamed into the windows and it got brighter and brighter.

Eden was pulling the curtains apart and setting some flowers she had gotten for him and food she made for him.

"You're here already." Kevin's voice startled her.

"I had no idea you were awake."

She was smiling warmly at him and sat beside him. "I brought you casseroles."

"You don't have to go through all that stress. You do too much already."

Eden rolled her eyes at him, "maybe it would interest you to know that I didn't even cook this. My mum did."

"But she was ill, you didn't have to stress her."

Kevin looked stunned.

"No, I didn't do this. I woke up to find her in the kitchen making this."

While their were talking, Doctor Taylor and Jack Smith walked into the room.

Seeing Jack made Kevin feel slightly elated. It felt like something good was going to come out of it.

"Hello Kevin," Jack called out to him with a smile.

"You are here?"

"Yes. Doctor Taylor told me the results proved that you don't have a spinal injury and you are due for discharge."

"Oh, that is good news," he mumbled, letting out a sigh of relief.

"I am happy to hear that too," Eden added.

"So, when is he getting discharged? I could take him home with me," Eden giggled with excitement.

Jack and Taylor exchanged glances.

"He won't be going with you sweetheart," Taylor said. "Jack will be taking him home to his real family."

Eden was confused.
